        Tests and finite element analysis on the local buckling of 420 MPa steel equal angle columns under axial compression

        Local buckling can be ignored for hot-rolled ordinary strength steel equal angle compression members, because the width-to-thickness ratios of the leg don’t exceed the limit value. With the development of steel structures, Q420 high strength steel angles with the nominal yield strength of 420 MPa have begun to be widely used in China. Because of the high strength, the limit value of the width-to-thickness ratio becomes smaller than that of ordinary steel strength, which causes that the width-to-thickness ratios of some hot-rolled steel angle sections exceed the limit value. Consequently, local buckling must be considered for 420 MPa steel equal angles under axial compression. The existing research on the local buckling of high strength steel members under axial compression is briefly summarized, and it shows that there is lack of study on the local buckling of high strength steel equal angles under axial compression. Aiming at the local buckling of high strength steel angles, this paper conducts an axial compression experiment of 420MPa high strength steel equal angles, including 15 stub columns. The test results are compared with the corresponding design methods in ANSI/AISC 360-05 and Eurocode 3. Then a finite element model is developed to analyze the local buckling behavior of high strength steel equal angles under axial compression, and validated by the test results. Followingthe validation, a finite element parametric study is conducted to study the influences of a range of parameters, and the analysis results are compared with the design strengths by ANSI/AISC 360-05 and Eurocode 3.

        The Metabolizable Energy Value, Standardized Ileal Digestibility of Amino Acids in Soybean Meal, Soy Protein Concentrate and Fermented Soybean Meal, and the Application of These Products in Early-weaned Piglets

        Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the metabolizable energy (ME) value, standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) of soybean meal (SBM), soy protein concentrate (SPC) and fermented soybean meal (FSBM), and the application of these products in early-weaned piglets. In Exp. 1, four barrows with initial body weight (BW) of $14.2{\pm}1.4$ kg were used in a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design. The diet 1 contained corn as the only energy source. The other three diets replaced 25% of corn in diet 1 with one of the three soybean products, and the digestable energy (DE) and ME contents were determined by difference. In Exp. 2, four barrows (initial BW of $18.2{\pm}1.5$ kg) were fitted with ileal T-cannulas and allotted to a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design. Three cornstarch-based diets were formulated using each of the soybean products as the sole source of AA. A nitrogen-free diet was also formulated to measure endogenous losses of AA. In Exp. 3, ninety six piglets (initial BW of $5.6{\pm}0.9$ kg) weaned at $21{\pm}2$ d were blocked by weight and assigned to one of three treatments for a 21-d growth performance study. The control diet was based on corn and SBM, the two treatments' diets contained either 10% SPC or FSBM and were formulated to same SID lysine to ME ratio of 3.6 g/Mcal. The results showed that the ME content of SPC was greater than SBM (p<0.05). The SID of most AA in SPC was greater than the SID of AA in SBM (p<0.05). For the essential AA, the SID of histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine and threonine in FSBM were greater than in SBM (p<0.05). Even though they were fed same SID lysine to ME ratio of 3.6 g/Mcal diets, pigs fed SPC and FSBM diets had greater weight gain, G:F (p<0.05) and better fecal score (p<0.05) than pigs fed SBM diet. In conclusion, SPC showed a higher ME content and SID of AA than the SBM. SID of some essential AA in FSBM was higher than SBM and was similar with SPC. But the lower antigenic proteins and anti-nutritional factors content in SPC and FSBM may be the main factors affecting the performance of early-weaned piglets rather than the increased ME content and SID of AA.

        True Digestibility of Phosphorus in Different Resources of Feed Ingredients in Growing Pigs

