Frequencies, Inheritance of Porcine FSH-${\beta}$ Retroposon and its Association with Reproductive Traits

        Li, Feng'e,Xiong, Yuanzhu,Deng, Changyan,Jiang, Siwen,Zheng, Rong Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2002 Animal Bioscience Vol.15 No.2

The fragment in intron I of FSH-${\beta}$ gene was amplified by PCR. According to the polymorphism, we analyzed the distribution of FSH-${\beta}$ retroposon in different pig breeds; its inheritance pattern in Large White${\times}$Meishan reference family; and the association of FSH-${\beta}$ retroposon with litter size, female reproductive organs measurement, ultrasonic backfat and other traits. The results showed that almost each Chinese indigenous pig had the retroposon, while foreign pig breeds rarely had; the frequencies of porcine FSH-${\beta}$ retroposon were strongly associated with breeds (p<0.01); the pattern of inheritance was consistent with Mendelian fashion; total number born (TNB) and number born alive (NBA) were increased per FSH-${\beta}$ retroposon (p<0.01) with additive effects of 1.2-1.8 and 1.4-1.8 pigs/litter, respectively; between the FSH-${\beta}$ retroposon carriers and non-carriers, there was an insignificant difference in the measurement of female reproductive organs, body weight at birth, backfat thickness, loin meat height, lean meat percentage, teat number, days to 100 kg, and average daily gain.

Preoperative Patient Expectation of Discharge Planning is an Essential Component in Total Knee Arthroplasty

        ( James E. Feng ),( Afshin A. Anoushiravani ),( Jessica S. Morton ),( William Petersen ),( Vivek Singh ),( Ran Schwarzkopf ),( William Macaulay ) 대한슬관절학회 2022 대한슬관절학회지 Vol.34 No.-

Purpose: A better understanding of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) candidate expectations within the perioperative setting will enable clinicians to promote patient-centered practices, optimize recovery times, and enhance quality metrics. In the current study, TKA candidates were surveyed pre- and postoperatively to elucidate the relationship between patient expectations and length of stay (LOS). Material and methods: This is a prospective study of patients undergoing TKA between December 2017 and August 2018. Patients were electronically administered surveys regarding their discharge plan 10 days pre-/postoperatively. All patients were categorized into three cohorts based on their LOS: 1, 2, and 3+ days. The effect of preoperative discharge education on patient postoperative satisfaction was evaluated. Results: In total, 221 TKAs were included, of which 83 were discharged on postoperative day (POD) 1, 96 on POD-2, and 42 POD-3+. Female gender, increasing body mass index (BMI), and surgical time correlated with increased LOS. Preoperative discussions regarding LOS occurred in 84.62% (187/221) of patients but did correlate with differences in LOS. However, patients discharged on POD-1 were more inclined to same-day surgery preoperatively. Patients discharged on POD-3+ were found to be more uncomfortable regarding their discharge during the preoperative phase. Multivariable regressions demonstrated that preoperative discharge discussion was positively correlated with home discharge. Conclusion: Physician-driven discussion regarding patient discharge did not alter patient satisfaction or length of stay but did correlate with improved odds of home discharge. These findings underscore the importance of patient education, shared decision-making, and managing patient expectations.

Finite-Time Functional Observers for Descriptor Systems

        Jun-e Feng,James Lam,Shengyuan Xu 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2009 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.7 No.3

This paper deals with the problem of finite-time functional observer design for linear descriptor systems, which converges in finite time exactly. The observer comprises two infinite-time functional observers and a finite delay element. The technique in designing such a class of observers for state-space systems can not be directly applied to deal with the present problem due to the algebraic structure of descriptor systems. A sufficient condition to guarantee the existence of such an observer is obtained in terms of certain rank conditions. Moreover, special cases for state and reduced-order ob-servers are also analyzed. Numerical simulation is used to illustrate the developed method.

On Dimensions of Linear Discrete Dimension-unbounded Systems

        Jun-e Feng,Biao Wang,Yongyuan Yu 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2021 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.19 No.1

This letter investigates the variance of state dimensions of linear discrete dimension-unbounded systems, which are a class of cross-dimensional systems. First, the dimensional relationship of states, initial values andsystem matrices of some special cases is discussed. Then, for the general case, to directly calculate the transitiontime and state dimensions after the transition time, an algorithm is established on the basis of the iterative time, dimensions of initial values and system matrices. Finally, there is an illustrative example to show the effectivenessof these obtained results

      • Astrocytic water channel aquaporin-4 modulates brain plasticity in both mice and humans: a potential gliogenetic mechanism underlying language-associated learning

        Woo, J,Kim, J E,Im, J J,Lee, J,Jeong, H S,Park, S,Jung, S-Y,An, H,Yoon, S,Lim, S M,Lee, S,Ma, J,Shin, E Y,Han, Y-E,Kim, B,Lee, E H,Feng, L,Chun, H,Yoon, B-E,Kang, I,Dager, S R,Lyoo, I K,Lee, C J Macmillan Publishers Limited, part of Springer Nat 2018 Molecular psychiatry Vol.23 No.4

