Vol.31 No.4

The purpose of this study is to understand the experiences and cultural identity development of elementary returnee students in order to enhance the effectiveness of general and English education in public elementary schools. This case study covers four students who had previously lived abroad. Each student participated in an individual interview as well as two group interviews about their experiences abroad and subsequent return. The interview transcript was focus-analyzed with the developmental frame of cultural adaptation (Kim, 2015) and cultural identity. As a result, every student went through the cultural adaptation developmental level of awareness-acceptance-integration. While students’ bilingual identity(Choe, 2010) seemed to remain balanced positively, their cultural identity development(Banks, 2015) shifted based on social context or conversational issue. The resulting information suggests that we should view these students’ experiences within the frame of cultural adaptation and cultural identity development in order to support students and enhance community competence. It also highlights the importance of motivating students of language learning constantly, and designing and practicing English curriculum with cultural elements. This study provided a further understanding of returnees in elementary school and an effective education approach for them.

Special Review : Multi-facets of Corticotropin-releasing Factor in Modulating Inflammation and Angiogenesis

( Eunok Im ) 대한소화기기능성질환·운동학회(구 대한소화관운동학회) 2015 Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (JNM Vol.21 No.1

The family of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) composed of 4 ligands including CRF, urocortin (Ucn) 1, Ucn2, and Ucn3 is expressed both in the central nervous system and the periphery including the gastrointestinal tract. Two different forms of G protein coupled receptors, CRF1 and CRF2, differentially recognize CRF family members, mediating various biological functions. A large body of evidence suggests that the CRF family plays an important role in regulating inflammation and angiogenesis. Of particular interest is a contrasting role of the CRF family during inflammatory processes. The CRF family can exert both proand anti-inflammatory functions depending on the type of receptors, the tissues, and the disease phases. In addition, there has been a growing interest in a possible role of the CRF family in angiogenesis. Regulation of angiogenesis by the CRF family has been shown to modulate endogenous blood vessel formation, inflammatory neovascularization and cardiovascular function. This review outlines the effect of the CRF family and its receptors on 2 major biological events: inflammation and angiogenesis, and provides a possibility of their application for the treatment of inflammatory vascular diseases.

      • What is optimal cardiopulmonary resuscitation technique for children?

Vol.6 No.1

We present optimal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) technique based on body weight using optimal control theory. The validated blood circulation model of CPR has been modified for various body weights by the scaling law. The external chest and abdomen pressures are chosen as controls and the goal is to maximize the mean systemic perfusion pressure (SPP). The numerical results show that four phases CPR method, such as Lifestick CPR, gives the optimal CPR technique. The most interesting result is that more weighted person needs longer compression duration on the abdomen and less weighted person, like children, needs longer compression duration on the chest.

Awareness Patterns Regarding Radiation Safety Management in Fields Related to Radiation Safety Regulations: Focusing on Companies that Must Report Radiation Sources

Vol.49 No.1

Background: This study aims to analyze radiation safety management and regulatory perceptions, focusing on companies that must report radiation sources. The intent is to reduce the gap between regulation measures and addressing real concerns while improving practical safety management measures and regulations for all stakeholders. Materials and Methods: Radiation safety officers at a total of 244 reporting companies using radiation generators (79.8%) and sealed radioisotopes (15.1%) were surveyed using a questionnaire. Results and Discussion: The perception that regulation is stronger than the actual risk of the radiation source used was 3.47 points (out of 5 points), indicating a score above average. The most important factors and considerations were education and training (48%) as a human factor, safety devices of the radiation source (71.3%) as a hazardous material factor, the use of radiation (50.8%) as an organizational environment, and the radiation effect of nearby facilities (67.2%) as a physical environment. Radiation safety management educational experience (F=5.030, p<0.01), the group with high subjective knowledge (t=6.017, p<0.001), and the group with high objective knowledge (t=1.989, p<0.05) was found to be better at radiation safety management. Conclusion: It is necessary to standardize the educational experience regarding radiation safety management because each staff member has individual differences in educational experience. It is necessary to provide more information on how to solve radiation accidents via educational content. Applying radiation safety regulations based on the factors that significantly affect radiation safety management shown in this survey will help improve safety.

FOCUSED REVIEWS: GUT AND BASIC RESEARCH : Corticotropin-releasing Hormone and Its Biological Diversity toward Angiogenesis

2014 Intestinal Research Vol.12 No.2

Angiogenesis is the formation of new blood vessels from existing ones and an underlying cause of numerous human diseases, including cancer and inflammation. A large body of evidence indicates that angiogenic inhibitors have therapeutic potential inthe treatment of vascular diseases. However, detrimental side effects and low efficacy hinder their use in clinical practice. Membersof the corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) family, which comprises CRH, urocortin I-III, and CRH receptors (CRHR)1 and 2, are broadly expressed in the brain and peripheral tissues, including the intestine and cardiovascular system. The CRHfamily regulates stress-related responses through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Therapeutic agents that target CRHfamily members offer a new approach to the treatment of various gastrointestinal disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome(IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and colorectal cancer. Since the discovery that CRHR 2 has anti-angiogenic activityduring postnatal development in mice, studies have focused on the role of the CRH system in the modulation of blood vesselformation and cardiovascular function. This review will outline the basic biological functions of the CRH family members andthe implications for the development of novel anti-angiogenic therapies. (Intest Res 2014;12:96-102)

      • Optimal treatment strategies of Tuberculosis in South Korea

Vol.5 No.1

We have developed a tuberculosis (TB) model in South Korea using the SEIR model with the time-dependent parameters. South Korea ranked the highest TB incidence among members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in 2004. The observed data from the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) shows a certain rise of the incidence people after 2001 yr because of increasing foreign workers with active-TB and starting the operation of the Korean Tuberculosis Surveillance System. The least-square curve fitting has been used for fitting the parameters in our model to the observed data. In this work, we also propose the optimal treatment strategies of TB model in South Korea using optimal control theory based on our TB model from 2001 yr to 2008 yr.