        To determine the true digestible phosphorus (TDP) requirement of growing pigs, two experiments were designed with the experimental diets containing five true digestible P levels (0.16%, 0.20%, 0.23%, 0.26% and 0.39%) and the ratio of total calcium to true digestible P (TDP) kept at 2:1. In Experiment 1, five barrows (Duroc${\times}$Landrace${\times}$Yorkshire) with an average initial body weight of 27.9 kg were used in a $5{\times}5$ Latin-square design to evaluate the effect of different dietary P levels on the digestibility and output of P and nitrogen. In Experiment 2, sixty healthy growing pigs (Duroc${\times}$Landrace${\times}$Yorkshire) with an average body weight (BW) of 21.4 kg were assigned randomly to one of the five dietary treatments (12 pigs/diet), and were used to determine the true digestible phosphorus (TDP) requirement of growing pigs on the basis of growth performance and serum biochemical indices. The results indicated that the true digestibility of P increased (p<0.05) linearly with increasing dietary TDP level below 0.26%. The true P digestibility was highest (56.6%) when dietary TDP was 0.34%. Expressed as g/kg dry matter intake (DMI), fecal P output increased (p<0.05) linearly with increasing P input. On the basis of g/kg fecal dry matter (DM), fecal P output was lowest for Diet 4 and highest (p<0.05) for Diet 5. The apparent digestibility of crude protein (CP) did not differ (p>0.05) among the five diets, with the average nitrogen output of 12.14 g/d and nitrogen retention of 66% to 74% (p>0.05), which suggested that there was no interaction between dietary P and CP protein levels. During the 28-d experimental period of Experiment 2, the average daily gain (ADG) of pigs was affected by dietary TDP levels as described by Eq. (1): $y=-809,532x^4+788,079x^3-276,250x^2+42,114x-1,759$; ($R^2=0.99$; p<0.01; y = ADG, g/d; x = dietary TDP, %), F/G for pigs by Eq. (2): $y=3,651.1x^4-3,480.4x^3+1,183.8x^2-172.5x+10.9$ ($R^2=0.99$; p<0.01; y = F/G; x = dietary TDP, %), and Total P concentrations in serum by Eq. (3): $y=-3,311.7x^4+3,342.7x^3-1,224.6x^2+195.6x-8.7$ (R2 = 0.99; p<0.01; y = total serum P concentration and x = dietary TDP, %). The highest ADG (782 g/d), the lowest F/G (1.07) and the highest total serum P concentration (3.1 mmol/L) were obtained when dietary TDP level was 0.34%. Collectively, these results indicate that the optimal TDP requirement of growing pigs is 0.34% of the diet at a total Ca to TDP ratio of 2:1.

        육계의 성장 촉진을 위한 사료 첨가제로서의 희토(稀土)