The role of astrocytes in brain plasticity has not been extensively studied compared with that of neurons. Here we adopted integrative translational and reverse-translational approaches to explore the role of an astrocyte-specific major water channel in the brain, aquaporin-4 (AQP4), in brain plasticity and learning. We initially identified the most prevalent genetic variant of AQP4 (single nucleotide polymorphism of rs162008 with C or T variation, which has a minor allele frequency of 0.21) from a human database (n = 60 706) and examined its functionality in modulating the expression level of AQP4 in an in vitro luciferase reporter assay. In the following experiments, AQP4 knock-down in mice not only impaired hippocampal volumetric plasticity after exposure to enriched environment but also caused loss of long-term potentiation after theta-burst stimulation. In humans, there was a cross-sectional association of rs162008 with gray matter (GM) volume variation in cortices, including the vicinity of the Perisylvian heteromodal language area (Sample 1, n = 650). GM volume variation in these brain regions was positively associated with the semantic verbal fluency. In a prospective follow-up study (Sample 2, n = 45), the effects of an intensive 5-week foreign language (English) learning experience on regional GM volume increase were modulated by this AQP4 variant, which was also associated with verbal learning capacity change. We then delineated in mice mechanisms that included AQP4-dependent transient astrocytic volume changes and astrocytic structural elaboration. We believe our study provides the first integrative evidence for a gliogenetic basis that involves AQP4, underlying language-associated brain plasticity.

Study on Global Optimization and Control Strategy Development for a PHEV Charging Facility

Feng Guo,Inoa, E.,Woongchul Choi,Jin Wang IEEE 2012 IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology VT Vol.61 No.6

This paper provides a full study of a photovoltaic (PV)-aided plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) charging facility by investigating the two most challenging technical issues: 1) sizing of the local energy storage (LES) unit and 2) control strategies of the facility. First, the paper proposes a method for determining the optimal size of LES for a charging facility. Second, the paper develops a control strategy for the integration of the PHEV charging stations with the proposed LES and PVs. The proposed LES-sizing method, which is based on optimal control theory, minimizes a cost function based on the average value of kilowatt-hour price, irradiance, and PHEVs' usage patterns. A power-loss/temperature-based battery model and a temperature-based charging strategy previously developed by the authors are utilized to determine the optimal LES size. Afterward, with the optimized facility parameters, a detailed circuit model of the charging facility, including PVs, PHEVs, and LES, is constructed with a real-time simulation system. While an experimental setup for this kind of complex and high-cost system was not readily feasible, real-time simulation was carried out to prove the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. To validate the effectiveness and accuracy of the real-time simulation, control hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and power-inverter-based experiments have been carried out at the subsystem level.

SIMULTANEITY IN THE STUDY OF EXPOPTS AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

        LEE, FENG YAO,COLE, WILLIAM E. 한국국제경제학회 1994 International Economic Journal Vol.8 No.2

A number of empirical studies have concluded that exports promote economic growth. In each case, a single equation model was estimated by OLS with the magnitude of the export growth coefficient being consistently small, albeit significant. The present study of extensive cross-country data indicates the likelihood of simultaneous determination of exports and economic growth. The rate of growth of exports is then treated as an endogenous variable with the equation estimated by 2SLS in a number of cases in which various plausible combinations are assumed for the system. The 2Sls results generally amplify the earlier findings but lend to show that exports probably play a more important role than was previously indicated. [O19, F43]

Input-output Finite-time Stability of Switched Singular Continuous-time Systems

        Tian Feng,Baowei Wu,Yue-E Wang,YangQuan Chen 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2021 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.19 No.5

This paper is concerned with the problem of input-output finite-time stability (IO-FTS) for a class of switched singular continuous-time systems. First, the concept of IO-FTS is extended to switched singular systems. Then, by using the average dwell time switching approach and constructing multiple Lyapunov functions, a sufficient condition of IO-FTS for the considered system is presented in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Furthermore, based on the derived conditions, a suitable state feedback controller is designed to stabilize the switched singular systems. Finally, an illustrative example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

        NF-κB in cancer therapy.

        Li, Feng,Zhang, Jingwen,Arfuso, Frank,Chinnathambi, Arunachalam,Zayed, M E,Alharbi, Sulaiman Ali,Kumar, Alan Prem,Ahn, Kwang Seok,Sethi, Gautam Springer-Verlag 2015 Archives of toxicology Vol.89 No.5

The transcription factor nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kappa B) has attracted increasing attention in the field of cancer research from last few decades. Aberrant activation of this transcription factor is frequently encountered in a variety of solid tumors and hematological malignancies. NF-kappa B family members and their regulated genes have been linked to malignant transformation, tumor cell proliferation, survival, angiogenesis, invasion/metastasis, and therapeutic resistance. In this review, we highlight the diverse molecular mechanism(s) by which the NF-kappa B pathway is constitutively activated in different types of human cancers, and the potential role of various oncogenic genes regulated by this transcription factor in cancer development and progression. Additionally, various pharmacological approaches employed to target the deregulated NF-kappa B signaling pathway, and their possible therapeutic potential in cancer therapy is also discussed briefly.
