Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) represents a promising solvent in the synthesis of biodiesel givenits enhanced mass transfer properties as well as its high affinity to the fatty acids. In this work, the phaseequilibria data of 5 major fatty acids: palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acid in SC-CO2 werestudied experimentally at temperature between 343.15 to 373.15 K and pressures between 8 to 24 MPa. The experimental data were correlated using Peng–Robinson Equation of State with van der Waals(PR-vdW), Panagiotopoulos-Reid (PR-PR), and Stryjek-Vera (PR-SV) combining rules. Thefitting result byPR-PR was shown to be more accurate and consistent than those of PR-vdW and PR-SV. From these data,we found that oleic acid has the greatest solubility in SC-CO2, followed by linoleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, and lastly, linolenic acid.

The use of extractives-free SCB (eSCB) as a renewable adsorbent for removing rhodamine B (RhB) in waterwas explored to contribute to strategies for conserving the environment and better use of naturalresources. Different initial pH (3–9) and RhB concentrations (10–1100 mg/L) at various temperatures(303–333 K) during adsorption were carried out to assess the uptake kinetics and equilibrium uptake. The Elovich and the multi-mechanistic models best describe the adsorption kinetics. The adsorption ofRhB on eSCB is primarily physisorption but may also involve chemisorption under certain conditions. The adsorption process co-occurs within and on the surface of the eSCB matrix. The adsorption capacityof eSCB for RhB is 88.71 mg/g at 318 K, and the Brouers-Sotologo model best describes the equilibriumuptake isotherm. The adsorption of RhB on eSCB is a spontaneous and exothermic process. This studyis the first to report on the regeneration and reuse of eSCB as an adsorbent for RhB. Extractives-freeSCB can be reused for at least 7 cycles, using 95% ethanol to remove the adsorbed dyes between cycles. The reused eSCB adsorbent retains 80 % of its adsorption capacity even after its 7th reuse.
