New Directions in Second Language Socialization Research

This paper provides an overview of second language (L2) socialization research, some examples of recent studies addressing this topic, and finally a theoretical reconceptualization of L2 socialization. The three studies to be presented include secondary schools in an English-as-a-foreign-language context in Central Europe, mainstream classes in an English-as-a second-language school in Western Canada, and programs for English language and nursing skills for immigrant Canadians. This empirical, qualitative research does not support a linear, deterministic view of L2 socialization; such a view assumes, erroneously, that students or other novices are fully willing and able to adopt stable, monolingual, local target L2 norms and that members of the target culture are both competent and receptive to the newcomers. Some consequences and implications of these findings are discussed.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a complex chronic condition that causes a large health burden on both individuals and on the health care system. Those living with this condition have been found to use significant amounts of health care services, particularly costly acute care services. The exploration of health service use and overall self-reported health is warranted. The objectives of the study were: 1) to describe self-reported health and other health-related variables among those living with (COPD) and 2) to determine the association between self-reported health and health services used by those living with COPD. An analysis of the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) 2017-2018 was undertaken to examine the impact of COPD on self-rated health and health service use. Chi square, logistic regression, and poison regression were used. Persons living with COPD are more likely to report poorer self-rated health (OR = 4.96, CI = 4.67-5.27) and mental health (OR =2.54, CI = 2.36-2.72). Those with COPD were not more likely to report accessing health care providers beyond primary health care than those without COPD. COPD is associated with poorer self-rated health and mental health compared to those not living with COPD. Persons living with COPD were less likely to report accessing health care service from those beyond their primary care provider
Malignant Melanoma Arising in Red Tattoo Ink

We report the case of a 33-year-old male who presented with a malignant melanoma on his anterior chest wall. The lesion was only found in the red ink pigment of the tattoo, as were several in-transit dermal metastases. Possible explanations include a pre-existing lesion which was seeded with red ink or the possibility of the red ink causing an inflammatory reaction leading to malignant transformation. This is the first reported case of a melanoma developing in the red ink pigment of a multi-colored tattoo.

Multi-functional transparent electrode for reliable flexible perovskite solar cells

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Multilayer MoO<SUB>x</SUB>/Ag/MoO<SUB>x</SUB> (DMD) films are found to be transparent conducting electrodes for use in extremely stable and highly bendable flexible perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The optical transparency and electric properties of DMD and its role as a top electrode of PSCs were studied by changing the thickness of the MoO<SUB>x</SUB> layer. Although the MoO<SUB>x</SUB> thickness was shown to have a negligible effect on the sheet resistance of DMD, the transmittance of visible light, selective carrier transport capability, and long-term stability of a device considerably depend on this factor. The sandwich structure of a 20-nm-thick MoO<SUB>x</SUB>, 7-nm-thick Ag, and 20-nm-thick MoO<SUB>x</SUB> exhibits a high transmittance and large photon–electron conversion rate of PSCs. In addition, PSCs using the DMD top electrode maintain 92% of their initial current density after 24 h of continuous operation owing to a UV light cut-off of the top illumination. Moreover, the overall structure of DMD blocks the diffusion of water and oxygen molecules from real environmental conditions. At the same time, the underlying/upper MoO<SUB>x</SUB> layer retards the degradation through a chemical reaction between Ag and the halide ions inside the cells, as well as foreign ions from outside the polluted atmosphere. When DMD is applied to flexible PSCs on Ti foil, the PCE reaches 14.5%, and mechanical integrity of the PSCs is maintained at a bending radius of 4 mm.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> MoO<SUB>x</SUB>/Ag/MoO<SUB>x</SUB> multilayer is used as a top electrode of perovskite solar cells. </LI> <LI> The multilayer electrode has multiple functions in real operation environment. </LI> <LI> 92% of the initial current density is maintained after 24 h continuous operation. </LI> <LI> The efficiency of flexible solar cells using MoO<SUB>x</SUB>/Ag/MoO<SUB>x</SUB> reaches 14.5%. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Aβ^1-40 is a potential peptide radiopharmaceuticalthat coilid be used to image the brain Aβ amyloid of Alaheimerdisease in vivo, should this peptide be made transportablethrough the blood-brain barier in vivo. The blood-brain barriertransport of[^125I]-Aβ^1-40 in a transgenic mouse model wasenabled by conjugation to the rat 8D3 monoclonal antibody tothe mouse transferrin receptor. The Aβ^1-40_8D3 conjugate is abifunctional molecule that binds the blood-brain barrier TfRand unuergoes transport into brain and binds the Aβ amyloidpiaques of AIzheimer disease. App^sw/Psenl double-transgenicand littermate control mice were administered either unconju-gated Aβ^1-40 or the Aβ^1-40_8D3 conjugate intravenously, andbrain scans were obtained 6 hours later. Immunocytochemical analysis showed abundant Aβ immunoreactive plaques in thebrains of the App^sw/Psenl transgenic mice and there was aselective retention of radioactivity in the brains of these mice at6 hours after intravenous administration of the conjugate. Incontrast, there was no selective sequestration either of the con-jugate in control littermate mouse brain or of unconjugatedAβ in transgenic mouse brain. In conclusion, the resultsshow that it is possible to image the Aβ amyloid burden in thebrain in vivo with an amyloid imaging agent, provided themolecule is conjugated to a blood-brain barrier drug-targetingsystem.
