In the society of the 21st century under multiphase media conditions, the rapidly glowing electronic media will replace the conventional paper media in a variety of areas. However, if human being still has an affinity for paper media and an instinct for hardcopy from electronic-based text or image, the new market will be created for the paper industry. To what extent the consumer choses paper media for output will depend upon the availability of functions of paper media appealing to human senses; i.e,"sensory functions of paper".
As a whole, on-demand type personal as well as business communications will increase in the next century and this trend will lead certainly to a rapidly expanding "contents hardcopy market" .
The technological progress of the paper industry in the 2151 century depends upon the market needs for higher products quality and higher efficiency of manufacturing process as well as an endeavour to overcome constraints from forest resource, energy, and environmental issues.
Under the conditions with above constraints, the paper media will be polarized into two categories;(l )paper for higher image reproduction capability for original image or text. and (2)paper for lower reproduction but with higher appeals for human senses.
To cope with these trends, psycho-physical analysis and a sensory engineering approach for developing new paper media is vitally required. Also newly emerged roles of paper physics in the multimedia age is pointed out associated with sensory functions of paper that are not well-understood so far.
Mediological Approach for Forecasting the Future of Paper Media
Onabe,Fumihiko 강원대학교 부설 창강제지 기술연구소 1998 제지기술 Vol.- No.12
This paper is intended to construct a framework for forecasting the future consumption of paper media in multimedia age, i.e.,where coexistence between paper media and electronic media will be foreseen. Characteristics of paper media were analyzed using media theories, and the factors affecting the selection of media under multiphase media conditions were pointed out. Human factors of media, i.e., affinity for human being are the controlling factors for selecting media, although the cost and efficiency factors are not less important. On the basis of analytical results, a qualitative model for forecasting the future of paper media was proposed. Finally, the research strategy of the Laboratory of Paper Science of the University of Tokyo will be briefly given.
The Role of Ionic Groups of Latices in Coating Process
Lee, Yong-Kyu,Kim, Chang-Keun,Onabe, Fumihiko 한국공업화학회 2002 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.8 No.5
The styrene-butadiene based anionic and amphoteric latices were prepared and then the flow and electrokinetic behavior of these latices were evaluated. The interaction of these latices with pigment particles and base paper were also determined. The interaction of three component system consisting of amphoteric latex, anionic latex and clay particles was also examined. The effect of the difference of anionic and amphoteric groups on the coating color properties, coating layer structure and the printability are presented. Based on a variety of component systems having ionic latices, the role of ionic groups of latices in a variety of phenomena in coating process, such as the control of binder migration using amphoteric latex-based was color discussed in detail.
