      • 이수정의 신앙고백문: 유교적 배경과 요한복음 14-15장

        Although there are few domestic data on Lee Soo-jeong's life, it can be seen from the circumstances in which he was active in Japan that Lee Soo-jeong was a person with considerable knowledge as a Confucian scholar. Therefore, Lee Soo-jeong looked at Christianity based on Confucianism's "Cheoninmugan" and furthermore, "Cheonamugan," and confessed Jesus' teachings to the truth through Chapters 14-15 of John. The idea of Cheoninmugan is also located in the emotions of Koreans today. What can be considered first through Lee Soo-jeong's Confessionl Essay is that Christianity can be meaningful to people of other religions or ideas. Of course, God, spoken by the Confucian heavenly thought and Bible, is a completely different being. The Confucian sky appears to be a transcendent being, such as the laws of the universe or the logic of nature, sometimes as the ancient Sangje, but it is difficult to find the appearance of Christian God like the creator. However, it can be seen that it is in a structurally similar context. Through Lee Soo-jeong's Confessionl Essay, it can be confirmed that the message of the Bible is not completely different from other religions or ideas. Rather, it is very important in many ways to find meanings corresponding to Christianity in our history and religion. Therefore, it can be shown that Christianity is not an exclusive religion, but can encompass the teachings of all religions and ideas. Furthermore, Christianity today will be able to move forward as a religion of life that can give good influence to non-Christians while essentially retaining the gospel of "cross and resurrection." 이수정의 삶에 대한 국내의 자료들은 거의 없지만 일본에서 활동한 상황들을 통해서 이수정이 상당한 유학자로서의 소양을 가진 사람이었음을 알 수 있다. 그러므로 이수정은 유교의 ‘천인무간’ 그리고 더 나아가 ‘천아무간’ 사상을 바탕으로 기독교를 바라보았고, 요한복음 14-15장을 통해서 예수님의 가르침을 진리로 고백하게 되었다. 이러한 ‘천인무간’ 사상은 오늘날 한국인들의 정서에도 자리잡고 있다. 이수정의 신앙고백문을 통해서 먼저 생각해 볼 수 있는 것은 기독교가 다른 종교나 사상을 가진 사람들에게도 의미있게 다가갈 수 있다는 것이다. 물론 유교의 천(天) 사상과 성경이 말하는 하나님은 엄연히 다른 존재이다.

      • Different prognostic effect of CpG island methylation according to sex in colorectal cancer patients treated with adjuvant FOLFOX

        <P><B>Background</B></P><P>Profound methylation of CpG islands constitutes a distinct molecular subtype of colorectal cancer (CRC). The frequencies of methylation in CRC vary according to clinico-pathological characteristics including sex. However, interaction between these characteristics and prognostic influence of methylation status has not been clearly defined. We have investigated the prognostic role of promoter methylation using eight CpG island methylator phenotype (CIMP) markers in 497 stage II or III CRC patients who underwent curative resection followed by adjuvant FOLFOX. Overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were compared between subgroups classified by methylation status, and interactions with clinico-pathological features were analyzed.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>CIMP-high (≥5 methylated loci) and concurrent methylation in <I>NEUROG1</I> and <I>CDKN2A (p16)</I> were found in 5.8 and 7.9 % of patients, respectively. Although CIMP-high status was not associated with survival, concurrent methylation in <I>NEUROG1</I> and <I>CDKN2A (p16)</I> was associated with shorter OS and DFS. Moreover, the prognostic role of the concurrent methylation was different among sex. The negative prognostic impact was only observed in male but not in female (interaction <I>p</I> value = 0.026 for OS and 0.011 for DFS). In male, the 5-year OS was 61.6 % in concurrent methylation (+) and 91.7 % in concurrent methylation (−) (<I>p</I> < 0.001) whereas it was 95.0 and 92.8 % in female, respectively (<I>p</I> = 0.78).</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Concurrent methylation in <I>NEUROG1</I> and <I>CDKN2A</I> is associated with poor survival in CRC treated with adjuvant FOLFOX. Interaction analysis indicates that the prognostic role is different according to sex.</P>

