Evaluation of sweet cherry fruit quality after short-term storage in relation to the rootstock

Ewa Dziedzic,Jan Błaszczyk 한국원예학회 2019 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.60 No.6

Fruits of the sweet cherry cultivar ‘Regina’ collected from trees growing on seven rootstocks were stored in a cold room at 2 °C with a normal (NA) and controlled atmosphere (15% and 20% CO2 and 5% O2—CA1 and CA2) for 2 weeks. The rootstocks on which the trees grew and the storage conditions significantly affected all fruit parameters tested during both years of the experiment. Fruit from Damil rootstock exhibited higher mean firmness than fruit from Colt rootstock. The effect of rootstocks on the value of soluble solids content (SSC) varied, wherein the fruits from Tabel Edabriz and Damil were characterized by high SSC mean content. The organic acids content (TA) was significantly lower after storage than during harvest time. Fruits from Tabel Edabriz trees were characterized by faster ripening, as was evident by the higher SSC to TA ratio. The amount of mass lost depended significantly and only on the storage conditions—sweet cherries from both CA combinations had the lowest mass losses. The percentage of fruits showing disease symptoms was largely dependent on the weather conditions in the orchard the year before the fruit harvest, as well as atmosphere composition and RH during fruit storage. Cold storage conditions with a high (20%) CO2 content are recommended for the short-term storage of sweet cherry fruits because they preserve fruit quality parameters: a low decrease in firmness, maintenance of a high SSC/TA ratio, a low percent of fungal infections, and good preservation of green color in the peduncle.

Biological features of fl owers infl uence the fertility of Lonicera spp. Cultivars

        Monika Bieniasz,Ewa Dziedzic,Gerard Słowik 한국원예학회 2019 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.60 No.2

Fertility experiments were carried out on a plantation of haskap berries (40 cultivars) in southern Poland. Based on theobservation of phenological phases, the cultivars were divided into three groups with similar overlapping periods of fullfl owering: the earliest comprising 11 cultivars; the moderate-early, 17 cultivars; and the latest, 7 cultivars. The attractivenessof cultivars for pollinating insects was evaluated on the basis of fl ower biometric measurements. Flowers are more diversein length than in width of the sympetalous corolla, with the pistil always being longer than the corolla, which is conduciveto eff ective insect pollination. A pollen viability coloring test and germination capacity on agar medium were used to assesspollen quality. Despite very high pollen viability (on average, 90%), the percentage of germinating pollen was very low andranged from 3.3 to 34.5%. Pollen yields for each cultivar were calculated based on the number of pollen grains in the fl owers. The cultivars diff ered signifi cantly in terms of the number of pollen grains in the fl owers. The cultivar “Morena” wascharacterized by the highest number of pollen grains (45,375), while the cultivar “Fialka” had the lowest (2750). Microscopicobservations of pollen tube overgrowth through the style of the pistil after open pollination and self-pollination allowedfor calculation of the pollen germination index (PGI) used to assess the fertility of the cultivars. Self-pollinated cultivarswith a PGI < 2 were characterized by self-incompatibility. It was found that among the 40 cultivars studied, only the “DoczVelikana” cultivar exhibited PGI > 2, which proves the self-fertility tendency of this cultivar.
