dbsViewer: A Tool for Visualizing Storage Space and I/O Usage for Oracle DBMS

Database Administrators(DBAs) rely on existing database administration tools in performing their various tasks. However, most of these tools often include vast functionalities which make them complex to use especially by beginner DBAs. Coupled with this is the expert in-depth knowledge and experience with the Database Management System(DBMSs) which the tools support required to effectively leverage most of their functionalities. Accordingly, most of these tools are well suited for use by highly skilled and experienced DBAs. This work describes dbsViewer; a tool tailored to the needs of beginner DBAs that supports their space management and I/O tuning tasks. dbsViewer visualizes space and I/O usage information to enhance its quick and easy assimilation. Acting on this understanding, the DBA is able to carefully plan storage capacity in order to guarantee continuous database growth and availability. Moreover, he is able to easily identify and efficiently spend I/O tuning efforts on objects that incur the most I/O so as to ensure optimal database I/O performance. dbsViewer’s effectiveness in providing space and I/O usage information relevant to the space management and I/O tuning tasks of DBAs is shown through test experiments.
