        Synthesis, characterization and application of zinc augmented aminated PAN nanofibers towards decontamination of chemical and biological contaminants

        A novel amine functionalized Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) based electrospun nanofibers mat decorated with zinc (A/Zn/PAN) was synthesized, characterized and evaluated for the decontamination of chemical and biological contaminants. The loading capacity of the chromium (Cr (VI)) and congo red (CR) dye on A/Zn/ PAN nanofiber mat were approximately 23 and 25 mg/g, respectively. Various adsorption parameters like pH, kinetics, dose rate were ascertained by using batch adsorption experiments. Using XPS studies a suitable mechanism has been proposed for the adsorption. The nanofiber mat was found to be effective in inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus bacterial strains.

        Clinical and Social Outcomes of Cochlear Implantation in Older Prelinguals

        Background and Objectives: Cochlear implantation in late implanted prelinguals necessitates a complex decision-making process for clinicians and patients due to the uncertainty of achieving adequate benefit in auditory and speech perception. This study longitudinally evaluated clinical and social outcomes of prelingually deaf children with implantation in their late childhood.Subjects and Methods: A total of 113 (49 females and 64 males) participants, with an age range of 5-15 years, were assessed for the pre-implant parameters such as hearing loss etiology, aided responses, anatomical aspects, and psychological evaluation. The Category of Auditory Performance, Speech Awareness Threshold, Speech Reception Threshold, and Speech Discrimination Score were administered to assess the patient’s auditory skills. Further, the Speech Intelligibility Rating scale was administered to evaluate the patient’s speech intelligibility at 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 months post-surgery. Subjectively perceived benefits were evaluated using the satisfaction rating scale and a questionnaire.Results: The statistical results showed a significant impact of cochlear implantation in all domains. Positive impact and improvement post-implantation were noted in all the spheres, including auditory, linguistic, social, and educational.Conclusions: The study highlighted that the outcomes of a cochlear implant at a later age might not parallel with the implantation at a younger age. However, this still provides measurable benefits even after a longer period of auditory deprivation.

        Synthesis of reduced graphene oxide incorporated bimetallic (Cu/Bi) nanorods based photocatalyst materials for the degradation of gallic acid and bacteria

        Gallic acid (GA) is a polyphenols compound commonly present in wastewater that immensely affectsaquatic and human life. GA is also responsible for the inhibitory effects on the microbial activity in thesoil, thereby decreasing the fertility of the soil. Therefore, the removal of GA from the wastewater is necessaryto combat such issues. The present study focused on the synthesis of reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) incorporated bimetallic (Cu/Bi) based nanorods (r-GO-Cu/Bi-NRs) and their photocatalytic applications. Incorporating GO within the CuBi2O4-NRs might decrease the bandgap value, thereby increasingthe interfacial charge transfer. Moreover, GO increased the reactive sites and oxygen defects onto ther-GO-Cu/Bi-NRs that led to the separation rate of the photo-induced charge carriers and migration,thereby enhancing the photodegradation ability of the synthesized r-GO-Cu/Bi-NRs. The synthesis processof the r-GO-Cu/Bi-NRs is facile, novel, and economically viable for the photocatalytic degradationof organic pollutants.

        Exploration of Heat Stress-Responsive Markers in Understanding Trait Associations in Wheat

        Heat stress (HS) is detrimental to wheat production and productivity globally. To combat HS, several genetic, molecular, and genomic approaches have been employed in the past. Analyzing the physiochemical mechanisms and the important regulatory genes involved is the key to develop HS tolerant plants. In the present work, a total of 243 novel simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers developed from stress-associated genes identified through RNA-seq were used for understanding marker–trait associations. 37 SSRs were found to be clearly polymorphic and among these, 28 SSR loci were significantly associated with component traits of HS tolerance. The polymorphic SSRs were validated for diversity analysis on a subset of 85 genotypes. The genotypes were grouped into four clusters representing diverse and similar alleles imparting HS tolerance in Indian and exotic genotypes. Additionally, 28 genes selected for the expression analysis confirmed that 15 genes were induced under HS in the thermotolerant WH1021 and Raj3765 and repressed in thermosusceptible HD2009 cultivar. Hence, the information on traits associated with candidate genes and the SSR markers overlying on the gene will enhance our understanding of thermotolerance mechanism operating in wheat and will help the breeders in the precise development of heat-tolerant genotypes through marker-assisted selection (MAS).