        Lanthanum을 비롯한 17가지 특수 원소를 일컬어 희토(rare earth)라 한다. 본 연구에서는 육계사료에 희토의 첨가 효과를 알아보기 위하여 2회의 사양 시험을 실시하였다. 시험에 이용한 희토는 순도 99% 이상의 염화 희토 혼합물$(RECl_3)$로 $LaCl_3$ 36.52%, $LaCl_3$ 28.14%, $PrCl_3$ 11.24%, 그리고 기타 희토원소 24.11%로 구성된 흰색 분말 형태이었다. 희토 급여 사육기간은 5주간이었으며, 본 연구의 주요 목적은 희토 급여가 육계의 성장을 촉진할 수 있는지, 유해성은 없는지, 그리고 적정 사료 첨가 수준을 구명하였다. 육계의 복강 지방 축적에 대해서도 알아보았다. 첫 번째 사양 시험에서는 시판 배합 사료에 대한 희토 첨가 효과를 검토하였다. Cobb육계 1일령 병아리 360수를 사용하였으며, 사료에 희토를 0, 100, 200, 400, 800, 그리고 1,600 mg/kg 수준으로 첨가하였다. 육계의 성장은 희토 100 mg/kg 첨가 수준에서 가장 우수하였으며, 증체량은 대조구에 비해 8.9%가 증가하였고(1,669.9 vs. 1,533.8 g/chick), 사료 요구율도 낮았다(p<0.05). 희토는 1,600 mg/kg 수준으로 매우 높게 급여할지라도 성장이 저해되지 않았으며, 대조구와 같은 증체와 사료 요구율을 보였으므로, 과다 급여에 의한 중독증은 없을 것으로 사료되었다. 두 번째 사양 시험은 실험 1의 결과에서는 육계사료에서 성장능력의 극대화를 위한 희토의 적정 첨가 수준이 $100\sim200mg/kg$으로 예측되었으므로 좀더 근접한 적정 수준을 알아보고자 희토를 0, 50, 100, 150 mg/kg 수준으로 첨가하였다. 시험 사료는 시판 사료에 있을 수 있는 항생제나 기타 성장 촉진용 사료 첨가제를 첨가하기 위하여 자가 배합하였으며, Ross육계 1일령 병아리 360수를 이용하였다. 시험 결과 희토 50 mg/kg의 첨가가 증체량과 사료 요구율에서 대조구나 다른 처리구들에 비해 월등히 좋은 결과를 나타내었다(p<0.05). 이 시험에서는 첫 번째 시험에서 보이지 않았던, 생체중에 대한 복강 지방 비율이 현저하게 감소한 것으로 나타났다(p<0.05). 본 실험 결과 육계사료에 희토의 첨가는 육계의 성장을 촉진하였으며, 사료 요구율 개선하였다. 이외에도 복강지방이 낮아지는 경향을 보였지만 일관성이 없었으므로 추후의 연구가 필요하다. In order to study the effect of feeding rare earth(RE) on growth of broiler chicks, feed conversion ratio, and probable harmfulness of feeding high levels of RE, two feeding trials with broiler chicks were conducted; one using a commercial broiler compound feed and the other using a self mixed feed excluding any growth stimulating feed additives. The the first trial used three hundred sixty of one day old Cobb broiler chicks for six levels of dietary supplementation of RE : 0, 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1,600 mg/kg. There were significant effect of RE stimulating broiler chick growth and improving feed conversion ratio, The dietary supplementation of RE at a level of 100 mg/kg was the best of all and increased body weight gain by 8.9% (p<0.05). Chicks fed RE at a level of 1,600 mg/kg grew as good as chicks fed feeds without RE and did not show my abnormalities. The second feeding trial was conducted in the same manner as the first trial using Ross broiler chicks and self-mixed experimental diets supplemented with RE at levels of 0, 50, 100 and 150 mg/kg. Differently from Results of the first trial, body weight gain and feed conversion ratio of were the best at the level of 50 mg/kg RE supplementation(p<0.05). In this trial all the birds fed RE showed significantly lower ratio of abdominal fat against live weight than those of the control group birds. Overall, it can be said that dietary supplementation of RE will improve broiler growth and feed conversion ratio and the proper dietary level would be $50\sim100mg/kg$. These results suggested that the proper level of RE for broiler chicks would be 50 to 100 mg/kg and its effectiveness is varied depending upon RE mixture. There appears abdominal fat of broiler chicks is decreased by feeding RE but further investigation is in need.

        <P>Development of advanced high energy density lithium ion batteries is important for promoting electromobility. Making electric vehicles attractive and competitive compared to conventional automobiles depends on the availability of reliable, safe, high power, and highly energetic batteries whose components are abundant and cost effective. Nickel rich Li[NixCoyMn1−x−y]O2 layered cathode materials (<I>x</I> > 0.5) are of interest because they can provide very high specific capacity without pushing charging potentials to levels that oxidize the electrolyte solutions. However, these cathode materials suffer from stability problems. We discovered that doping these materials with tungsten (1 mol%) remarkably increases their stability due to a partial layered to cubic (rock salt) phase transition. We demonstrate herein highly stable Li ion battery prototypes consisting of tungsten-stabilized Ni rich cathode materials (<I>x</I> > 0.9) with specific capacities >220 mA h g<SUP>-1</SUP>. This development can increase the energy density of Li ion batteries more than 30% above the state of the art without compromising durability.</P>

        Effects of Single Cell Protein Replacing Fish Meal in Diet on Growth Performance, Nutrient Digestibility and Intestinal Morphology in Weaned Pigs

        Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the ME value, standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) of fish meal, and the effects of single cell protein (Prosin and Protide) replacing fish meal in diet on growth performance, nutrient digestibility and intestinal morphology in weaned piglets. In Exp. 1, twenty-four barrows with initial BW of $30.8{\times}2.6kg$ were allotted to one of four dietary treatments. Diet 1 contained corn as the only energy source. The other three diets replaced 20% of the corn in diet 1 with one of the three protein feeds (fish meal, Prosin and Protide), and the DE and ME contents were determined by difference. In Exp. 2, eight barrows (initial BW of $25.6{\pm}3.2kg$) were fitted with ileal T-cannulas and allotted to a replicated $4{\times}4$ Latin square design. Three cornstarch-based diets were formulated using each of the protein feeds as the sole source of AA. A nitrogen-free diet was also formulated to measure endogenous losses of AA. In Exp. 3, one hundred and eighty piglets (initial BW of $7.95{\pm}1.59kg$) weaned at $28{\times}2d$ were blocked by weight and assigned to one of five treatments for a 28-d growth performance study, each treatment was fed to six pens with six pigs (three barrows and three gilts) per pen. The five treatments consisted of the control group (CON), which was a corn-soybean meal diet containing 5% fish meal, and the other four treatments, which replaced a set amount of fish meal with either Prosin (2.5% or 5%) or Protide (2.5% or 5%). The diets were formulated to provide same nutrient levels. The results showed that on a DM basis, both of the DE and ME contents were lower in Prosin and Protide than that of fish meal (p<0.05). The SID of CP and all essential AA were greater in fish meal than in Prosin and Protide (p<0.05). The pigs fed CON diet had greater weight gain and lower feed conversion rate (FCR) than pigs fed 5% Prosin and 5% Protide diets (p<0.05). The digestibility of CP was greater in pigs fed CON, 2.5% Prosin and 2.5% Protide diets than the pigs fed 5% Prosin and 5% Protide diets (p<0.05). Villus height in jejunum and ileum, and villus height to crypt depth ratio in the jejunum were higher (p<0.05) in pigs fed CON, 2.5% Prosin and 2.5% Protide diets compared with the 5% Prosin and 5% Protide diets. Pigs fed CON diet had greater villus height to crypt depth ratio in the ileum than the pigs fed 5% Prosin and 5% Protide diets (p<0.05). In conclusion, although Prosin and Protide contained lower ME content and SID of AA than fish meal, Prosin and Protide replacing 50% of fish meal in diet with identical nutrient levels could obtain similar performance, nutrient digestibility and intestinal morphology in weaned pigs.

        Effect of Deformation Temperature on Crystal Texture Formation in Hot Deformed Nanocrystalline SmCo₅ Permanent Magnets

        In the present study, bulk anisotropic nanocrystalline SmCo₅ magnets were prepared by hot deformation. The effect of deformation temperature on the texture and magnetic properties are presented, based on which the mechanism of plastic deformation and texture formation during the hot deformation process is discussed. Our analyses reveal that deformation temperature is one of the most important parameters that determine the texture of SmCo5 grains. We suggest that diffusion creep plastic deformation occurs during hot deformation, which is very sensitive to the energy gain provided by an increase in temperature.

      • Photocatalytic and Hydrophilic Properties of TiO₂/ Fe₂O₃ Composite Films

        TiO₂/Fe₂O₃ composite thin films were prepared on common glass substrates by sol-gel processing and dip-drawing method. The effect of Fe₂O₃ content on the photocatalytic and hydrophilic properties of composite films was studied. The results indicate that the photocatalytic activities of composite TiO₂ films are superior to that of pure TiO₂ film, and the film containing 0.5% Fe₂O₃ has the best photocatalytic activity. The hydrophilicity is difference with variant Fe₂O₃ content, the films containing 0.05%~0.1% Fe₂O₃ have the best hydrophilicity and their contact angles are 0°.

        Transport of liquid mercury under pressure in double-walled carbon nanotubes

        In this paper, transport of liquid mercury under pressure through double-walled carbon nanotubes is studied using classical moleculardynamics simulations in conjunction with a pressure control model. The results indicate that wetting of double-walled carbon nanotubesby mercury occurs above a threshold pressure of liquid mercury. Liquid mercury can be transported through the inner tube of double-port eciency increases greatly with enlarging the inner tube size. The space between the two walls of double-walled carbon nanotubescan also transport the liquid mercury while the distance between the two walls is much larger than the radius of the inner tube. Transporteciency of double-walled carbon nanotubes is a little lower than that of single-walled carbon nanotubes while double-walled carbonnanotubes transport liquid more steadily than single-walled carbon nanotubes.
