Western Influence on South Korean Media

SELCUK COLAKOGLU,AYKUT HAMIT TURAN,BENGU EMINE COLAKOGLU 한국언론학회 2007 Asian Communication Research Vol.4 No.2

The dominant influence of Western media on non Western countries are widely acknowledged and researched by communication as well as political science scholars. In this research, we analyzed three possible impacts namely, the positive, negative and natural impacts of Western originated news published in Korean media about Turkey with a political point of view. In this research, we used content analysis technique to classify newspaper articles according to mentioned impact types. Our findings indicated that Western media has profound effects on Korean news media and extensively exerts cultural imperialism. Moreover, we found that Western originated news, published in Korean media, communicate less positive message about Turkey. We further argued that Korean originated news about Turkey carries more positive messages about Turkey and Turkish people. Hence, we suggest that Turkey and Korea would be cautious about Western-originated news and seek as much as possible direct information sources.

      • Effect of Temperature on Frequency and Damping Properties of Polymer Matrix Composites

Colakoglu, M. The Korean Society for Composite Materials 2008 Advanced composite materials Vol.17 No.2

The effect of temperature on natural frequency and damping is investigated in two different composite materials, Kevlar 29 fiber woven and polyethylene cloth, used especially to design ballistic armor. A damping monitoring method is used experimentally to measure the frequency response curve and it is also modeled numerically using a finite element program. The natural frequencies of a material, or a system, are a function of its elastic properties, dimensions and mass. This concept is used to calculate theoretical vibration modes of the composites. The damping properties in terms of the damping factor are determined by the half-power bandwidth technique. Numerically analyzed and experimentally measured time response curves are compared. It is seen that polymer matrix composites have temperature dependent mechanical properties. This relationship is functional and they have different effects against temperature.

The Role of MIKTA in Global Governance: Assessments & Shortcomings

Selcuk Colakoglu 한국학술연구원 2016 Korea Observer Vol.47 No.2

The importance of middle powers in global governance first began to take off in the 1990’s. Before this period the global economy could be conceived of as consisting of two spheres: the rich north, represented by the G7, and the poor south. The establishment of the G20 as a broader body incorporating middle powers can be seen as a concrete display of the change in the global economy’s center. Concurrently, the constellation known as BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) grew in prominence on the world stage. In this sense, the middle powers which have been excluded from the G7 and BRICS have now become a second-tier group within the G20. Such circumstances have forced these middle powers to act in unison with the G20, the UN, and other international organizations and forums. In September of 2013, five of the G20’s middle powers declared their participation in a new formation termed MIKTA, an acronym of its member states, namely Mexico, Indonesia, the Republic of South Korea, Turkey, and Australia. Largely considered to be an informal and low-profile forum, MIKTA primarily aims to serve and protect the interests of its five members in the global arena. This article examines the role of MIKTA in global governance as well as its future prospects and overall sustainability.

      • Health Tourism with Data Mining: Present State and Future Potentials

        Gamze Kose,Osman Eralp Colakoglu 한국디지털융합학회 2023 IJICTDC Vol.8 No.1

Health Tourism is a trendy interest area as it allows individuals to travel another country for receiving health services while experiencing touristic opportunities. There are many benefits of health tourism in terms of costs, services, and experiences. By combining both health and tourism area, it welcomes many research directions in not only healthcare and tourism but also marketing and business management. Among these the area of Health Tourism is intensively connected with digital solutions since it is important to reach out individuals in different countries and enabling them to decide and come to the host country for receiving services. So, the data is very important for establishing innovative Health Tourism applications. However, one question arising is about how to analyze, process and use the data effectively within the purposes of such applications. This paper tries to answer this question from the perspective of Data Mining. As the Data Mining allows creating descriptive and predictive new knowledge from the known data, its use in digital Health Tourism applications has a remarkable value. In this context, this paper firstly ensures the connection between Health Tourism and Data Mining, and then discusses about present state as well as the future. It is believed that the outcomes from this paper will be a triggering factor for further research in Data Mining, which is currently a niche application way in Health Tourism.

      • Associations between Adiponectin and Two Different Cancers: Breast and Colon

Gulcelik, Mehmet Ali,Colakoglu, Kadri,Dincer, Halil,Dogan, Lutfi,Yenidogan, Erdinc,Gulcelik, Nese Ersoz Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.1

Objectives: Breast and colon cancer are neoplasms well known to be related to obesity. Adiponectin, a protein that increases in obesity, seems to be involved in the relationship but clinical data are limited. Methods: In this study, we therefore evaluated the serum adiponectin levels in 87 breast and 27 colon cancer patients and assessed the relation with BMI, menopausal status, receptor status and stage of disease. Results: Serum adiponectin levels were lower in cancer cases ($8583{\pm}2095$ ng/ml for breast cancer, $9513{\pm}2276$ for colon cancer) than in controls ($13905{\pm}3263$). Conclusion: A low serum adiponectin level may be associated with both breast and colon cancer, and that this association is not statistically significant for either receptor or menopausal status in breast cancer groups.

Clinical and preclinical tolerance protocols for vascularized composite allograft transplantation

        Jerry Huanda Yang,Ariel C. Johnson,Salih Colakoglu,Christene A. Huang,David Woodbridge Mathes 대한성형외과학회 2021 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.48 No.6

The field of vascularized composite allografts (VCAs) has undergone significant advancement in recent decades, and VCAs are increasingly common and accepted in the clinical setting, bringing hope of functional recovery to patients with debilitating injuries. A major obstacle facing the widespread application of VCAs is the side effect profile associated with the current immunosuppressive regimen, which can cause a wide array of complications such as infection, malignancy, and even death. Significant concerns remain regarding whether the treatment outweighs the risk. The potential solution to this dilemma would be achieving VCA tolerance, which would allow recipients to receive allografts without significant immunosuppression and its sequelae. Promising tolerance protocols are being studied in kidney transplantation; four major trials have attempted to withdraw immunosuppressive treatment with various successes. The common theme in all four trials is the use of radiation treatment and donor cell transplantation. The knowledge gained from these trials can provide valuable insight into the development of a VCA tolerance protocol. Despite similarities, VCAs present additional barriers compared to kidney allografts regarding tolerance induction. VCA donors are likely to be deceased, which limits the time for significant pre-conditioning. VCA donors are also more likely to be human leukocyte antigen–mismatched, which means that tolerance must be induced across major immunological barriers. This review also explores adjunct therapies studied in large animal models that could be the missing element in establishing a safe and stable tolerance induction method.
