The diagnosis or exclusion of pulmonary embolism (PE) remains challenging for emergency physicians. Symptoms can be vague or non-existent, and the clinical presentation shares features with many other common diagnoses. Diagnostic testing is complicated, as biomarkers, like the D-dimer, are frequently false positive, and imaging, like computed tomography pulmonary angiography, carries risks of radiation and contrast dye exposure. It is therefore incumbent on emergency physicians to be both vigilant and thoughtful about this diagnosis. In recent years, several advances in treatment have also emerged. Novel, direct-acting oral anticoagulants make the outpatient treatment of low risk PE easier than before. However, the spectrum of PE severity varies widely, so emergency physicians must be able to risk-stratify patients to ensure the appropriate disposition. Finally, PE response teams have been developed to facilitate rapid access to advanced therapies (e.g., catheter directed thrombolysis) for patients with high-risk PE. This review will discuss the clinical challenges of PE diagnosis, risk stratification and treatment that emergency physicians face every day.

This article presents the case for prosocial education as: 1) being the right of every student, parent, and teacher; 2) providing a systemic evidence-based process designed to enhance school attachment, promote social development, and increase academic success; and 3) offering a necessary foundation for effective educational policy. We develop the idea of prosocial education in the context of U.S. education and its challenges; however, we also show how it can be a useful framework to organize school improvement efforts in different nations as well as to inform educational policy for any nation. We illustrate how helping educators create positive, stimulating classrooms and schools, and effectively integrate prosocial ideas into daily practices, develops students physically, socially, behaviorally, ethically, emotionally, and intellectually, providing the competencies essential to become citizens committed to contributing to the common good.
Political Confucianism and Human Rights
Daniel P. Corrigan 성균관대학교 유교문화연구소 2022 儒敎文化硏究(中文版) Vol.- No.37
This article examines the theory of human rights developed by Tongdong Bai in his Confucian-inspired political philosophy. Partly influenced by Rawls’s “political liberalism,” Bai seeks to offer a “political conception” of Confucianism. However, Bai’s methodological approach also deviates from Rawls’s approach in certain key respects, and this has significant implications for his theory of human rights. The article begins with a comparison of Rawls’s and Bai’s methodological approaches. It then discusses how these competing methodologies are used by each philosopher to develop a theory of human rights and international relations. Finally, the article seeks to adjudicate these competing accounts of human rights. Notably, Bai does not follow Rawls in offering a “political conception” of human rights, one which recognizes the role of human rights in mediating international relations between states. While Rawls’s political conception of human rights has been the subject of criticism, it is shown that even a revised version of this theory presents challenges for Bai’s account. The article concludes by offering suggestions about how Bai’s theory of human rights should be revised in order to adhere to his methodological approach. The issues raised in this article present a challenge not only for Bai, but for any attempt to develop a Confucian theory of human rights.
Steel Corrosion Map of Vietnam
( Ivan Cole ),( Penny Corrigan ),( Nguyen Viet Hue ) 한국부식방식학회(구 한국부식학회) 2012 Corrosion Science and Technology Vol.11 No.4
In the framework of an International cooperation program in Australia-Asia, the atmospheric corrosion of metals in five nations located in this tropical zone: Australia, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia was investigated, In this program, mild steel, zinc and copper were tested on a set of sites, representative for different climatic conditions: severe marine, marine, industrial, urban and rural, simultaneously with the collection of climatic parameters and pollutants. Based on the data obtained in the Program and referring to the bank of data collected in the Vietnam National Projects, modeling was used to construct a corrosion map of steel for Vietnam. The correlation of the data derived from the map compared with those from National Projects is very high, in most cases, differing by less than 2-3%.

Purpose: Self-directed learning (SDL) has been increasingly emphasized within medical education. However, little is known about the SDL resources medical students use. This study aimed to identify patterns in medical students’ SDL behaviors, their SDL resource choices, factors motivating these choices, and the potential impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on these variables. Methods: An online cross-sectional survey comprising multiple-choice, ranked, and free-text response questions were disseminated to medical students across all 41 UK medical schools between April and July 2020. Independent study hours and sources of study materials prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic were compared. Motivational factors guiding resource choices and awareness of Free Open Access Meducation were also investigated. Results: The target sample was 75 students per medical school across a total of 41 medical schools within the United Kingdom (3,075 total students), and 1,564 responses were analyzed. University-provided information comprised the most commonly used component of independent study time, but a minority of total independent study time. Independent study time increased as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic (P<0.001). All sub-cohorts except males reported a significant increase in the use of resources such as free websites and question banks (P<0.05) and paid websites (P<0.05) as a result of the pandemic. Accessibility was the most influential factor guiding resource choice (Friedman’s μrank=3.97, P<0.001). Conclusion: The use of learning resources independent of university provision is increasing. Educators must ensure equitable access to such materials while supporting students in making informed choices regarding their independent study behaviors.
Structure-rheology elucidation of human blood via SPP framework and TEVP modeling

Recent work modeling the rheological behavior of human blood indicates that it has all the hallmark features of a complex material, including shear-thinning, viscoelastic behavior, a yield stress, and thixotropy. After decades of modeling steady state blood data, and the development of simple steady state models, like the Casson and Herschel-Bulkley the advancement and evolution of blood modeling to incorporate more thixo-elasto-visco-plastic (TEVP) features to accurately capture transient flow has renewed interest. With recently collected steady state and oscillatory shear flow rheological data from a DHR-3 using human blood, we show modeling efforts with a contemporary thixo-elasto-visco-plastic (TEVP) model. Best fit rheological model parameters are used to determine values for normal, h ealthy blood and corroborate correlations from literature. Series of physical processes (SPP) analysis is incorporated to illustrate how mechanical properties are tied to the transient, evolving microstructure of human blood and physiological parameters. Using LAOS data predictions of the structure parameter, is compared, and correlated with the transient elastic modulus, .
