Bitter melon (BM) was tested in normal and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. First, normal and diabetic Wistar rats were given four test extracts (EX-1–EX-4) of a wild-genotype BM or metformin by intubation. Second,normal Sprague–Dawley rats were divided into control and three test groups given for 52 days one of three BM preparations in food: Chinese or Indian commercial preparations or EX-4 from experiment I. In experiment I, extracts of BM administered at 50 mg/kg of body weight in normal rats reduced blood sugar for 4 hours without, unlike metformin, inducing hypoglycemia. In STZ-induced diabetic rats, two extracts administered at 250 mg/kg decreased glucose levels to values comparable to metformin at 150 mg/kg. At 4 hours, EX-1 and EX-4 significantly reduced blood glucose 67% and 63%, respectively, compared with metformin’s 54%. In experiment II, all test groups had lowered systolic, but not diastolic, blood pressure. The China and EX-4 arms had significantly lowered serum glucose levels compared with the control. In the glucose tolerance test, only EX-4had significantly lowered glucose levels. Only EX-4 had significantly lowered angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity. All active arms showed significance in the losartan challenge (the renin–angiotensin system [RAS]), with the greatest effect in the EX-4 group. In the Nx-nitro-l-arginine-methyl ester challenge, only EX-4 exhibited a significant impact on the nitric oxide system, suggesting higher activity in this group. In the STZ-induced diabetic rat model, wild-type BM powerfully lowered glucose levels, and, in healthy adult rats, wild-type BM exhibited beneficial effects in the regulation of blood glucose, in RAS and ACE inhibition, and in nitric oxide generation.

Use of recycled aggregates in portland cement concrete (PCC) construction can offer benefits associated with both economy and sustainability. Testing performed to date indicates that recycled brick masonry aggregate (RBMA) can be used as a 100% replacement for conventional coarse aggregate in concrete that exhibits acceptable mechanical properties for use in structural and pavement elements, including satisfactory performance in some durability tests. Recycled brick masonry aggregate concrete (RBMAC) is currently not used in any type of construction in the United States. However, use of RBMAC could become a viable construction strategy as sustainable building practices become the norm. This paper explores the feasibility of use of RBMAC in several types of sustainable construction initiatives, based upon the findings of previous work with RBMAC that incorporates RBMA produced from construction and demolition waste from a case study site. A summary of material properties of RBMAC that will be useful to construction professionals are presented, along with a discussion of advantages and impediments to use. Several quality assurance and quality control techniques that could be incorporated into specifications are identified.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) commonly metastasizes to the lung, liver, bones, and brain; however, cutaneous metastases remain rare with few reported cases. Since RCCs have the propensity to metastasize to highly vascular areas, the scalp and skin of the head and neck region are likely locations for cutaneous metastases. We report a rare case of a large, exophytic, cauliflower-like, hemorrhagic, metastatic mass of the posterior neck. This is the first reported case of a head and neck cutaneous RCC metastasis treated with endovascular embolization prior to surgical resection. Due to the increased vascularity of RCCs and risk of excessive hemorrhage during resection, adjunctive embolization of cutaneous head and neck metastasis may have a role. Essential characteristics to our treatment strategy are discussed with a review of pertinent literature.

Bacterial wilt caused by the pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum is a devastating disease of potato crops. Harmonizing immunity to pathogens and crop yield is a balance between productive, economic, and environmental interests. In this work, the agronomic performance of two events of potato cultivar INIA Iporá expressing the Arabidopsis thaliana EFR gene (Iporá EFR 3 and Iporá EFR 12) previously selected for their high resistance to bacterial wilt was evaluated under pathogen- free conditions. During two cultivation cycles, the evaluated phenotypic characteristics were emergence, beginning of flowering, vigor, growth, leaf morphology, yield, number and size of tubers, analyzed under biosecurity standards. The phenotypic characteristics evaluated did not show differences, except in the morphology of the leaf with a more globose appearance and a shortening of the rachis in the transformation events with respect to untransformed Iporá. The Iporá EFR 3 genotype showed a ~40% yield decrease in reference to untransformed Iporá in the two trials, while Iporá EFR 12 did not differ statistically from untransformed Iporá. Iporá EFR 12 shows performance stability in the absence of the pathogen, compared to the untransformed control, positioning it as an interesting candidate for regions where the presence of the pathogen is endemic and bacterial wilt has a high economic impact.
Effect of the Bleaching on Physical and Mechanical Properties of Different Fabrics

Two different commercial bleaching products containing hypochlorite were used on different fabrics (plain-weave cotton, knitted cotton, plain-weave polyester-cotton and knitted lycra-cotton) to verify possible fibres damages. Bleaching products differ each other for the alkaline formulation. In particular, one of them has an alkaline bleaching formulation and the other has a low-alkaline bleaching formulation. The degree of whiteness, the tensile and bursting strength, and the thermal and surface properties were evaluated after a different number of washing cycles. The obtained results reveal that the alkaline bleaching product is better than the low-alkaline bleaching product in maintaining mechanical properties and in improving optical properties of the fabrics.

EDS는 관절의 과운동성, 피부의 과신장, 조직 약화 등을 임상적 특징으로 하는 유전 질환이다. 피부, 골격, 근육, 인대, 점막, 혈관 등을 구성하는 교원질의 합성 과정과 관련된 유전자의 결함으로 결합조직이 비정상적으로 변하므로 신체 전반에 걸쳐 그 증상이 나타난다. 구강 영역에서도 교원 질과 관련된 조직에 영향을 받게 된다. 구강 점막, 치주 조직, 측두하악관절 및 치아 경조직에 문제가 발생할 수 있으므로, 총체적이고 정기적인 구강관리가 이루어져야 한다. 이번 증례와 같이 EDS에 의해 치아의 맹출 장애가 발생하고, 치은비대, 유착, 매복, 선천적 결손치, 부정교합 등이 관찰되는 경우에도 구강 위생 관리와 함께 장기적인 계획 하에 맹출 관리 및 치료가 요구된다. EDS 환아의 치과 치료시에는 질환의 원인과 전신적 특징에 대한 이해를 바탕으로, 비정상적 교원질 대사에 의해 약화된 점막과 치주조직, 지혈 관리, 반흔 형성 및 측두하악관절에 대한 종합적인 고려와 지속적인 관리가 필요하다. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), an inherited connective tissue disorder, is caused by mutations in genes encoding different types of collagen or collagen-processing enzymes. EDS most typically affects the joints, ligaments, skin, and blood vessels. Oral health may be severely compromised in EDS as a result of specific alterations of collagen in orofacial structures. Dental hard tissue defects, root dilaceration, pulp stones, ectopic or delayed eruption, impaction, and periodontal disease could be observed. Therefore, a number of tissue responses related to collagen and precautions should be anticipated when considering dental treatment in EDS. Long-term and comprehensive dental management is required. The purpose of this report is to describe a clinical case of eruption disorders in a patient with EDS.
