<P>We found that beta-lapachone (beta-lap), a novel bioreductive drug, caused rapid apoptosis and clonogenic cell death in A549 human lung epithelial cancer cells in vitro in a dose-dependent manner. The clonogenic cell death caused by beta-lap could be significantly inhibited by dicoumarol, an inhibitor of NAD(P)H:quinone oxido-reductase (NQO1), and also by siRNA for NQO1, demonstrating that NQO1-induced bioreduction of beta-lap is an essential step in beta-lap-induced cell death. Irradiation of A549 cells with 4 Gy caused a long-lasting upregulation of NQO1, thereby increasing NQO1-mediated beta-lap-induced cell deaths. Although the direct cause of beta-lap-induced apoptosis is not yet clear, beta-lap treatment reduced the expression of p53 and NF-kappaB, whereas it increased cytochrome C release, caspase-3 activity, and gammaH2AX foci formation. Importantly, beta-lap treatment immediately after irradiation enhanced radiation-induced cell death, indicating that beta-lap sensitizes cancer cells to radiation, in addition to directly killing some of the cells. The growth of A549 tumors induced in immunocompromised mice could be markedly suppressed by local radiation therapy when followed by beta-lap treatment. This is the first study to demonstrate that combined radiotherapy and beta-lap treatment can have a significant effect on human tumor xenografts.</P>

The utility interactive sinewave modulated inverter for the solar photovoltaic (PV) power conversion and conditioning with a new high frequency pulse modulated link is presented for domestic residential applications. As compared with the conventional full-bridge hard switching PWM inverter with a high frequency AC link, the simplest single-ended quasi-resonant soft switching sinewave modulated inverter with a duty cycle pulse control is implemented, resulting in size and weight reduction and low-cost. This paper presents a prototype circuit of the single-ended zero voltage soft switching sinewave inverter for solar power conditioner and its operating principle. In addition, this paper proposes a control system to deliver high quality output current. Major design of each component and the power loss analysis under actual power processing is also discussed from an experimental point of view. A newly developed interactive sinewave power processor which has 92.5% efficiency at 4kW output is demonstrated. The grid voltage of commercial utility power source in Japan and USA is l00rms, but in China and European countries, it is 200rms. In recent years, in Japan 2G0Vrms out putted single phase three wire system begins to be used for high power applications. In l00Vrms utility AC power applications and systems, an active voltage clamped quasi-resonant inverter circuit topology using IGBTs has been effectively used so far for the consumer microwave oven. In this paper, presented is a half bridge type voltage-clamped high-frequency inverter type AC-DC converter using which is designed for consumer magnetron drive used as the consumer microwave oven in 200V utility AC power system. This zero voltage soft switching inverter can use the same power rated switching semiconductor devices and three-winding high frequency transformer as those of the active voltage clamped quasi-resonant inverter using the IGBTs that has already been used for 100V utility AC power source. The operating performances of the voltage source single ended push pull type inverter are evaluated and discussed for consumer microwave oven. The harmonic line current components in the utility AC power side of the AC-DC power converter operating at ZVS-PWM strategy reduced and improved on the basis of sine wave like pulse frequency modulation and sine wave like pulse width modulation for the utility AC voltage source.<br/> Index Terms; Zero Voltage Soft Switching Inverter, High Voltage Transformer, Voltage Doubter, Non smoothing LC Filter, New Pulse Pattern Modulation.<br/>

This paper presents a simple and cost effective circuit topology of single-ended type high frequency quasi-resonant PWM inverter using IGBTs, which can operate under wide soft switching operation range based on ZCS for main power switch as compared with a conventional active voltage-clamped ZVS-PWM high frequency quasi-resonant inverter developed previously In principle, this new circuit topology can efficiently operate under a constant frequency PWM control-based power regulation scheme In particular, it is noted that the zero current soft switching (ZCS) commutation can achieve for the main active power switch On the other hand, the zero voltage soft switching (ZVS) commutation can also achieve for the auxiliary active power switch The operating principle of this high-frequency Inverter treated here and its power regulation characteristics are illustrated on the basis of the simulation and feasible experimental results.
