The global agricultural direct yield loss is estimated up to 40% and minimizing such loss is therefore crucial for future sustainability of global crop production. The discovery of RNA-mediated gene silencing mechanism has improved our understanding on gene expression and their regulation. The mechanism was later found applicable for controlling various plant pathogens. Recent discoveries indicated that plant small RNAs are involved in plant defence not only against viruses but also extended to other pathogens, such as insect pests and fungi. This fnding showed that RNA-mediated gene silencing is a conserved strategy employed by plant as a defence mechanism and will boost the application of RNA-mediated gene silencing to improve crop resistance against various pests and diseases. This review provided summaries of the application of RNA-mediated gene silencing in the plant protection against various pests and diseases including from nematodes, insects, fungi, and viruses. The strategies used and signifcant fndings were also discussed and this information can be considered for future planning of similar study. This review also provided the latest trends and potential applications of dsRNA via non-transgenic approach to control pests and diseases, namely spray-induced gene silencing. The advantages and disadvantages of application of RNA-mediated gene silencing in plant protection via transgenic and non-transgenic approaches were also discussed. The application of RNA-mediated gene silencing could ofer a promising solution for plant protection against pests and diseases.

This technical paper is a study on the unique displacements of Shotcrete Lining at the mined tunnel during excavation period through deep consideration with real time data from monitoring instrumentations correlation with the numerical analysis to identify the rock stresses and the rock spring points at the working face of the Conventional tunnelling by the Drill and Blast, based on the geological face mapping results of the project NS2, Transmission cable tunnel project in Singapore. The created geometry of numerical model was prepared to the real mined tunnel construction site including, vertical shaft, construction adit, tunnel junction area, and 2 enlargement caverns. The convergence measurements by the monitoring instrumentation were performed during the tunnel excavation and shaft sinking construction stages to guarantee the safety of complicated underground structures.

Medication noncompliance is a major medical problem worldwide and remains a huge challenge for modern physicians to promote patient adherence to the prescribed course of treatments. It often demands a great deal of resource in order to ensure that the correct medication is being taken by the patient at the appropriate times. In this paper, we present the subtle design and implementation issues of a novel smart mote-based wireless medication management system which can improve the rate of medication compliance among persons with dementia based on multimodal sensors, actuators and mobile phone or PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) based technology. The proposed system allows different stakeholders to automatically monitor patient’s behavior and provide adaptive assistive interventions such as prompts or reminders in the form of visual, audio or text cues for patient adherence to the medication regimen. In addition, mobile phone and PDA applications have been developed to provide a number of novel services to the caregivers that facilitate them in their care provision and also to physicians for clinical assessment of dementia patients on anytime, anywhere basis in a context enlightened fashion.

This paper presents a novel smart Fiber Bragg Grating sensor system which automatically monitors the behaviour of bedridden patients and their vital signs such as pulse rate based on indicative spatio-temporal signature for adaptive intervention triggering and activity planning. In particular, we present the subtle design, fabrication, calibration, implementation and deployment issues of the FBG pressure sensors to be used in a home or hospital to prevent bedsore generation, patients falling out of the bed or chair, and life threatening situations such as patient"s pulse rate weakening, etc. In addition, we provide a reusable middleware support system by exploiting Semantic Web standards to enable a number of novel services that facilitate caregiving and clinical assessment of bedridden patients in a context enlightened fashion.