        A pathogenic role for ER stress-induced autophagy and ER chaperone GRP78/BiP in T lymphocyte systemic lupus erythematosus

        <P>ER stress induced autophagy and decreased GRP78 expression of T lymphocytes are involved in the pathogenesis of SLE and potentially important therapeutic targets.</P><P>Abnormal regulation of ER stress and apoptosis has been implicated in autoimmune disorders. Particularly, ER stress-induced autophagy and the role of GRP78, or BiP in T lymphocyte survival and death in SLE are poorly understood. This study investigated the pathogenic roles of ER stress-induced autophagy and GRP78/BiP in apoptosis of T lymphocytes. We compared spontaneous and induced autophagy and apoptosis of T lymphocytes in healthy donors and patients with SLE. The molecular mechanism of altered autophagy and apoptosis was investigated in T lymphocytes transfected with siRNA for beclin 1 and CHOP and T lymphocytes overexpressing GRP78. Decreased autophagy and increased apoptosis in response to TG-induced ER stress were observed in lupus T lymphocytes. GRP78 and ER stress-signaling molecules, such as PERK, p-eIF2<I>α</I>, IRE1, and ATF6 decreased, whereas CHOP levels increased in lupus T cells in response to TG. The levels antiapoptotic molecules, Bcl-2 and Bcl-X<SUB>L</SUB> decreased, whereas the proapoptotic molecules, Bax and caspase 6, increased in lupus T cells. The TG-induced ER stress altered autophagy and apoptosis, which in turn, led to abnormal T cell homeostasis with increased apoptotic T cell death. We hypothesize that aberrant autophagy of T lymphocytes as a result of ER stress and decreased GRP78 expression is involved in the pathogenesis of SLE and might serve as important therapeutic targets.</P>

      • Benefits of hypomethylating therapy in IPSS lower-risk myelodysplastic syndrome patients: A retrospective multicenter case series study

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We retrospectively analyzed the results of hypomethylating therapy in 586 patients (azacitidine in 423 and decitabine in 163) with International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS) lower-risk myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). The patients were reclassified with newer scoring systems (revised IPSS [R-IPSS], revised WHO classification-based Prognostic Scoring System [R-WPSS], and Lower Risk Prognostic Scoring System [LR-PSS]), and 21.8–38.4% of patients had high or very high risk features by the newer scoring systems. Median overall survival (OS) was 27.3 months and newer scoring systems well stratified the patients in terms of OS (R-IPSS, <I>P</I> =0.001; R-WPSS, <I>P<</I> 0.001; LR-PSS, <I>P<I> <</I> </I> 0.001). Hematologic improvement (HI) was observed in 279 patients (47.6%). OS differed by the achievement of HI (39.4% vs. 36.2%, <I>P</I> =0.067). The differences were significant only in patients of intermediate or high risk group by LR-PSS (<I>P</I> =0.034) or R-IPSS (<I>P</I> =0.018). In summary, IPSS lower-risk MDS included a broad range of prognosis, and hypomethylating therapy induced HI in approximately half of the patients. Achievement of HI was associated with longer survival, especially in patients with intermediate or high risk features by newer scoring systems.       • Growth of carbon nanotubes by microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition at low temperature

        Carbon nanotubes have been grown on Ni-coated Si substrates by microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition with a mixture of methane and hydrogen gases at temperatures ranging from 520 to 700℃. The density and the length of carbon nanotubes increased with increasing growth temperature. At growth temperature of 520℃, carbon nanotubes were curly, whereas the nanotubes were straight and self-aligned upward at temperatures above 600℃. Images of high-resolution transmission electron microscope showed that nanotubes were multiwalled with a few wall-structures. The graphitized structures were also confirmed by Raman spectra. We show that the size of Ni domains on Si substrates is correlated to the diameters of the grown carbon nanotubes.

