      • Dynamic testing and health monitoring of historic and modern civil structures in Italy

        Gattulli, Vincenzo,Lepidi, Marco,Potenza, Francesco Techno-Press 2016 Structural monitoring and maintenance Vol.3 No.1

The paper reports a wide overview of the scientific activities on Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) in Italy. They are classified on three different conceptual scales: national territory (macro); regional area (medium); single structure (small). In the latter case differences have been pointed out between permanent installation and short-term experimental campaigns. A particular focus has been dedicated to applications devoted to cultural heritage which have an important historic, strategic and economic value for Italy. Two specific cases, the first related to the permanent monitoring of an historical Basilica and the second regarding the dynamic testing of a modern structure, have been presented as a basis for a general discussion.

Nonlinear Tuned Mass Damper for self-excited oscillations

Gattulli, Vincenzo,Di Fabio, Franco,Luongo, Angelo Techno-Press 2004 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.7 No.4

The effects of a class of nonlinear Tuned Mass Dampers on the aeroelastic behavior of SDOF systems are investigated. Unlike classical linear TMDs, nonlinear constitutive laws of the internal damping acting between the primary oscillator and the TMD are considered, while the elastic properties are keept linear. The perturbative Multiple Scale Method is applied to derive a set of bifurcation equations in the amplitude and phase and a parametric analysis is performed to describe the postcritical scenario of the system. Both cubic- and van der Pol-type dampings are considered and the dependence of the limit-cycle amplitudes on the system parameters is studied. These new results, compared with the previously obtained bifurcation scenario of a SDOF aeroelastic oscillator equipped with a linear TMD, show a detrimental effect on the maximum limit-cycle amplitude reduction of the nonlinear TMD. However, the analyses evidence that in the parameter region away from the perfect tuning condition the nonlinear connection can be used to tune the system with an enhancement of the limit-cycle amplitude reduction.

      • Dynamical models of a suspension bridge driven by vibration data

        Vincenzo Gattulli,Alvaro Cunha,Elsa Caetano,Francesco Potenza,Andrea Arena,Umberto Di Sabatino 국제구조공학회 2021 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.27 No.2

The great availability of measurement systems permits to acquire quite easily data related to structural oscillations in operational conditions. This occurrence may permit to enhance our capability to data-driven computing using directly experimental data and pertinent constraints and conservation laws, such as compatibility and equilibrium, surely certain. In the paper, a methodology will be presented to furnish an analytical mechanical model of a suspension bridge in which the main parameters can be derived from vibration measurements. In this respect, Polymax and Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition identification procedures are used to determine a complete modal model which is used to evaluate an error function. Optimization algorithms are used to evaluate the function minima in the fundamental parameter space. The procedure will be validated by results coming from a sophisticated finite element model for which geometric measurements are included through a 3D point cloud geometrical model and a consequent Building Information model (BIM) constructed with images acquired by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The case study of the pedestrian cable suspension Polvorines bridge (100 meters of span) is considered to demonstrate the procedure, due the test campaign conducted on March 2020.

      • Robotized inspection and health monitoring in the Gran Sasso National Laboratory

        Rinaldi, Cecilia,Di Sabatino, Umberto,Potenza, Francesco,Gattulli, Vincenzo Techno-Press 2021 Structural monitoring and maintenance Vol.8 No.1

The Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) is the largest underground research center in the world devoted to neutrino and astroparticle physics. It is located in galleries below about 1400 meters of rock mass. In this environment, inspection and monitoring actions are challenging for the maintenance and the safety of the infrastructures and they require a combined use of different strategies. The paper address issues related to the structural safety of the whole environment by proposing solutions for inspection and monitoring of different areas and elements, such as the gallery vaults, the structures of the experimental prototypes, the plants and the machinery. A generic framework is discussed to evidence the features of each specific solution and the interaction between different systems. Tunnel structural healthy is the most difficult to evaluate because the vaults are coated by not removable panels which waterproof and insulate the environment. Therefore, specific solutions are proposed for the inspection and monitoring of the vaults which are visible only in the interspace realized from such cladding panels. In this respect, different methodologies based on the use of robotic systems are presented and discussed in order to implement a suitable inspection and monitoring program. The complementary requirements to perform a mechatronic survey are defined also as basis of ongoing activities currently performed in LNGS.
