Item-Level Psychometrics of the 12 Items of the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Scale

        남상훈,Hilton, Claudia L.,이미정,Pritchard, Kevin T.,배수영,홍익표 대한신경계작업치료학회 2022 재활치료과학 Vol.11 No.3

Objective : This study examined the psychometric properties of the 12-item Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Scale (COPE) using Rasch analysis. COPE is one of the instruments used to measure stress-coping skills. Methods : The study participants were 480 community-dwelling older adults. We tested the instrument’s unidimensionality assumption using principal component analysis (PCA). Item fit was examined using infit-and-outfit mean-square (MnSq) and standardized fit statistics (ZSTD). The precision and item difficulty hierarchies of the instrument were examined. The item-difficulty hierarchy was investigated to identify the easy and difficult items. We tested differential item functioning (DIF) for sex and age groups. Results : PCA revealed that the instrument met the unidimensionality assumption (eigenvalue = 1.78). Among the 12 items, item 2 was removed because of misfit (Infit MnSq = 1.33, Infit ZSTD = 5.05, Outfit MnSq = 1.56, Outfit ZSTD = 7.15). The remaining 11 items demonstrated a conceptual item-difficulty hierarchy. The person strata value was 3.10, which is equivalent to a reliability index value of 0.81. There was no DIF for the sex and age groups (DIF contrast <0.27). Conclusion : The findings indicated that the revised COPE-11 has adequate item-level psychometric properties and can accurately measure stress coping skills.

Validation of Sensory Outcome Measure: Findings from the 2011 Survey of Pathway to Diagnosis and Services

        Mi Jung Lee,Karen Ratcliff,Claudia L. Hilton,홍익표 대한작업치료학회 2019 대한작업치료학회지 Vol.27 No.4

Objective: To evaluate item-factor structures of the 15 sensory items from the Survey of Pathways to Diagnosisand Services (Pathways) and examine the best fitting model. Methods: The study subjects were 1,968 children aged 6-17 years, who had ever been diagnosed with AutismSpectrum Disorder (ASD) and/or Intellectual Disability (ID). Factor analyses and item response theory modelswere used to determine the best fitting item-factor structure of the sensory items. The Strengths andDifficulties Questionnaires (SDQ) was used to test the concurrent validity of the sensory severity estimates. Results: A bifactor MIRT model (a general and four sensory factors) was selected as the best fitting model. Allitems statistically fitted to the bifactor model (p > .01) and showed moderate correlations with all five subscalesof the SDQ (rs = .31 ~.51, p < .0001). The general sensory score differentiated the four different diagnosticgroups (ASD, ID, ASD with ID, and no current symptoms) [F (3,1961) = 207.4, p < .0001]. Conclusion: The Pathways sensory items yielded reliable estimates of the general and each corresponding sensoryfactor by applying a bifactor MIRT model. The sensory score can be used as a valid sensory measure in thepopulation survey.

Animal-Assisted Interventions for Improving Psychosocial Well-being and Quality of Life in Pediatric Oncology : A Systematic Review

        Amy Sitabkhan,Kaela Verbeck,Pamela Ruz,Kayleigh Pierce,Amy Ngo,Claudia L. Hilton,Diane M. Collins 대한작업치료학회 2020 대한작업치료학회지 Vol.28 No.3

Objectives: This systematic review examined the association of animal-assisted interventions (AAI) with quality of life (QoL) for pediatric oncology patients, for potential use in occupational therapy practice. Methods: Articles published in peer-reviewed journals between 2002-2019 from PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, American Journal of Occupational Therapy (AJOT), Journal of Oncology, SCOPUS, and OTSeeker were selected for AAI with therapy dogs specific to the target population of pediatric oncology patients undergoing treatment in clinical settings. Results: Moderate evidence was found for AAI and mood improvement, pain reduction, and stress relief; and low-level evidence supported AAI for decreasing anxiety. The most significant AAI improvements were seen in perceptions of pain, stress levels, and mood. Discussion: Evidence suggests that occupational therapists may want to consider incorporating AAI into therapy sessions as it serves as a distraction and short-term coping strategy for children undergoing oncological treatment.

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Quality of Sleep in Children : A Systematic Review

        Teara Kelly,Krista Pon,Bella Abril,Susanna Lorenz,Claudia L. Hilton 대한작업치료학회 2020 대한작업치료학회지 Vol.28 No.3

Objectives: This systematic review sought to examine existing studies addressing the relationship between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and children’s sleep quality. Methods: An exhaustive literature search was performed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Records were identified through PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, and Ovid. Results: Fourteen studies were reviewed showing moderate evidence supporting the relationship between ACEs and sleep problems. Child sexual abuse was the most frequently reported form of maltreatment and was significantly linked to sleep problems. Common sleep problems included difficulty falling asleep, nocturnal awakening, nightmares, daytime sleepiness, and poor quality of sleep. Discussion: Occupational therapy practitioners are encouraged to include evaluation and interventions for sleep disturbances in children who have known or suspected traumatic experiences. More specific studies are needed to further understand differences between ages and sexes and whether type of abuse makes a difference in this relationship.
