Using Autonomous Robots to Enable Self-organizing Broadband Networks
Eric T. Matson,Benny Leong,Cory Q. Nguyen,Anthony Smith,Juan P. Wachs 제어로봇시스템학회 2010 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2010 No.10
Broadband is a ubiquitous technology for connecting people together via a basic communications medium. Incorporating mobility into broadband antennas provides for the creation of movable nodes which can seek out other nodes. In contrast, stationary broadband nodes are incapable of finding new nodes if they are out of range or have an impediment. Supplying a broadband node with mobility and the capability to adapt to its environment, as well as, to other broadband nodes, is the central aim of this effort. This research enables self-organizing mobile broadband networks with the integration of broadband radios, autonomous robotic platforms and multiagent organizations. The broadband network acts as an infrastructure for external users and connects all robotic instances. The integration of these technologies furthers the ability to communicate where mobility and adaptation are critical.
Immunomodulatory properties of stem cells and bioactive molecules for tissue engineering
Molina, Eric R.,Smith, Brandon T.,Shah, Sarita R.,Shin, Heungsoo,Mikos, Antonios G. Elsevier 2015 Journal of controlled release Vol.219 No.-

Abstract

The immune system plays a crucial role in the success of tissue engineering strategies. Failure to consider the interactions between implantable scaffolds, usually containing cells and/or bioactive molecules, and the immune system can result in rejection of the implant and devastating clinical consequences. However, recent research into mesenchymal stem cells, which are commonly used in many tissue engineering applications, indicates that they may play a beneficial role modulating the immune system. Likewise, direct delivery of bioactive molecules involved in the inflammatory process can promote the success of tissue engineering constructs. In this article, we will review the various mechanisms in which modulation of the immune system is achieved through delivered bioactive molecules and cells and contextualize this information for future strategies in tissue engineering.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

Differential antiangiogenic and anticancer activities of the active metabolites of ginsenoside Rg3
Maryam Nakhjavani,Eric Smith,Kenny Yeo,Yoko Tomita,Timothy J. Price,Andrea Yool,Amanda R. Townsend,Jennifer E. Hardingham The Korean Society of Ginseng 2024 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.48 No.2
Background: Epimers of ginsenoside Rg3 (Rg3) have a low bioavailability and are prone to deglycosylation, which produces epimers of ginsenoside Rh2 (S-Rh2 and R-Rh2) and protopanaxadiol (S-PPD and R-PPD). The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and potency of these molecules as anti-cancer agents. Methods: Crystal violet staining was used to study the anti-proliferatory action of the molecules on a human epithelial breast cancer cell line, MDA-MB-231, and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and compare their potency. Cell death and cell cycle were studied using flow cytometry and mode of cell death was studied using live cell imaging. Anti-angiogenic effects of the drug were studied using loop formation assay. Molecular docking showed the interaction of these molecules with vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR2) and aquaporin (AQP) water channels. VEGF bioassay was used to study the interaction of Rh2 with VEGFR2, in vitro. Results: HUVEC was the more sensitive cell line to the anti-proliferative effects of S-Rh2, S-PPD and R-PPD. The molecules induced necroptosis/necrosis in MDA-MB-231 and apoptosis in HUVEC. S-Rh2 was the most potent inhibitor of loop formation. In silico molecular docking predicted a good binding score between Rh2 or PPD and the ATP-binding pocket of VEGFR2. VEGF bioassay showed that Rh2 was an allosteric modulator of VEGFR2. In addition, SRh2 and PPD had good binding scores with AQP1 and AQP5, both of which play roles in cell migration and proliferation. Conclusion: The combination of these molecules might be responsible for the anti-cancer effects observed by Rg3.

The transradial approach (TRA) is an effective and safe alternative to transfemoral access for diagnostic neuroangiography and craniocervical interventions. While the technical aspects of supraclavicular intervention are well-described, there are little data on the TRA for thoracolumbar angiography and intervention. The authors describe the feasibility of the TRA for preoperative thoracic tumor embolization, emphasizing technique, device selection, navigation, and catheterization of thoracolumbar segmental arteries. This approach extends the benefits of TRA to spinal interventional neuroradiology.
AWARE Pulse: An Integrated Portal to the AWARE Platform
Benny Leong,Cory Q. Nguyen,Anthony H. Smith,Eric T. Matson,J. Eric Dietz 제어로봇시스템학회 2011 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2011 No.10
This paper presents the AWARE Pulse application that serves as a web portal to the AWARE platform that provides a mobile wireless network through the use of autonomous robotic agents. In particular, this paper discusses the overall application architecture including the various components within the application, the different roles of the application as well as the integration of AWARE Pulse into the existing AWARE platform.

Background: This study investigated the incidence and clinical outcomes of portal and hepatic vein thrombosis (VT) on imaging after transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS). Methods: A retrospective review of records at a single liver transplant center between 2010 and 2018 revealed 423 patients who underwent TIPS. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography and magnetic resonance images within 1 year post-TIPS were available for 138 patients and compared to assess the imaging findings of VT and liver infarction. The associations of VT with overall survival, patient characteristics, stent size, pre- and post- TIPS Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) scores, and post-TIPS hepatic encephalopathy at 90 days were analyzed. Results: The prevalence of VT on imaging within 1 year was 63.0% (n = 87). VT within the right portal vein was more common: 41 cases were in the right portal vein, 25 in the posterior portal vein, and two in the anterior right portal vein. Ten patients had VT in the left portal vein. Four had VT in the main portal vein (MPV), and one had shunt thrombosis extending into the superior mesenteric vein. Hepatic VT was seen in the right hepatic vein in 17 patients and in the middle hepatic vein in six patients. VT was associated with liver infarction (n = 9, P = 0.018). There was no relationship between VT and sex, age, cirrhosis etiology, indication for TIPS, stent size, or hepatic encephalopathy at 90 days. VT in the MPV had poorer survival (P < 0.001). Older age (P = 0.028) and higher pre-TIPS MELD score (P = 0.049) were poor prognostic factors. VT was not treated. Conclusion: Portal and hepatic VTs were common imaging findings after TIPS without worsened clinical outcomes unless VT involved the MPV. VT may cause liver infarction, but infarcts were not independently associated with poorer survival.
Three Concurrent Periprosthetic Joint Infections: A Case Report and Literature Review
Matthew Pina,Alexander D. Gaukhman,Brett Hayden,Eric L. Smith 대한고관절학회 2019 Hip and Pelvis Vol.31 No.1
Periprosthetic joint infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality following total joint arthroplasty. Two-stage arthroplasty, with the use of an antibiotic cement spacer, is an effective means of managing periperiprosthetic joint infections. There is a lack of data relating to the management, prognosis, and clinical outcomes associated with multiple peri-prosthetic joint infections. Here, we present a case report of a patient successfully treated for three synchronic peri-prosthetic joint infections of both knees and a single hip.
