Lexical Bundle Structure Distribution in Argumentative Writing of Korean and American University Students

        Nam, Daehyeon 한국중앙영어영문학회 2016 영어영문학연구 Vol.58 No.4

The current study compares and contrasts the structure of recurrent multi-word units, lexical bundles, in Korean and American university students’ writing. Two sets of corpora were prepared from the students’ argumentative writings. A series of chi-square tests with standardized residuals was conducted to identify the idiosyncratic characteristics of the lexical bundle structures in the two corpora. The study found that the structure and the distribution of the lexical bundle types and tokens in the Korean university students’ writing were different, i.e., the Korean students used lexical bundle types and tokens more frequently than the American university students. The major contributors of the difference were found to be the overuse of noun phrase-based bundles, preposition phrase-based bundles, and personal pronoun with certain lexical bundles. The results also confirmed that the Korean students used more lexical bundles that are usually found in conversation register. Pedagogical implications of the findings and future research suggestions are also introduced and discussed.

Korean ESL Writers' Vocabulary Usage Patterns in Cultural Comparison

        Nam, Daehyeon(남대현) 한국영어교과교육학회 2010 영어교과교육 Vol.9 No.2

Writing activity generally requires multiple levels of language performance, from the grammar or vocabulary knowledge to the organization of thoughts, ideas, and views on topics. Therefore, writing samples can be good sources for researchers and practitioners to investigate the L2 writers' thoughts on certain topics. Twenty-four college-level Korean ESL learners’ expository writing samples, comparing the cultural differences between Korea and the U.S., are analyzed to identify the patterns and characteristics of the ESL writings. A corpus-based text analysis method is employed to investigate the writing samples both quantitatively and qualitatively with word frequency list, key words, and concordance. The results reveal that: (1) the writers use pronouns selectively depending on how they view and position themselves in the context of their own writings; (2) the writers show limited productive vocabulary in writing when expressing their thoughts; and (3) the Korean ESL writers tend to use gender-biased examples when comparing the Korean and American cultures. Implications of the findings and suggestions for writing instructions are also discussed.

A Corpus-Based Discourse Analysis of ESL Reader Response to a Political News Article

        Daehyeon Nam,James Damico 한국언어과학회 2012 언어과학 Vol.19 No.3

The current study explores how ESL students in an international high school in East Asia position themselves after reading a politically-oriented English news article about the Taiwan Straits from a Mainland China perspective. The news article and the students’ responses were collected and analyzed with a corpus-based discourse analysis approach. The analysis revealed three primary findings: (1) the news article represents distinct views about the issue of the Taiwan Straits; (2) the ESL readers identified these distinct views; and (3) the cultural and social backgrounds of the ESL readers play a crucial role in their position and evaluation of the news article.

A Corpus-Based Analysis of Lexical Salience and Association in ESL Writing

        Nam Daehyeon(남대현) 새한영어영문학회 2012 새한영어영문학 Vol.54 No.3

The current study reviews the concordancer as a vocabulary reference tool for the ESL writing instruction and evaluation of ESL writing quality. Corpus evidence, as studies of corpus-based language learning have argued, can be used to identify typical and atypical usages of vocabulary. The evidence also suggests what words are typically used in the target language writing contexts. Few studies analyzed the actual writing sample text data through empirical research methodology to confirm the arguments. Within a quasi-experimental design, then, the current study analyzes and evaluates the ESL writing sample texts through the corpus linguistic text analysis method and discusses the results of the analysis.

Cyber University’s Blended Learning Model : Based on Learners’ Hindrance Factors

        Nam Daehyeon,Kim, Hijean 한국중앙영어영문학회 2011 영어영문학연구 Vol.53 No.2

While e-earning systems seem to resolve the issues of time, space, and costs of education, these seeming advantages may overlook the perceptions of the students who take the courses. With particular consideration to the characteristics of the students who typically enroll in online courses, the current study investigates a possible blended learning model for cyber universities which includes onsite and video conferencing classes. A large amount of survey and interview data were collected to ascertain the hindrance factors present in the blended learning model and to suggest a blended learning model appropriate to a cyber university environment. The study identified hindrance factors in terms of the following four aspects of learning: learning environment, video conferencing classes and onsite classes, learners’ personality, and learners’ motivation. The characteristics of the cyber university’s demographic information can explain some of the hindrance factors. As the ultimate goal of traditional blended learning is to incorporate online and onsite learning to maximize the students’ onsite learning, the same is true for the online learning in the cyber university’s blended learning program. However, if course designers want to implement the model, as the current study suggests, it is necessary to consider the cyber university student-specific hindrance factors to guarantee the efficacy of the blended learning model.

      • The fabrication of a conversion film on AZ31 containing carbonate product and evaluation of its corrosion resistance

        Nam, Daehyeon,Lim, Dongwook,Kim, Sang-Deuk,Seo, Dongjo,Shim, Sang Eun,Baeck, Sung-Hyeon Elsevier 2018 Journal of alloys and compounds Vol.737 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A carbonate-containing conversion film was fabricated on the surface of AZ31 magnesium alloy to enhance its corrosion resistance by immersion in a CO2 saturated NaOH solution by varying the immersion times (0, 1, 10, 30, and 60 min). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were utilized to investigate the morphology, crystallinity, and composition of the surface, respectively. The corrosion resistance was tested using a 5 wt% NaCl solution and electrochemical analysis was conducted to confirm the influence of the immersion time on the corrosion resistances of AZ31 alloys. The composition of formed film consisting of a magnesium complex was strongly influenced by the immersion time, where the carbonate and aluminum contents on the surface of the samples increased after the immersion treatment. The AZ31 alloy immersed in NaOH for 10 min possessed a suitable conversion coating film with a magnesium complex, consequently leading to the best corrosion resistance.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The carbonate-containing films were synthesized using the AZ31 by immersing method. </LI> <LI> The corrosion resistance, surface morphology and composition of film were investigated. </LI> <LI> The film consisted of the carbonate contacting magnesium complex having the formula [Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2·5H2O]. </LI> <LI> The optimized time was 10 min in immersing method to enhance the corrosion resistance of AZ31. </LI> </UL> </P>

Functional Distribution of Lexical Bundle in Native and Non-Native Students’ Argumentative Writing

Daehyeon Nam 아시아영어교육학회 2017 The Journal of Asia TEFL Vol.14 No.4

Although the idea of collocation has been the core of the Firthian linguistic approach, only recently did language researchers and practitioners pay close attention to recurrent multi-word combinations or lexical bundles. Unlike the studies of roles of collocation in a language, the research of lexical bundles has shown that they are crucial building blocks of discourse and register in academic disciplines. Given the fact that the role of lexical bundles in the writings of academic community has become a subject of ESL/EFL, the current study investigates the functional distribution of lexical bundles between the argumentative writing corpora contributed by Korean and American college students. The functional lexical bundle types and tokens are compared regarding the distribution and frequency. A series of statistical analyses demonstrated that, in the Korean students’ argumentative writing, stance lexical bundle and discourse organizers are more frequently used. On the other hand, the American students’ writing includes more referential expressions. These findings suggest that, when aiming for a proficient and advanced writing level, Korean college students need to be frequently exposed to lexical bundles and explicitly taught with the discourse functions in the academic writing genre. This paper also introduces and discusses pedagogical implications and future research suggestions.
