The effect of thermocycling on the bonding of different restorative materials to access opening through porcelain fused to metal restorations

        Mohammed M. AL-Moaleem,Farhan Khalid Shah,Nausheen Saied Khan,Amit Porwal 대한치과보철학회 2011 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.3 No.4

PURPOSE Porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crowns provide the best treatment option for teeth that have a large or defective restoration. More than 20% of teeth with PFM crowns or bridges require non-surgical root canal treatment (NSRCT). This may be due to the effect of restorative procedures and the possible leakage of bacteria and or their by-products, which leads to the demise of the tooth pulp. Thus, this study was planned to compare the ability of the restorative materials to seal perforated PFM specimens. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study evaluates the ability of amalgam, composite or compomer restorative materials to close perforated PFM specimen's in-vitro. Ninety PFM specimens were constructed using Ni-Cr alloys and feldspathic porcelain, and then they were divided into 3 groups: amalgam (A), composite + Exite adhesive bond (B) and compomer + Syntac adhesive bond (C). All the PFM samples were embedded in an acrylic block to provide complete sealing of the hole from the bottom side. After the aging period, each group was further divided into 3 equal subgroups according to the thermocycling period (one week for 70 cycles, one month for 300 cycles and three months for 900 cycles). Each subgroup was put into containers containing dye (Pelikan INK), one maintained at 5℃ and the other at 55℃, each cycle for 30 sec time. The data obtained was analyzed by SPSS, 2006 using one way ANOVA test and student t-test and significant difference level at (P<.01). RESULTS The depth of dye penetration was measured at the interfaces of PFM and filling materials using Co-ordinate Vernier Microscope. The lowest levels of the dye penetration for the three groups, as well as subgroups were during the first week. The values of dye leakage had significantly increased by time intervals in subgroups A and C. CONCLUSION It was seen that amalgam showed higher leakage than composite while compomer showed the lowest level of leakage.

      • Comprehensive Engineering Geological Assessment of a Landslide Prone Section of Proposed New Urban Highway in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

( Afiq Farhan Abdul Rahim ),( Abd Rasid Jaapar ),( Muhammad Farid Mohamed Dali ),( Mustapha Atta ) 대한지질공학회 2019 대한지질공학회 학술발표회논문집 Vol.2019 No.2

Hilly areas to the east and north of Kuala Lumpur are known to be prone to landslide incidents as recorded in numerous historical cases involving life and property loss. Most historical incidence have been attributed to lack of proper planning and investigations, especially in terms of geology, engineering geology and geomorphological aspects. Therefore, this study aims to set up a good practice example in comprehensive engineering geological assessment - in this case, for a proposed urban highway at eastern Kuala Lumpur - along an engineering geologically challenging terrain. This study consists of the following components; terrain mapping (geomorphological study) and geohazards assessments along highway alignment to identify potential geotechnically challenging section, and geophysical survey with engineering geological assessment on specific identified sections to identify specific engineering geological issues. Lithology, structural geology and weathering profile are among factors identified contributing to issues in the study area which will affect construction and post-construction activities of the highway. The engineering geological assessment and model output from this study will be utilized for subsequent geotechnical works and stabilization design, which would address the challenges and any potential landslide in the region.

        Reduan Farhan Hanif,Shaari Rosly Mohd,Sayuti Nurul Syahirah Ahmad,Mustapha Noordin Mohamed,Abu Bakar Md Zuki,Sithambaram Shanmugavelu,Hamzah Hazilawati 한국독성학회 2020 Toxicological Research Vol.36 No.3

Melastoma malabathricum is a well-known herb in Malaysia where it being used in various ways for treatment of different diseases and ailments including skin problems. The study aims to investigate acute and subacute dermal toxicity of ethanolic extract of M. malabathricum leaves following to a single or repeated doses exposure. A total of 30 female Sprague-Dawley rats were grouped into 5 groups (n = 6 per group) for both acute and subacute toxicity study. The duration for each study was determined at 14 days for acute toxicity and 28 days for subacute toxicity. The rats were topically applied with the plant extract at three different doses; 2.5%, 5.0% and 10.0% on the shaved area of dorsal skin. For acute toxicity study, rats in all three groups received single application of the extract on the first day of the experimental period, while rats in subacute toxicity study were topically applied with the extract once daily for 28 days. Throughout the respective 14-day and 28-day study periods, all rats were monitored for any changes in their physical appearance and behavioural patterns that might develop due to toxic effects of the plant. There were no mortality or abnormal physical appearance, and physiological and behavioural changes observed in all rats in both studies. Body weights, kidney and liver weights, and both haematology and serum biochemistry results showed no significant (p > 0.05) differences between all groups in both studies. All of the findings were supported by normal macroscopic and microscopic architectures of liver, kidneys and skin of all rats applied topically with the extract. This study suggests that topical application of M. malabathricum leaf ethanolic extract at 2.5%, 5% and 10% does not induce acute and subacute adverse effects on the skin or systemic toxic reactions in rats.

      • Elastic buckling performance of FG porous plates embedded between CNTRC piezoelectric patches based on a novel quasi 3D-HSDT in hygrothermal environment

        Yujie Zhang,Zhihang Guo,Yimin Gong,Jianzhong Shi,Mohamed Hechmi El Ouni,Farhan Alhosny Techno-Press 2023 Advances in nano research Vol.15 No.2

The under-evaluation structure includes a functionally graded porous (FGP) core which is confined by two piezoelectric carbon nanotubes reinforced composite (CNTRC) layers. The whole structure rests on the Pasternak foundation. Using quasi-3D hyperbolic shear deformation theory, governing equations of a sandwich plate are driven. Moreover, face sheets are subjected to the electric field and the whole model is under thermal loading. The properties of all layers alter continuously along with thickness direction due to the CNTs and pores distributions. By conducting the current study, the results emerged in detail to assess the effects of different parameters on buckling of structure. As instance, it is revealed that highest and lowest critical buckling load and consequently stiffness, is due to the V-A and A-V CNTs dispersion type, respectively. Furthermore, it is revealed that by porosity coefficient enhancement, critical buckling load and consequently, stiffness reduces dramatically. Current paper results can be used in various high-tech industries as aerospace factories.

Nor Azman Ismail,Cheah Wen Chai,Hussein Samma,Md Sah Salam,Layla Hasan,Nur Haliza Abdul Wahab,Farhan Mohamed,Wong Yee Leng,Mohd Foad Rohani 한국인터넷정보학회 2022 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.16 No.2

Nowadays, many attendance applications utilise biometric techniques such as the face, fingerprint, and iris recognition. Biometrics has become ubiquitous in many sectors. Due to the advancement of deep learning algorithms, the accuracy rate of biometric techniques has been improved tremendously. This paper proposes a web-based attendance system that adopts facial recognition using open-source deep learning pre-trained models. Face recognition procedural steps using web technology and database were explained. The methodology used the required pre-trained weight files embedded in the procedure of face recognition. The face recognition method includes two important processes: registration of face datasets and face matching. The extracted feature vectors were implemented and stored in an online database to create a more dynamic face recognition process. Finally, user testing was conducted, whereby users were asked to perform a series of biometric verification. The testing consists of facial scans from the front, right (30 – 45 degrees) and left (30 – 45 degrees). Reported face recognition results showed an accuracy of 92% with a precision of 100% and recall of 90%.
