Organic fertilizer is a vehicle through which MPs enter the agricultural soil. The main sources for manufacturing organic fertilizer are municipal and residential biowaste, which is often contaminated with plastics. Thus, organic fertilizer plays a vital role in the entry pathway of MPs into the agroecosys - tem. However, there are no standardized detection and quantification techniques available to analyze MPs from organic fertilizer and it is difficult to identify how much MPs are carried by organic fertilizer in an agroecosystem. This study overviews the sources of MPs in agricultural land and their adverse effects on soil health, organisms, and plants. Although MPs decrease bulk density of soil and enhance aeration, they negatively affect soil organisms. In addition, MPs negatively affect seed germination, growth, and development of plants. Therefore, in the future more research needs to be focused on optimizing a stan - dard method for the removal of MPs from organic fertilizer with sustainable farming to ensure food safety.
