        Optical Absorption Properties of Dielectric Composite Films Doped with Metal Nanoparticles

        Composite thin films formed by using nanometer-sized metal particles embedded in dielectric matrices were fabricated by using a pulsed laser deposition technique to co-deposit the metal and the ceramic targets. The optical absorption properties were measured at wavelength from 350 to 800 nm, and the absorption peak due to the surface plasmon resonance of the metal particles was found. The effects of different metal particles (Au, Ag, Fe, Co) and different embedding matrices (SrTiO3, Al2O3, and TiO2) on the optical absorption properties of dielectric composite films are discussed. Strong absorption peaks can be found in composite films doped with noble-metal particles while the composites doped with most transition-metal particles show ordinary absorption patterns. The dielectric properties of the metal particles and the refractive indices of the embedding matrices were responsible for the observed results.

        Effect of Wall Structures on Mechanical Properties of Small Caliber PHBHHx Vascular Grafts

        In order to analyze the effect of vascular wall structures on static and dynamic mechanical properties of vasculargrafts, small calibre PHBHHx (Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxhexanoate)) vascular grafts (inner diameter 6 mm) withvarious wall shapes and thicknesses were fabricated by changing electrospinning time and receiving molds. As spinning timeincreased, wall thickness of the vascular grafts increased and both circumferential tensile strength and suture retentionstrength improved significantly. When the wall thicknesses of straight grafts were about 120 μm, the great radial dynamiccompliance was exhibited, however, the tensile strength and suture retention strength of the straight tubes can’t reach therequirements of normal blood vessel grafting. With the wall thicknesses increasing above 250 μm, although thecircumferential tensile strength and suture retention strength gradually achieved the transplanting requirements, the dynamiccompliance of the straight tubes declined too sharply to adapt the blood radial shock. For corrugated grafts, the effect of wallthickness on radial dynamic compliance was little, and the radial dynamic compliance was close to that of the commercialvascular grafts. The circumferential tensile strength and suture retention strength of the corrugated grafts were also improvedto approach the commercial vessels’ performances with the wall thickness improving to about 425 μm. Elastic recovery ratesof all the prepared vascular grafts were superior to that of the commercial sample. Along with the wall thickness exceeding250 μm, the water permeabilities of both the straight and the corrugated grafts were less than 300 ml/(cm2·min).

        Comparison of leaf transcriptomes of cassava “Xinxuan 048” diploid and autotetraploid plants

        Polyploidy breeding of cassava has been used to improve cassava traits over the past years. We previously reported in vitro induction of tetraploids in the cassava variety “Xinxuan 048” using colchicine. Significant differences in morphology and anatomy were found between the diploid and tetraploid plants. However, very little is known about the transcriptome difference between them. In this study, morphological and physiological characteristics including leaf thickness, plant height, internode length, chlorophyll content, and photosynthetic capacity were measured. Further, we investigated and validated the difference in gene expression patterns between cassava “Xinxuan 048” tetraploid genotype and its diploid plants using RNA sequencing (RNAseq) and quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Significant differences in morphology and physiology were observed during tetraploidization. A comparison revealed that tetraploidy induced very limited changes in the leaf transcriptomes of cassava “Xinxuan 048” diploid and autotetraploid plants. However, the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between 2× and 4× plants, especially those upregulated in 4× plants, were strongly associated with hormonal and stress responses. Large changes in morphology and physiology between the diploid cassava “Xinxuan 048” and its autotetraploid were not associated with large changes in their leaf transcriptomes. Moreover, the differently expressed genes related to the regulation of gibberellin and brassinosteroids potentially explained why the plant height and internode length of 4× plants became shorter. Collectively, our results suggest that 4× cassava is potentially valuable for breeding strains with improved stress resistance.
