Tailored Sun Safety Messages for Outdoor Workers

2023 Safety and health at work Vol.14 No.1

Background: Messaging surrounding skin cancer prevention has previously focused on the general public and emphasized how or when activities should be undertaken to reduce solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure. Generic messages may not be applicable to all settings, and should be tailored to protect unique and/or highly susceptible subpopulations, such as outdoor workers. The primary objective of this study was to develop a set of tailored, practical, harm-reducing sun safety messages that will better support outdoor workers and their employers in reducing the risk of solar UVR exposure and UVRrelated occupational illnesses. Methods: We adapted a core set of sun safety messages previously developed for the general population to be more applicable and actionable by outdoor workers and their employers. This study used an integrated knowledge translation approach and a modified Delphi method (which uses a survey-based consensus process) to tailor the established set of sun safety messages for use for outdoor worker populations. Results: The tailored messages were created with a consideration for what is feasible for outdoor workers, and provide users with key facts, recommendations, and tips related to preventing skin cancer, eye damage, and heat stress, specifically when working outdoors. Conclusion: The resulting tailored messages are a set of evidence-based, expert- approved, and stakeholder- workshopped messages that can be used in a variety of work settings as part of an exposure control plan for employers with outdoor workers.

Oral rehabilitation of Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome patients by dental implants: a systematic review

        Fazele Atarbashi-Moghadam,Saede Atarbashi-Moghadam,Setare Kazemifard,Soran Sijanivandi,Mahshid Namdari 대한구강악안면외과학회 2020 대한구강악안면외과학회지 Vol.46 No.4

Objectives: Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder. These patients lose their teeth at a young age and are in need of prosthetic rehabilitation. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the success of dental implant placement in these patients. Materials and Methods: An electronic search was performed in PubMed Central, Scopus, and Web of Science using the keyword “Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome” AND “dental implant” OR “prosthodontics”. Articles reporting implant placement in patients with PLS until July 2019 were included. Results: Assessment of the included 11 articles reporting 15 cases showed 136 implant placements in these patients. Implant failure occurred in 3 patients (20 implants). The peri-implantitis and failure rate was higher in the maxilla. Meta-analysis showed the probability of failure to be 7% (95% confidence interval [CI] 0%-31%) for maxillary implants and 2% (95% CI 0%-9%) for mandibular implants. The follow-up time ranged between 1 and 20 years. Healing after bone graft and implant placement in these patients was uneventful. Conclusion: Dental implants may be a viable treatment option for PLS patients. Implantation can help preserve alveolar bone if the patients’ immunological and growing conditions are well-considered and proper oral hygiene and compliance with the maintenance program are continued.

Combined Use of Sewage Sludge Ash and Silica Fume in Concrete

        Fazel Azarhomayun,Mohammad Haji,Mahdi Kioumarsi,Ali Kheyroddin 한국콘크리트학회 2023 International Journal of Concrete Structures and M Vol.17 No.5

The lack of adequate space for sewage sludge disposal has become a significant challenge in many countries. Landfilling and using sewage sludge as fertilizer in agricultural lands are the main methods for disposal. However, these methods can result in soil and groundwater contamination as well as heavy metal and microbial pollution in soil. An alternative disposal method is using sewage sludge ash (SSA) in concrete production. If the sludge ash is reactive, it can replace a portion of cement in concrete; otherwise, it can be used as a filler. In the present study, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) experiments were conducted to determine the elemental composition of sewage sludge. Then, the sewage sludge was incinerated, and XRF and X-ray diffraction (XRD) tests were performed on the resulting sewage sludge ash. The ash was utilized in different proportions in the mortar and concrete specimens, and compressive strength tests were conducted on the resulting specimens. The results indicate that using 20% SSA instead of cement resulted in a 25% reduction in compressive strength in concrete specimens. However, the combination of 10% silica fume and 10% SSA was the optimal combination to compensate for the reduction in compressive strength caused using SSA.

Ginsenoside Rd and ischemic stroke; a short review of literatures

Seyed Fazel Nabavi,Antoni Sureda,Solomon Habtemariam,Seyed Mohammad Nabavi 고려인삼학회 2015 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.39 No.4

Panax ginseng is a well-known economic medical plant that is widely used in Chinese traditional medicine. This species contains a unique class of natural productsdginsenosides. Recent clinical and experimental studies have presented numerous lines of evidence on the promising role of ginsenosides on different diseases including neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and certain types of cancer. Nowadays, most of the attention has focused on ginsenoside Rd as a neuroprotective agent to attenuate ischemic stroke damages. Some of the evidence showed that ginsenoside Rd ameliorates ischemic stroke-induced damages through the suppression of oxidative stress and inflammation. Ginsenoside Rd can prolong neural cells’ survival through the upregulation of the endogenous antioxidant system, phosphoinositide-3-kinase/AKT and extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase 1/2 pathways, preservation of mitochondrial membrane potential, suppression of the nuclear factor-kappa B, transient receptor potential melastatin, acid sensing ion channels 1a, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1, protein tyrosine kinase activation, as well as reduction of cytochrome c-releasing and apoptosis-inducing factor. In the current work, we review the available reports on the promising role of ginsenoside Rd on ischemic stroke. We also discuss its chemistry, source, and the molecular mechanism underlying this effect.

