      • Sustainable Management of a Family Business

        Flá,vio de Sã,o Pedro Filho 세계문화관광학회 2010 Conference Proceedings Vol.11 No.0

The indigenous integration to the Brazilian civilization continues a critical paradox, with postponed solutions, while victims continue to be the excluded ones. Reduced to the condition of incapable, the Brazilian aboriginal is considered part of the “Estatuto do Ídio” (Indian Statute), a generated normative instrument at the time of the military dictatorship that devastated Brazil. This picture tries to unveil the reality of the Paiter Suruípeople, as reference, in an inquiry directed toward their social inclusion through the indigenous ecotourism. The focus of this study stems from a multidisciplinary approach, involving both Ethodevelopment and Ecodevelopment theories, applying a study of case type of research. The enterprise is aimed to take advantage of the indigenous immaterial patrimony, a scenic beauty of their lands, coupled with managerial techniques in new modeled Brazil.

Morphology of Electrospun Non-Woven Membranes of Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene): Porous and Fibers

Guilherme Dognani,Flávio Camargo Cabrera,Aldo Eloizo Job,Deuber Lincon da Silva Agostini 한국섬유공학회 2019 Fibers and polymers Vol.20 No.3

In this paper, poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) nanofibers membranes were fabricated by facilesingle-capillary electrospinning at different times of production. The materials were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), contact angle (CA), mercury porosity intrusion (MIP), Tensile tests, capillary flow porosity (CFP) and, BET surface by nitrogen adsorption-desorption. The membranes were fabricated varying the fibers density, the thickness and the morphology. The samples presented a good fiber diameter distribution and an average diameter of 321 nm. AFM results showed high porosity (82.7-87.5 %), a high contact angle of 159.2 o, mean pore size of 0.637 μm and hydrophobicity of the membranes. A low value of permeate pure water flux, 5.2 %, was observed for the densest fabricated membrane. The porosity of fibers diameters was similar for all samples, which is an important parameter as they can be potential materials for membrane distillation process.

Test Methods for the Characterization of Polypropylene Fiber Reinforced Concrete: A Comparative Analysis

Raphael Palmier Manfredi,Flávio de Andrade Silva 대한토목학회 2020 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.24 No.3

Fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) has been used for many different construction applications and many testing protocols have been developed to determine their mechanical behavior. The present paper focuses on the comparisons between four major standard mechanical tests used for FRC. Polypropylene fibers were used as reinforcement in volume ratios of 3 kg/m³, 6 kg/m³ and 10 kg/m³ in a self-consolidating high-strength concrete. The flexural beam tests according to American and European standards were carried on through a closed loop type of control. Comparisons include crack post-peak strength and energy absorption values. The European flexural beam test showed to be more precise for low ductile concretes (i.e., low fiber volume fractions). This is due to the notch and different methods used for instrumenting the specimen. The square panel test due to its boundary conditions showed much higher results with a deflection-hardening type of behavior. Since the frame comes into full contact with the specimen, that creates a more rigid material response. This response differs from the other three tests since their support conditions allow rotations and induces cracks to appear in determined locations.

Purification and Biochemical Properties of a Glucose-Stimulated β-D-Glucosidase Produced by Humicola grisea var. thermoidea Grown on Sugarcane Bagasse

Cesar Vanderlei Nascimento,Flávio Henrique Moreira Souza,Douglas Chodi Masui,Francisco Assis Leone,Rosane Marina Peralta,João Atílio Jorge,Rosa Prazeres Melo Furriel 한국미생물학회 2010 The journal of microbiology Vol.48 No.1

The effect of several carbon sources on the production of mycelial-bound β-glucosidase by Humicola grisea var. thermoidea in submerged fermentation was investigated. Maximum production occurred when cellulose was present in the culture medium, but higher specific activities were achieved with cellobiose or sugarcane bagasse. Xylose or glucose (1%) in the reaction medium stimulated β-glucosidase activity by about 2-fold in crude extracts from mycelia grown in sugarcane bagasse. The enzyme was purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation, followed by Sephadex G-200 and DEAE-cellulose chromatography, showing a single band in PAGE and SDS-PAGE. The β-glucosidase had a carbohydrate content of 43% and showed apparent molecular masses of 57 and 60 kDa, as estimated by SDS-PAGE and gel filtration, respectively. The optimal pH and temperature were 6.0 and 50°C, respectively. The purified enzyme was thermostable up to 60 min in water at 55°C and showed half-lives of 7 and 14 min when incubated in the absence or presence of 50 mM glucose, respectively, at 60°C. The enzyme hydrolyzed p-nitrophenyl-β-D-glucopyranoside, p-nitrophenyl-β-Dgalactopyranoside,p-nitrophenyl-β-D-fucopyranoside, p-nitrophenyl-β-D-xylopyranoside, o-nitrophenyl-β-Dgalactopyranoside,lactose, and cellobiose. The best synthetic and natural substrates were p-nitrophenyl-β-Dfucopyranoside and cellobiose, respectively. Purified enzyme activity was stimulated up to 2-fold by glucose or xylose at concentrations from 25 to 200 mM. The addition of purified or crude β-glucosidase to a reaction medium containing Trichoderma reesei cellulases increased the saccharification of sugarcane bagasse by about 50%. These findings suggest that H. grisea var. thermoidea β-glucosidase has a potential for biotechnological applications in the bioconversion of lignocellulosic materials.

