The Return of an Old Worm: Cerebral Paragonimiasis Presenting with Intracerebral Hemorrhage

<P>Paragonimiasis is caused by ingesting crustaceans, which are the intermediate hosts of <I>Paragonimus</I>. The involvement of the brain was a common presentation in Korea decades ago, but it becomes much less frequent in domestic medical practices. We observed a rare case of cerebral paragonimiasis manifesting with intracerebral hemorrhage. A 10-yr-old girl presented with sudden-onset dysarthria, right facial palsy and clumsiness of the right hand. Brain imaging showed acute intracerebral hemorrhage in the left frontal area. An occult vascular malformation or small arteriovenous malformation compressed by the hematoma was initially suspected. The lesion progressed for over 2 months until a delayed surgery was undertaken. Pathologic examination was consistent with cerebral paragonimiasis. After chemotherapy with praziquantel, the patient was monitored without neurological deficits or seizure attacks for 6 months. This case alerts practicing clinicians to the domestic transmission of a forgotten parasitic disease due to environmental changes.</P>
Mixed germ cell tumor of the midbrain

<P>This 14-year-old boy presented with left hemiparesis, gait disturbance, and multiple cranial nerve palsies. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a multicystic mass with hemorrhagic fluid-fluid levels in the right midbrain, suggesting the presence of a cavernous malformation. Diffusion tensor imaging showed the mass to be close to the right corticospinal tract and ipsilateral medial lemniscus. Subtotal removal of the mass was performed via a right subtemporal approach. The histopathological diagnosis was of a mixed germ cell tumor (GCT) comprising mature teratoma and germinoma cells with syncytiotrophoblastic giant cells. The patient underwent postoperative chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and no tumor progression was found during 1 year of follow-up.</P><P>Intracranial GCTs arise mainly in the pineal and the suprasellar area. Germ cell tumors in the brainstem are rare, with only 12 reported cases. Among these, 4 were in the midbrain and histologically were pure germinomas. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of a mixed GCT in the midbrain combining mature teratoma and germinoma cells.</P>

<P>A surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor comprising silver nanowires (AgNWs) and genetically engineered M13 bacteriophages expressing a tryptophan-histidine-tryptophan (WHW) peptide sequence (BPWHW) was fabricated by simple mixing of BPWHW and AgNW solutions, followed by vacuum filtration onto a glass-fiber filter paper (GFFP) membrane. The AgNWs stacked on the GFFP formed a high density of SERS-active hot spots at the points of nanowire intersections, and the surface-coated BPWHW functioned as a bioreceptor for selective pesticide detection. The BPWHW-functionalized AgNW (BPWHW/AgNW) sensor was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, confocal scanning fluorescence microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The Raman signal enhancement and the selective pesticide SERS detection properties of the BPWHW/AgNW sensor were investigated in the presence of control substrates such as wild-type M13 bacteriophage-decorated AgNWs (BPWT/AgNW) and undecorated AgNWs (AgNW). The BPWHW/AgNW sensor exhibited a significantly higher capture capability for pesticides, especially paraquat (PQ), than the control SERS substrates, and it also showed a relatively higher selectivity for PQ than for other bipyridylium pesticides such as diquat and difenzoquat. Furthermore, as a field application test, PQ was detected on the surface of PQ-pretreated apple peels, and the results demonstrated the feasibility of using a paper-based SERS substrate for on-site residual pesticide detection. The developed M13 bacteriophage-functionalized AgNW SERS sensor might be applicable for the detection of various pesticides and chemicals through modification of the M13 bacteriophage surface peptide sequence.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

We examined the comparative spawning ecology of daggertooth pike conger Mureanesox cinereus and common pike conger M. bagio in the South Sea of Korea from May 2018 to December 2019. In the South Sea of Korea, the mean total length (TL) of M. cinereus was significantly smaller than that of M. bagio. The sex ratios of both species were skewed toward females. The spawning period of M. cinereus was from June to October, while the spawning period of M. bagio was from August to October. The lengths at 50%, 75%, and 97.5% sexual maturity of M. cinereus females were estimated as 54.6 cm, 60.4 cm, and 74.1 cm TL, respectively. It was not possible to estimate lengths at sexual maturity for M. bagio in the South Sea of Korea due to the absence of immature stages.

The study aims at analyzing a species composition of the fish live in bottom of the coastal waters off Sejon island, Korea. To reach the goal of the study, a species composition and it``s seasonally fluctuation, a seasonally fluctuation of the dominant species and it``s appearance type were analyzed with the fishes caught by the bottom trawl in the coastal waters off Sejon island from May, 2011 to March, 2012. The results obtained can be summarized as follows; Fish caught in this area composes 10 orders, 25 families, and 37 species. The most dominant species in an number of fish was Pennahia argentata which was occupied at 42.1% from the whole number, the second most dominant species was Konosirus punctatus which was occupied at 14.2%. The most dominant species in a biomass of fish was Pennahia argentata which was 31.3% out of the whole catch, the next dominant species was Lophius litulonwhich which was 18.2%. The first group (Trichiurus lepturus, Zeus faber, Pennahia argentata, Chelidonichthys spinosus and Lophius litulon) was appeared at May, August, October, the second group (Sphyraena pinguis) was appeared at May and November, the third group (Pampus argenteus) was appeared at August, the fourth group (Pampus echinogaster, Leiognathus nuchalis, Konosirus punctatus and Engraulis japonicus) was appeared at March.
경제적 불안정이 자살생각 경험에 미치는 영향: 중·노년기 장애인과 비장애인의 비교를 중심으로

본 연구는 경제적 소득 수준과 더불어, 중년기와 노년기의 경제적 불안정이 장애인과 비장애인의 자살생각에 미치는 영향을 비교 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위해, 한국복지패널 7차부터 14차까지의 8개년도 자료를 활용해 일반화 선형혼합 로지스틱 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 분석 결과, 비장애인에 비해 장애인의 자살생각 경험률이 더 높았고, 경제적 불안정이 중년기와 노년기 자살생각에 미치는 영향은 장애인과 비장애인에서 다르게 나타났다. 장애인의 경우, 경제적 불안정 각 요인의 독립적인 영향이 확인되었으나, 요인들을 하나의 모형에 포함한 결과 유의한 영향은 사라졌다. 비장애인의 경우, 소득수준이 증가할수록 자살생각이 감소하는 가운데, 소득 변동이 노년기 비장애인의 자살생각 증가에 유의한 영향을 주었고, 경제적 갈등 경험은 비장애인의 자살생각 증가에 유의한 영향을 주었다. 본 연구결과는 장애인과 비장애인의 정신건강 향상을 위해 경제적 수준뿐 아니라 경제적 불안정을 함께 고려해야 함을 시사한다. This study aims to compare the effects of economic insecurity on suicidal thoughts in middle-aged and older adults with and without disabilities. In this study, we analyzed the data from Korea Welfare Panel 7th-14th wave surveys. A generalized linear mixed logistic regression was conducted to examine the relationship considering repeated measurements. The results show that people with disabilities had a higher risk of suicidal thoughts than those without disabilities. The effect of economic insecurity on suicidal thoughts differed between those with and without disabilities. Specifically, there was an independent effect of each factor of economic insecurity; but there was no significant effect in the overall model of factors of economic insecurity among people with disabilities. Suicidal thoughts were likely to increase as the overall income level decreased, income volatility (year-on-year income changes) and family economic hardships were associated with higher risk for suicidal thoughts in people without disabilities. The results suggest that not only the level of economic status but also economic insecurity should be considered in order to improve the mental health of people with and without disabilities.
