Edge states at an intersection of edges of a topological material
Hashimoto, Koji,Wu, Xi,Kimura, Taro American Physical Society 2017 Physical Review B Vol.95 No.16
<P>We study an exotic state which is localized only at an intersection of edges of a topological material. This 'edge-of-edge' state is shown to exist generically. We construct explicitly generic edge-of-edge states in five-dimensional Weyl semimetals and their dimensional reductions, such as four-dimensional topological insulators of class A and three-dimensional chiral topological insulators of class AIII. The existence of the edge-of-edge state is due to a topological charge of the edge states. The notion of the Berry connection is generalized to include the space of all possible boundary conditions, where Chern-Simons forms are shown to be nontrivial.</P>
Japanese Women in a Ubiquitous Society
Hashimoto, Hiroko Asian pacific women's information network center 2005 APWIN Vol.7 No.-
The paper examines the status of Japanese women in a ubiquitous society is examined from both a positive side and a negative side. Current status of women and ICT such as weak women presence in Japanese government, non-existence of gender-sensitive policies and digital divide amongst older generations of women are narrated in the paper. Imbalance in gender ratio between Japanese women working in IT companies compare men is also analyzed. Also cases of cyber crimes against Japanese girls are also presented. The paper will further elaborate seriousness of the crimes, by introducing the real crime cases. The paper also attempts to shed lights on the positive side of Japanese women in a ubiquitous society such as increase in the number of women-owned e-businesses. The author also looks into gender differences in purposes in starting the e-business and the level of satisfaction.

A marine engine system (MES) should be evaluated by not only reliability (R) but also maintainability (M) and manning index (MI), because this system can be recognised as a typical man-machine system. In 1977 at the first ICMES Conference in Paris one of the authors presented a total evaluation of the MES with the three indices, R, M, MI, proving the human ability of detecting faults and defects in this system. This paper describes how the MES has developed from the point of view of the above three indices during the past 30 years in Japan and its problems in the future, and arrives at the following conclusions : the reliability of the MES has developed due to quality control (QC) ; the maintainability of the MES has improved due to education and training ; the manning index of the MES has improved due to Rand M ; the availability of the MES has kept constant due to the decreasing complement onboard, at the rate of one person per year approximately ; and two esimations having the three indices were shown by the SRIC 1990 Data Base in Japan, for the two kinds of subsystems in the developed MES.

The 21-GHz band, which has a 600-MHz 2007. However, since rain attenuation broadcasting from much larger than that in the 12-GHz band, powerful countermeasures to improve service availability are ardently desired. Consequently, we are studying broadcasting systems equipped with storage devices to overcome the effects of such heavy rain attenuation in the 21-GHz band. We compare the performances of two systems, i.e., the time diversity scheme and the so-called "long block length interleave transmission scheme" we show suitable applications for the two systems. Finally, we describe a prototype apparatus that was designed and fabricated to verify effectiveness of the long block-length interleave scheme. In the apparatus, we used HDDs (hard disk drives) as storage devices. Since HDDs are not suitable for random access, such as interleaving we inverted "a double-stage interleave method". The successful demonstration of the apparatus using the method is reported.

<P>Bidipyrrin-bridged macrocycles, prepared from Ni(II)-bridged dipyrrin-based nanorings by intramolecular oxidative biaryl coupling reactions, yielded [2+4]-type Zn(II)-assisted stable twisted-ring dimers comprising two double helices. These [2+4]-type metal complexes can be optically resolved by chiral HPLC and exhibit tunable electronic and optical properties as a result of spring-like motions. The double helices behave as glue to connect two macrocycles and as the screws of hinges to form thermally responsive synchronized spring systems.</P>

In this study, we investigate the discontinuous-derivative treatment at the gas-liquid interface in underwater explosion (UNDEX) problems by using the Moving Least Squares-Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (MLS-SPH) method, which is known as one of the particle methods suitable for problems where large deformation and inhomogeneity occur in the whole domain. Because the numerical oscillation of pressure arises from derivative discontinuity in the UNDEX analysis using the standard SPH method, the MLS shape function with Discontinuous-derivative Basis Function (DBF) that is able to represent the derivative discontinuity of field function is utilized in the MLS-SPH formulation in order to suppress the nonphysical pressure oscillation. The effectiveness of the MLS-SPH with DBF is demonstrated in comparison with the standard SPH and conventional MLS-SPH though a shock tube problem and benchmark standard problems of UNDEX of a trinitrotoluene (TNT) charge.