The value of PET/CT for cytoreductive surgery selection in recurrent ovarian carcinoma

Rafael Leite Nunes,Flávio Rodrigues Teixeira,Thiago Pereira Diniz,Carlos Chaves Faloppa,Henrique Mantoan,Alexandre Andre Balieiro Anastacio da Costa,Glauco Baiocchi 대한부인종양학회 2023 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.34 No.3

Objective: To evaluate the value of positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in predicting no residual disease (NRD) after secondary cytoreductive surgery (SCS) compared with MSK criteria, the iMODEL, and the AGO score. Methods: We analyzed 112 patients with platinum-sensitive ovarian carcinoma who underwent SCS. We excluded patients for whom PET/CT was not performed, those without sufficient data, and who received chemotherapy before SCS. Ultimately, 69 patients were included. Results: Variables that correlated with NRD were peritoneal carcinomatosis index (odds ratio [OR]=0.91; 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.83–0.99; p=0.044), European Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status (ECOG) 0 (OR=8.0; 95% CI=1.34–47.5; p=0.022), and ≤2 lesions by PET/CT (OR=4.36; 95% CI=1.07–17.7; p=0.039). Of the patients with ≤2 lesions by PET/CT, 48 (92.3%) underwent complete SCS. The sensitivity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy of PET/CT for NRD were 85.7%, 92.3%, 33.3%, and 81.2%, respectively. NRD was achieved after fulfilling the MSK criteria, iMODEL and AGO Score in 89.1%, 88.1% and 85.9%, respectively. The accuracy of the MSK criteria, iMODEL, and AGO score in predicting NRD was 87%, 83.3%, and 77.3%, respectively. The PET/CT findings agreed well with the AGO score and iMODEL. The addition of PET/CT to these models increased the NRD rates (92.2%, 91.8%, and 89.4% for MSK+PET/CT, iMODEL+PET/CT, and AGO+PET/CT, respectively), but lowered their accuracy. Conclusion: We observed NRD in 92.3% of patients with ≤2 lesions by PET/CT, with an accuracy of 81.2%. PET/CT did not increase the accuracy of the MSK criteria, iMODEL, or AGO score models.

      • Structural novelty detection based on sparse autoencoders and control charts

        Rafaelle P. Finotti,Carmelo Gentile,Flávio Barbosa,Alexandre Cury 국제구조공학회 2022 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.81 No.5

The powerful data mapping capability of computational deep learning methods has been recently explored in academic works to develop strategies for structural health monitoring through appropriate characterization of dynamic responses. In many cases, these studies concern laboratory prototypes and finite element models to validate the proposed methodologies. Therefore, the present work aims to investigate the capability of a deep learning algorithm called Sparse Autoencoder (SAE) specifically focused on detecting structural alterations in real-case studies. The idea is to characterize the dynamic responses via SAE models and, subsequently, to detect the onset of abnormal behavior through the Shewhart T control chart, calculated with SAE extracted features. The anomaly detection approach is exemplified using data from the Z24 bridge, a classical benchmark, and data from the continuous monitoring of the San Vittore bell-tower, Italy. In both cases, the influence of temperature is also evaluated. The proposed approach achieved good performance, detecting structural changes even under temperature variations.

What Is the Ideal Core Number for Ultrasound-Guided Prostate Biopsy?

Renato Caretta Chambó,Fábio Hissachi Tsuji,Flávio de Oliveira Lima,Hamilto Akihissa Yamamoto,Carlos Márcio Nóbrega de Jesus 대한비뇨의학회 2014 Investigative and Clinical Urology Vol.55 No.11

Purpose: We evaluated the utility of 10-, 12-, and 16-core prostate biopsies for detectingprostate cancer (PCa) and correlated the results with prostate-specific antigen (PSA)levels, prostate volumes, Gleason scores, and detection rates of high-grade prostaticintraepithelial neoplasia (HGPIN) and atypical small acinar proliferation (ASAP). Materials and Methods: A prospective controlled study was conducted in 354 consecutivepatients with various indications for prostate biopsy. Sixteen-core biopsy specimenswere obtained from 351 patients. The first 10-core biopsy specimens were obtainedbilaterally from the base, middle third, apex, medial, and latero-lateral regions. Afterward, six additional punctures were performed bilaterally in the areas more lateralto the base, middle third, and apex regions, yielding a total of 16-core biopsyspecimens. The detection rate of carcinoma in the initial 10-core specimens was comparedwith that in the 12- and 16-core specimens. Results: No significant differences in the cancer detection rate were found between thethree biopsy protocols. PCa was found in 102 patients (29.06%) using the 10-core protocol,in 99 patients (28.21%) using the 12-core protocol, and in 107 patients (30.48%) usingthe 16-core protocol (p=0.798). The 10-, 12-, and 16-core protocols were comparedwith stratified PSA levels, stratified prostate volumes, Gleason scores, and detectionrates of HGPIN and ASAP; no significant differences were found. Conclusions: Cancer positivity with the 10-core protocol was not significantly differentfrom that with the 12- and 16-core protocols, which indicates that the 10-core protocolis acceptable for performing a first biopsy.
