      • Mast Cell Concentrations in Peripheral and Central Giant Cell Granulomas: Is there any Angiogenetic Role?

Farhadi, Sareh,Shahsavari, Fatemeh,Taleghani, Ferial,Komasi, Elaheh Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.2

Background: In the maxillofacial region, giant cell granulomas occur in 2 clinical forms, central and peripheral. Despite histopathological similarity between these 2 forms totally different clinical behaviors have been reported. The present study was undertaken to compare mast cell and vascular concentrations in these pathologic lesions. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 20 pathological samples of central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) and 20 samples of peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) were selected and examined through toluidine blue staining for mast cell assessment and immunohistochemical staining by VEGEF antibody for comparing the number of mast cells. T-test, chi-squared test and backward multivariate linear regression were used for statistical analysis using SPSS 20. Statistical significance was set at P<0.05. Results: This study showed significantly greater VEGF expression and mast cell concentrations in CGCG compared to PGCG cases. Also there was a significant correlation between VEGF expression and the concentration of mast cells. No relation was found between age, sex and site of the lesion and concentration of mast cells or VEGF expression. Conclusions: It is feasible that higher concentrations of mast cells in CGCG versus PGCG samples might lead to more aggressive clinical behavior via vascular proliferation and angiogenesis. However, other biologic mechanisms should be considered in this situation.

Highly Selective Triiodide Polymeric Membrane Electrode Based on Tetra(p-chlorophenyl)porphyrinato Manganese (Ⅲ) Acetate

Farhadi, Khalil,Shaikhlouei, Hossain,Maleki, Ramin,Sharghi, Hashem,Shamsipur, Mojtaba Korean Chemical Society 2002 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.23 No.11

A new solvent polymeric membrane sensor based on tetra(p-chlorophenyl)porphyrinato manganese (III) acetate is described which demonstrates excellent selectivity toward the triiodide ion. The electrode has a linear dynamic range between 1.0 ${\times}$ $10^{-2}$ M and 7.0 ${\times}$$10^{-6}$M with a Nernstian slope of $-59.6{\pm}1$ mV per decade and a detection limit of 5.0 ${\times}$$10^{-6}$M. The proposed sensor revealed good selectivities for triiodide over a wide variety of other anions and could be used in a pH range 2-9. The electrode can be used for at least two months without any considerable divergence in potential. It was applied as indicator electrode in potentiometric titration of the triiodide and As(III) ions.

Connecting Our Gut Feeling and How Our Gut Feels: The Role of Well-being Attributes in Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Ashkan Farhadi,Dwaine Banton,Laurie Keefer 대한소화기 기능성질환∙운동학회 2018 Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (JNM Vol.24 No.2

Background/Aims There is a close relationship between the mind and gut in the pathogenesis of functional bowel disorders. Common psychological disturbances such as depression and anxiety are not uncommon in those with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). There is little research investigating the role of positive psychology and gastrointestinal (GI) conditions. In this pilot study we investigated the well-being attributes in those with and without IBS. Methods We used an anonymous online survey and recruited 416 study subjects using social media as the main method of recruitment. We gathered demographic information, GI symptoms, history of mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, assessed several well-being attributes, and finally assessed subjective well-being. We hypothesized that those with GI symptoms and IBS have lower scores in their well-being attributes compared to healthy controls. Results We observed that a history of anxiety and depression is significantly associated with GI symptoms and IBS. In addition, sense of subjective well-being and several well-being attributes are negatively associated with GI symptoms and/or IBS. Of interest, the household income showed a negative correlation with the prevalence of GI symptoms and IBS. Conclusions Subjective well-being, and several well-being attributes that contribute to the sense of overall contentment, are negatively associated with GI symptoms and IBS. The link between subjective well-being, and GI symptoms and IBS are independent of anxiety and depression. Well-being attributes and sense of subjective well-being may be a contributory factor in clinical expression of GI symptoms or IBS consistent with the biopsychosocial model of the disease.

Springback Investigation of a Thick-Walled Tube Under Combined Torsion-Bending and Internal Pressure by Using Continuum Damage Mechanics

Afshin Farhadi,Amir Hosseini-Hooshyar,Ali Nayebi 한국정밀공학회 2023 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.24 No.6

The choice of material behavior models, as well as the forming procedures such as loadings and their sequences are essential in plastic flow and springback. In this study, the combined torsion and bending of a thick-walled tube under an internal pressure is simulated to predict bending and torsion springback. Continuum Damage Mechanics and the nonlinear kinematic hardening models are assumed and a numerical tool is developed to predict the springback analytically. The numerical model is verified by comparing the experimental results of simultaneous bending and torsion of a pure aluminum tube conducted by Wu et al. (Int J Mech Sci 131–132:191–204, 2017) with the numerical results. The experimental results of Sorour et al. (Thin-Walled Struct 144:106336, 2019), which studied the bending of a tube with internal pads, are also modelled with the present numerical model. The effects of loading sequences on the springback are also investigated.

