Demographic and Clinical Correlates of Seizure Frequency: Findings from the Managing Epilepsy Well Network Database

        Erdong Chen,Martha Sajatovic,Hongyan Liu,Ashley Bukach,Curtis Tatsuoka,Elisabeth Welter,Samantha S. Schmidt,Yvan A. Bamps,Shelley C. Stoll,Tanya M. Spruill,Daniel Friedman,Charles E. Begley,Ross Shego 대한신경과학회 2018 Journal of Clinical Neurology Vol.14 No.2

Background and Purpose Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disease that represents a tremendousburden on both patients and society in general. Studies have addressed how demographicvariables, socioeconomic variables, and psychological comorbidity are related to thequality of life (QOL) of people with epilepsy (PWE). However, there has been less focus on howthese factors may differ between patients who exhibit varying degrees of seizure control. Thisstudy utilized data from the Managing Epilepsy Well (MEW) Network of the Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention with the aim of elucidating differences in demographic variables, depression, and QOL between adult PWE. Methods Demographic variables, depression, and QOL were compared between PWE whoexperience clinically relevant differences in seizure occurrence. Results Gender, ethnicity, race, education, income, and relationship status did not differ significantlybetween the seizure-frequency categories (p>0.05). People with worse seizure controlwere significantly younger (p=0.039), more depressed (as assessed using the Patient HealthQuestionnaire) (p=0.036), and had lower QOL (as determined using the 10-item Quality of Lifein Epilepsy for Adults scale) (p<0.001). Conclusions The present results underscore the importance of early screening, detection, andtreatment of depression, since these factors relate to both seizure occurrence and QOL in PWE.

Mild purification of multiwalled carbon nanotubes with increased selectivity for carbon impurity and residual metal removal

        Chen Erdong,Liu Qiang,Wu Pan,He Jian,Liu Changjun,Jiang Wei 한국탄소학회 2024 Carbon Letters Vol.34 No.1

In this study, the refinement of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) derived from chemical vapor decomposition is investigated. An ultrasonic pretreatment method is employed to disentangle carbon and metal impurities intertwined with MWCNTs. The pretreated MWCNTs exhibit a marginal decrease in C–O/C = O content from 8.9 to 8.8%, accompanied by a 2.5% increase in sp3 carbon content, indicating a mildly destructive pretreatment approach. Subsequently, selective oxidation by CO2 and hydrochloric acid etching are utilized to selectively remove carbon impurities and residual metal, respectively. The resulting yield of intact MWCNTs is approximately 85.65 wt.%, signifying a 19.91% enhancement in the one-way yield of pristine MWCNTs. Notably, the residual metal content experiences a substantial reduction from 9.95 ± 2.42 wt.% to 1.34 ± 0.06 wt.%, representing a 15.68% increase in the removal rate. These compelling findings highlight the potential of employing a mild purification process for MWCNTs production, demonstrating promising application prospects.

Correlation Between the Microstructural Defects and Residual Stress in a Single Crystal Nickel-Based Superalloy During Different Creep Stages

        Fangjie Mo,Erdong Wu,Changsheng Zhang,Hong Wang,Zhengye Zhong,Jian Zhang,Bo Chen,Michael Hofmann,Weimin Gan,Guangai Sun 대한금속·재료학회 2018 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.24 No.5

The present work attempts to reveal the correlation between the microstructural defects and residual stress in the singlecrystal nickel-based superalloy, both of which play the signifi cant role on properties and performance. Neutron diff ractionwas employed to investigate the microstructural defects and residual stresses in a single crystal (SC) nickel-based superalloy, which was subjected to creeping under 220 MPa and 1000 °C for different times. The measured superlattice andfundamental lattice refl ections confi rm that the mismatch and tetragonal distortions with c / a > 1 exist in the SC superalloy. At the initially unstrained state, there exists the angular distortion between γ and γ’ phases with small triaxial compressivestresses, ensuring the structural stability of the superalloy. After creeping, the tetragonal distortion for the γ phase is largerthan that for the γ’ phase. With increasing the creeping time, the mismatch between γ and γ’ phases increases to the maximum, then decreases gradually and fi nally remains unchanged. The macroscopic residual stress shows a similar behaviorwith the mismatch, indicating the correlation between them. Based on the model of shear and dislocations, the evolution ofmicrostructural defects and residual stress are reasonably explained. The effect of shear is dominant at the primary creepstage, which greatly enlarges the mismatch and the residual stress. The dislocations weaken the effect of shear for the furthercreep stage, resulting in the decrease of the mismatch and relaxation of the residual stress. Those fi ndings add some helpfulunderstanding into the microstructure-performance relationship in the SC nickel-based superalloy, which might provide theinsight to materials design and applications.
