Conversational implicature comprehension strategies used by English learners in Indonesia

Comprehension of conversational implicature is relatively easy for native speakers. However, the same degree of ease does not apply to second language learners. This study aims to uncover the strategies of second language learners despite the difficulties they face. Eighteen respondents are invited to join think-aloud protocols (TAP sessions). During the TAP sessions, respondents are instructed to answer thirty written questions assessing conversational implicature and, at the same time, asked to narrate their thoughts out loud during the session. The responses during these sessions are recorded and transcribed. The data is then codified and analyzed using receptive strategy categorization developed by Vandergrift (1997). The results of the analysis lead to clues on how second language learners, in general, strategize to understand conversational implicature. This study also reveals the difference between strategies used by learners with high implicature scores and those used by learners with low implicature scores.

The size-dependent nonlinear thermomechanical vibration analysis of pre- and post-buckled tapered two-directional functionally graded (2D-FG) microbeams is presented in this study. In the context of the modified couple stress theory, the formulations are derived based on the parabolic shear deformation beam theory and von Karman nonlinear strains. Different thermomechanical material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependent and smoothly vary in both length and thickness directions using the power law and the physical neutral axis concept is employed. The nonlinear governing equations are derived using the Hamilton principle and the resulting variable coefficient equations of motion are solved using the differential quadrature method (DQM) and iterative Newton’s method for clamped-clamped and simply supported boundary conditions. Comparison studies are presented to validate the derived model and solution procedure. The impacts of induced thermal moments, temperature power index, two gradient indices, nonuniform cross-section, and microstructure length scale parameter on the frequency-temperature configurations are explored for both clamped and simply supported microbeams.
Molecular dynamics simulations of oxide surfaces in water

We conducted constant volume molecular dynamics simulations of water conned by stainless steel slabs. We used polarizableshell model for both the oxide slabs and the water molecules, with non-Coulombic intermolecular forces modelled by Buckinghampotentials. Time-averaged trajectories clearly showed the presence of layering in the density of the water molecules perpendicular tothe slabs. There was also a corresponding ordering in orientation of the water molecules perpendicular to the slabs.
Company Characteristics, Disclosure of Social Responsibility, and Its Impact on Company Performance

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the obligations that the company must carry out. It follows Law no. 40 of 2007 concerning limited liability company article 74, which regulates the obligation to carry out social and environmental responsibility. CSR is needed so that stakeholders, including the community, know all forms of corporate responsibility to society and the environment. Company characteristics such as company size, company type, and leverage are factors why a company must disclose its CSR. CSR will gain the community’s trust so that it will have an impact on improving company performance. The purpose of this study is to obtain evidence and to draw conclusions on whether the factors of company size, leverage, and type of company affect CSR disclosure. The data in this study uses multiple regression analysis with secondary data and purposive sampling. The results suggest that type and leverage significantly affect CSR disclosure; the size variable does not affect CSR disclosure. The CSR variable does not affect return on assets (ROA). Company characteristics variables (type, leverage, and size) do not affect ROA. This research is expected to contribute both academically and practically to increasing the academic community’s expertise, competence, and knowledge.
FRACTIONAL CHEBYSHEV FINITE DIFFERENCE METHOD FOR SOLVING THE FRACTIONAL BVPS

In this paper, we introduce a new numerical technique which we call fractional Chebyshev finite difference method (FChFD). The algorithm is based on a combination of the useful properties of Chebyshev polynomials approximation and finite difference method. We tested this technique to solve numerically fractional BVPs. The proposed technique is based on using matrix operator expressions which applies to the differential terms. The operational matrix method is derived in our approach in order to approximate the fractional derivatives. This operational matrix method can be regarded as a non-uniform finite difference scheme. The error bound for the fractional derivatives is introduced. The fractional derivatives are presented in terms of Caputo sense. The application of the method to fractional BVPs leads to algebraic systems which can be solved by an appropriate method. Several numerical examples are provided to confirm the accuracy and the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Gold Nanoparticles Induce Apoptosis in MCF-7 Human Breast Cancer Cells

Background: Gold nanoparticles have recently been investigated with respect to biocompatibility according to their interactions with cells. The purpose of this study was to examine cytotoxicity and apoptosis induction by well-characterized gold nanoparticles in human breast epithelial MCF-7 cells. Methods: Apoptosis was assessed by TUNEL, cytotoxicity by MTT assay and caspase 3, 9, p53, Bax and Bcl expression by real-time PCR assays. Results: Gold nanoparticles at up to $200\;{\mu}g/mL$ for 24 hours exerted concentration-dependent cytotoxicity and significant upregulation of mRNA expression of p53, bax, caspase-3 & caspase-9, whereas expression of antiapoptotic bcl-2 was down-regulated. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge this is the first report showing that gold nanoparticles induce apoptosis in MCF-7cells via p53, bax/bcl-2 and caspase pathways.

Objectives: Recurrent caries was partly ascribed to lack of antibacterial properties in composite resin. Silver and zinc nanoparticles are considered to be broad-spectrum antibacterial agents. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antibacterial properties of composite resins containing 1% silver and zinc-oxide nanoparticles on Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus. Materials and Methods: Ninety discoid tablets containing 0%, 1% nano-silver and 1% nano zinc-oxide particles were prepared from flowable composite resin (n = 30). The antibacterial properties of composite resin discs were evaluated by direct contact test. Diluted solutions of Streptococcus mutans (PTCC 1683) and Lactobacillus (PTCC 1643) were prepared. 0.01 mL of each bacterial species was separately placed on the discs. The discs were transferred to liquid culture media and were incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ for 8 hr. 0.01 mL of each solution was cultured on blood agar and the colonies were counted. Data was analyzed with Kruskall-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: Composites containing nano zinc-oxide particles or silver nanoparticles exhibited higher antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus compared to the control group (p < 0.05). The effect of zinc-oxide on Streptococcus mutans was significantly higher than that of silver (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in the antibacterial activity against Lactobacillus between composites containing silver nanoparticles and those containing zinc-oxide nanoparticles. Conclusions: Composite resins containing silver or zinc-oxide nanoparticles exhibited antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus.
Memory response in elasto-thermoelectric spherical cavity

A mathematical model of electro-thermoelasticity subjected to memory-dependent derivative (MDD) heat conduction law is applied to a one-dimensional problem of a thermoelectric spherical cavity exposed to a warm stun that is an element of time in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. Utilizing Laplace transform as an instrument, the issue has been fathomed logically within the changed space. Numerical inversion of the Laplace transform is carried for the considered distributions and represented graphically. Some comparisons are shown in the figures to estimate the effects of MDD parameters and thermoelectric properties on the behavior of all considered fields.

We present an optical {\it UBVRI} photometric analysis of the poorly studied open star cluster IC 2156 using Sloan Digital Sky Survey data in order to estimate its astrophysical properties. We compare these with results from our previous studies that relied on the 2MASS JHK near-infrared photometry. The stellar density distributions and color-magnitude diagrams of the cluster are used to determine its geometrical structure, real radius, core and tidal radii, and its distance from the Sun, the Galactic plane, and the Galactic center. We also estimate, the age, color excesses, reddening-free distance modulus, membership, total mass, luminosity function, mass function, and relaxation time of the cluster.