Constructing novel chimeric DNA vaccine against Salmonella enterica based on SopB and GroEL proteins: an in silico approach

Tayebeh Farhadi,Seyed MohammadReza Hashemian 한국약제학회 2018 Journal of Pharmaceutical Investigation Vol.48 No.6

Salmonella enterica is an important enteric pathogen that causes intestinal and systemic infections in warm-blooded animals. Due to different problems caused by administration of live attenuated vaccines, a DNA vaccine that is protective against S. enterica is desirable. By combining conserved antigenic determinant into a single vaccine, cross-protective immunity against many different immunogenic serovars can be achieved. This study proposed an in silico approach by assembling antigenic and conserved regions of SopB and GroEL proteins of S. enterica to induce multi-epitopic responses against the pathogen. In total, two unique and reliable antigenic regions of each protein were found and assembled in a chimeric DNA construct fused using appropriate linkers. Epitope predictions showed that the hypothetical synthetic construct could induce B and T-cell epitopes that yield a high immune response. Most regions of the chimeric construct were predicted to have high antigenic propensity and surface accessibility. The three-dimensional structure of the construct was generated and validated as a proper model which may define reliability, structural quality and conformation. DNA vaccine could cause concentration and increasing immune responses to critical epitopes and decrease adverse effects of vaccination. Successful in silico modeling has shown to be a promising approach to design robust vaccine targeting SopB and GroEL proteins of S. enterica.

The Impact of Portfolio Assessment on Learners’ Achievement

        Hossein Farhady,Gayane Manukyan 한국영어평가학회 2010 영어평가 Vol.4 No.1

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the extent to which portfolio assessment may influence learners’ achievement, their learning process, and their attitude towards assessment for learning English. From the two groups involved in the study, the focus group received portfolio assessment whereas the comparison group received placebo. The instruments used were: 1) pre and post instruction tests, 2) pre and post instruction attitudinal questionnaires for students, 3) self-assessment checklists, 4) questionnaire on portfolio assessment-and 5) semi-structured interview with students on portfolio assessment. The pre and post instruction test data was analyzed through non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test, which showed a significant difference between the comparison and the focus groups. In order to see the relationship between self-assessment checklist scores and the progress test scores, Spearman’s rank order correlation showed high correlation between the two sets of scores. Cross-case analysis of the content of the interview data was performed after categorizing the questions into “attitude” and “learning” items. Each category was analyzed separately in order to group the most common answers. The results of the questionnaires and interviews showed that portfolio assessment had positive effect on students’ achievement. The students reported that the process of portfolio assessment enabled them to be actively involved in the learning process.

Coordinated Cognitive Tethering in Dense Wireless Areas

        Haleh Tabrizi,Golnaz Farhadi,John Cioffi,Ghadah Aldabbagh 한국전자통신연구원 2016 ETRI Journal Vol.38 No.2

This paper examines the resource gain that can be obtained from the creation of clusters of nodes in densely populated areas. A single node within each such cluster is designated as a “hotspot”; all other nodes then communicate with a destination node, such as a base station, through such hotspots. We propose a semi-distributed algorithm, referred to as coordinated cognitive tethering (CCT), which clusters all nodes and coordinates hotspots to tether over locally available white spaces. CCT performs the following these steps: (a) groups nodes based on a modified k-means clustering algorithm; (b) assigns white-space spectrum to each cluster based on a distributed graph-coloring approach to maximize spectrum reuse, and (c) allocates physical-layer resources to individual users based on local channel information. Unlike small cells (for example, femtocells and WiFi), this approach does not require any additions to existing infrastructure. In addition to providing parallel service to more users than conventional direct communication in cellular networks, simulation results show that CCT can increase the average battery life of devices by 30%, on average.

Spatial justice in relation to the urban amenities distribution in Austin, Texas

        Fatema Hussaini,Ebrahim Farhadi,Ahmad Pourahmad,Simona Tondelli 대한공간정보학회 2023 Spatial Information Research Vol.31 No.1

In addition to enhancing our theoretical grasp of justice, thinking spatially about it can also reveal important new insights that broaden our practical understanding in order to advance justice and democracy. On the other hand, these opportunities won’t be as obvious if the spatial equities aren’t made apparent and strong. Austin city has experienced a fast-urban growing in the past decades. As urban areas grow, the public facilities should increase. The purpose of this paper investigates Facilities in terms of public facilities. Even though we said that the concept of justice is very complex, it is possible to get an understanding of it by using a quantitative method. This paper explores the condition of urban justice and opportunities for accessibility to public facilities for all residents in Austin by using GIS data and the Fuzzy logic model. The facilities and services maps were made in GIS and after the Euclidean Distance and Reclassify function in Arc Map, the Fuzzy Logic model was used to analyze spatial justice. The result shows the facilities are distributed properly. Spatial justice is in the context of Austin and residents enjoy spatial justice.