      • Mechanical and Electronic Properties of π-Conjugated Metal Bis(dithiolene) Complex Sheets

Shojaei, Fazel,Hahn, Jae Ryang,Kang, Hong Seok American Chemical Society 2014 Chemistry of materials Vol.26 No.9

<P>Using first-principles calculations, we have investigated the mechanical properties and electronic structures of π–conjugated metal bis(dithiolene) complex sheets (MC4S4), where M = Ni and Pd. First, the sheets are much softer than graphene due to their large porosity. At zero strain, NiC4S4 is a semiconductor with an indirect gap, while PdC4S4 is a metal. Under either biaxial or uniaxial strain, our band structure analysis demonstrates that the band gap of the NiC4S4 slowly decreases to zero with increased strain, which can be attributed to the gradual weakening of π-bonds of the sheet. However, the PdC4S4 becomes a magnetic system beyond the deformation threshold that causes a plastic deformation along the <I>X</I>-axis. In addition, we also observe that both two-dimensional sheets undergo different types of nonreversible plastic changes under the uniaxial strains along the <I>X</I>- and <I>Y</I>-axes.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/cmatex/2014/cmatex.2014.26.issue-9/cm500767u/production/images/medium/cm-2014-00767u_0011.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/cm500767u'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

      • Electronic structure and photocatalytic band offset of few-layer GeP2

Shojaei, Fazel,Hahn, Jae Ryang,Kang, Hong Seok Royal Society of Chemistry 2017 Journal of Materials Chemistry A Vol.5 No.42

<P>Based on a sophisticated crystal structure prediction method, we propose two-dimensional (2D) GeP2in the tetragonal (T) phase never observed for other group IV-V compounds. The bulk of 2D GeP2is more stable than both 2D orthogonal (O) and three-dimensional pyrite (P) phases that have been experimentally observed for group IV-V compounds. According to our calculations of phonon dispersion relations and elastic constants, as well as<I>ab initio</I>molecular dynamics simulation, monolayers of both the T and O phases (penta-GeP2and O-GeP2, respectively) are dynamically, mechanically, and thermally stable. In addition, our HSE06 calculation shows that these monolayers are semiconductors with band gaps in the visible region. Among the various stacking patterns of their bilayers, specific ones are identified to be most stable, which are still semiconductors with band gaps redshifted in the visible region. Different from the case of their bulk, few-layers of O-GeP2are more stable than those of penta-GeP2up to a pentalayer. Furthermore, band offset with respect to the Fermi levels of appropriate half-reactions shows that both n-type few-layer penta-GeP2and O-GeP2can be useful in photocatalyzed CO2splitting to CO as well as in photocatalyzed water splitting, specifically under acidic conditions.</P>

Sub-word Based Offline Handwritten Farsi Word Recognition Using Recurrent Neural Network

        Mohammad Fazel Younessy Ghadikolaie,Ehsanolah Kabir,Farbod Razzazi 한국전자통신연구원 2016 ETRI Journal Vol.38 No.4

In this paper, we present a segmentation-based method for offline Farsi handwritten word recognition. Although most segmentation-based systems suffer from segmentation errors within the first stages of recognition, using the inherent features of the Farsi writing script, we have segmented the words into sub-words. Instead of using a single complex classifier with many (N) output classes, we have created N simple recurrent neural network classifiers, each having only true/false outputs with the ability to recognize sub-words. Through the extraction of the number of sub-words in each word, and labeling the position of each sub-word (beginning/middle/ end), many of the sub-word classifiers can be pruned, and a few remaining sub-word classifiers can be evaluated during the sub-word recognition stage. The candidate sub-words are then joined together and the closest word from the lexicon is chosen. The proposed method was evaluated using the Iranshahr database, which consists of 17,000 samples of Iranian handwritten city names. The results show the high recognition accuracy of the proposed method.

      • Effect of Si–Si Bonds in Silicon-Doped α-Phosphorene Bilayers: Two-Dimensional Layers and One-Dimensional Nanoribbons

Shojaei, Fazel,Hahn, Jae Ryang,Kang, Hong Seok American Chemical Society 2016 The Journal of Physical Chemistry Part C Vol.120 No.30

<P>We investigate the geometrical and electronic structures of various configurations of 2Si-doped two-dimensional (2D) bilayers of black phosphorene (alpha P)(2), in which two P atoms are substituted by Si atoms. Our first-principles calculations suggest that doping is cooperative, which is clearly manifested in the formation of Si-Si bonds in the two most stable configurations. As a result, both configurations become indirect-gap semiconductors, which differ from that of the pristine 2D bilayer. On the one hand, 2Si-doped armchair phosphorene nanoribbon (APNR) bilayers possess pseudodirect band gaps in the most stable configuration, which are one-dimensional materials cut with armchair edges saturated with hydrogen atoms. Comparisons of the deformation energy and the activation barrier suggest that Stone-Wales (SW) deformation can occur substantially more easily in the doped APNR than in carbon nanotubes, and molecular dynamics simulations show that the SW defect will be kinetically stable. This is because the deformation brings about shortening and strengthening of weak Si-Si bonds. As a result, the APNRs turn into real direct-gap materials.</P>
