Vol.0 No.3

This article links together two conflicting approaches within the European and US-American academic discipline of history: New Global History and Subaltern Studies. New Global History aims to overcome Eurocentrism by focusing on the history of “Spaceship Earth” (Bruce Mazlish) instead of national histories. By confronting this suggestion with the criticism of the Subaltern Studies Group? mainly from Dipesh Chakrabarty and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak?the article shows the profound but hidden influence of Western historical thinking on New Global History. It becomes obvious that New Global History has not succeeded in overcoming Eurocentrism due to its concentration on anonymous global structures and its failure to include individual experiences. The Subaltern Studies’ approach to history, on the other hand, fails to grasp global structures. The article concludes with a plea for a “global history from below”. This global history from below ties in with the challenge of Subaltern Studies and applies their criticism to global history. What historians have to do is show how the local is formed globally and, at the same time, how the global is put together locally. The article assumes that this is only possible when the historian discloses the “centrism” of his or her narration by making it explicit?be it a “centrism” focusing on Europe, Asia, or whatever region in the world.

Determination of N* amplitudes from associated strangeness production in p+p collisions

        ,nzer, R.,Fabbietti, L.,Epple, E.,Lu, S.,Klose, P.,Hauenstein, F.,Herrmann, N.,Grzonka, D.,Leifels, Y.,Maggiora, M.,Pleiner, D.,Ramstein, B.,Ritman, J.,Roderburg, E.,Salabura, P.,Sarantsev, A.,B North-Holland Pub. Co 2018 Physics letters. Section B Vol.785 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We present the first determination of the energy-dependent amplitudes of N⁎ resonances extracted from their decay in KΛ pairs in p+p → pK + Λ reactions. A combined Partial Wave Analysis of seven data samples with exclusively reconstructed p+p → pK + Λ events measured by the COSY-TOF, DISTO, FOPI and HADES Collaborations in fixed target experiments at kinetic energies between 2.14 to 3.5 GeV is used to determine the amplitude of the resonant and non-resonant contributions into the associated strangeness final state. The contribution of seven N⁎ resonances with masses between 1650 MeV/c2 and 1900 MeV/c2 for an excess energy between 0 and 600 MeV has been considered. The Σ–p cusp and final state interactions for the p–Λ channel are also included as coherent contributions in the PWA. The N⁎ contribution is found to be dominant with respect to the phase space emission of the pK Λ + final state at all energies demonstrating the important role played by both N⁎ and interference effects in hadron–hadron collisions.</P>

      • Modeling and investigation start-up procedures of a combined cycle power plant

        Alobaid, F.,Postler, R.,Strohle, J.,Epple, B.,Kim, H.G. Applied Science Publishers 2008 APPLIED ENERGY Vol.85 No.12

This study describes the particular development and investigation of a static and dynamic simulation model and its application to improve the start-up process of a combined cycle power plant. Generally, the power plant system and control design mean highly complex interactivities. The dynamic simulation models using powerful computers are effective tools for studying and understanding the operating characteristics of power plants to meet and improve the design, control strategy and operational requirements. The heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) is modeled by using commercial simulation software named advanced process simulation software (APROS). The HRSG model includes an advanced control philosophy and turbine bypass systems to have a high level of accuracy, especially during hard transients. The comparison between the simulation results and measured data is documented. The received results proved and embodied that the simulation is both very reliable to estimate the real HRSG dynamic behaviour and capable to predict the operational processes. Through a parametric study, the start-up time will be reduced while keeping the life-time consumption of critically stressed components under control.