        Breeding of Spray Rose Cultivar ‘ Pink Shine ’ with Pink Color and Longer Vase Life

        농촌진흥청 국립원예특작과학원에서는 2017년에 절화 수명이 길고 수량이 많은 연한 핑크색의 스프레이 장미 ‘Pink Shine’ 을 육성하였다. 모본은 ‘Fire Flash’로 붉은 복색의 스프레이 장미이며, 부본은 ‘Pink Charm’으로 핑크색이며 흰가루병에 강하다. 이 두 품종을 2012년 인공교배하여 이듬해인 2013년 1월에 파종, 9cm 포트 묘에 정식하여 관능 평가 실시 후 도태시켜 39개체 의 실생을 얻었다. 이후 화형, 화색, 꽃잎 수, 절화수량, 병 저항성 등을 고려하여 2015년까지 5개체를 선발하여 유사 품종인 ‘Missha’를 대조로 하여 2017년까지 3차에 걸친 특성 검정을 실시하였다. 그 결과 가장 우수한 ‘원교 D1-325’를 최종선발하여 ‘Pink Shine’으로 명명 후 2018년 3월 22일 품종보호출원(제 2018-212호)하여 2019년 6월 21일에 품종보호권(제7786호)이 등록되었다. 화색은 연한 핑크색(RHS, R36D)이며 잎의 색은 녹색(RHS, G137A)으로 대조 품종 ‘Missha’와 동일하였다. 꽃잎 수는 67.8개, 화폭 5.4cm, 화고 3.2cm로 ‘Missha’보다 컸으며 평방미터당 연간 절화수량은 131본, 절화수명은 15.3일로 ‘Missha’ 보다 우수하였다. In 2017 ‘Pink Shine’, a light pink spray rose cultivar,’ was bred by the National Institute of Horticulture & Herbal Science for the purposes of higher yield and longer vase l ife. This cultivar was developed by crossing ‘Fire Flash’, a reddish bicolor spray, with ‘Pink Charm’, a pink-colored spray cultivar resistant to powdery mildew. The crossing was performed in 2012 in anticipation of the pink colored spray and strong growth characteristics. Seeds were sown in January 2013, and planted in 9 cm pots. After the sensory evaluation, 39 seedlings were selected for the first selection group. Considering the flower shape, color, the number of petals, yield, and disease resistance, five lines were selected until 2015. Eventually, the ‘Wonkyo D1-325’ line was selected, and named ‘Pink Shine’ in 2017 through the first, second, and third characteristic tests for the 3 years from 2015 to 2017. An application for plant variety protection was registered on June 21, 2019 (No. 7786). The flower color of ‘Pink Shine’ is light pink (RHS, R36D), and the leaf color is green (RHS, G137A). The number of petals, the width of the flower, and the height of the flower were 67.8 cm, 5.4 cm, and 3.2 cm, respectively, which were all higher than ‘Missha’. The annual yield of the cut flower of ‘Pink Shine’ was 131 stems/m2 per year, and the vase life was superior to ‘Missha’.

        Understanding Physicians’ and Nurses’ Adaption of National-Leading Patient Safety Culture Policy: A Qualitative Study in Tertiary and General Hospitals in Korea

        Background: In Korea, the safety culture is led by national policy. How the policy ensures a patient safety culture needs to be investigated. This study aimed to examine the way in which physicians and nurses regard, understand, or interpret the patient safety-related policy in the hospital setting. Methods: In this qualitative study, we conducted four focus group interviews (FGIs) with 25 physicians and nurses from tertiary and general hospitals in South Korea. FGIs data were analyzed using thematic analysis, which was conducted in an inductive and interpretative way. Results: Three themes were identified. The healthcare providers recognized its benefits in the forms of knowledge, information and training at least although the policy implemented by the law forcibly and temporarily. The second theme was about the interaction of the policy and the Korean context of healthcare, which makes a “turning point” in the safety culture. The final theme was about some strains and conflicts resulting from patient safety policy. Conclusion: To provide a patient safety culture, it is necessary to develop a plan to improve the voluntary participation of healthcare professionals and their commitment to safety. Hospitals should provide more resources and support for healthcare professionals.
