2,6-Bis((4-hexylphenyl)ethynyl)-9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene, 4, and 9,10-bis((4-hexylphenyl)ethynyl)-2,6-bis (phenyl ethynyl)anthracene, 5, have been synthesized to study their electronic and photophysical properties. It should be noted that the difference between these compounds is the substitution position of 1-ethynyl-4-hexylbenzene groups into an anthracene ring. In particular, substitution in the 9,10-positions of the anthracene ring enhanced J-aggregated intermolecular interactions. Since 5 has a lower bandgap energy and more compact film morphology, it exhibited higher hole mobility (∼0.27 cm2 V−1 s−1) in thin-film transistor devices.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

Background: The clinicopathological significance of oncofetal mRNA-binding protein, human insulin-like growth factor II mRNA-binding protein 3 (IMP3), in gastric carcinoma (GC) is not fully understood. Materials and Methods: Tissue microarray blocks with specimens from 346 patients with GC were constructed to evaluate the clinicopathological role of IMP3 expression in GC. These results were validated with an online dataset of 876 patients from the Kaplan-Meier Plotter. Sera from 15 controls and 57 patients with GC were collected in order to compare the levels of serum IMP3 between groups. Results: High expression of IMP3 was significantly associated with poor prognosis. Survival curves from the Kaplan-Meier Plotter showed that high IMP3 expression was significantly related to worse disease-free survival and overall survival. Conclusion: Tissue overexpression of IMP3 might be used as a predictor of advanced disease or lymph node metastasis, and is associated with poorer prognosis in GCs.

Relevance of Light Spectra to Growth of the Rearing Tiger Puffer Takifugu rubripes

In fish, light (photoperiod, intensity and spectra) is main regulator in many physiological actions including growth. We investigate the effect of light spectra on the somatic growth and growth-related gene expression in the rearing tiger puffer. Fish was reared under different light spectra (blue, green and red) for 8 weeks. Fish body weight and total length were promoted when reared under green light condition than red light condition. Expression of somatostatins (ss1 and ss2) in brain were showed higher expression under red light condition than green light condition. The ss3 mRNA was observed only higher expression in blue light condition. Expression of growth hormone (gh) in pituitary was detected no different levels between experimental groups. However, the fish of green light condition group was showed more high weight gain and feed efficiency than other light condition groups. Our present results suggest that somatic growth of tiger puffer is induced under green light condition because of inhibiting ss mRNA expression in brain by effect of green wavelength.

CONCLUSION: It was demonstrated that isolation and application of a new methanotroph strain is a practical way of improving bioconversion efficiency in the conversion of methane to methanol. Moreover, one promising feature of Methylomonas sp. DH-1 for methanol production was its extremely high tolerance to methanol up to 7%(v/v), which is advantageous for high-titer methanol production. Expression of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase-1 in gastric cancer as a potential therapeutic target

In contrast to mitochondria in healthy cells, which utilize oxidative phosphorylation, malignant cells undergo elevated glycolysis for energy production using glucose. The objectives of this study were to evaluate whether the expression of various molecules, including pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase-1 (PDK-1), is involved in the altered glucose metabolism associated with gastric cancer prognosis and to assess the role of a therapeutic agent in targeting glucose metabolism in gastric cancer. Immunohistochemistry was performed on gastric cancer tissues obtained from 152 patients who underwent curative resection to assess the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), glucose transporter-1 (GLUT-1), hexokinase-2 (HK-2) and PDK-1. In an in vitro analysis, the lactate production and glucose uptake levels, cellular viability and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) responses were evaluated before and after treatment with dichloroacetate (DCA), a PDK-1 inhibitor, in the MKN45 and AGS gastric cancer cell lines and in the non-cancerous HEK293 cell line. GLUT-1 and PDK-1 expression was significantly associated with tumor progression, although only PDK-1 expression was an independent prognostic factor for patients who received 5-FU adjuvant treatment. There was no significant difference in cell viability between the HEK293 and gastric cancer cell lines following DCA treatment. However, DCA treatment reduced lactate production and increased responsiveness to 5-FU in MKN45 cells, which expressed high levels of PDK-1 in comparison to the other cell lines. Thus, PDK-1 may serve as a biomarker of poor prognosis in patients with gastric cancer. In addition, PDK-1 inhibitors such as DCA may be considered an additional treatment option for patients with PDK-1-expressing gastric cancers.
