Ligand-Receptor Recognition for Activation of Quorum Sensing in Staphylococcus aureus
Li-Chun Chen,Li-Tse Tsou,Feng-Jui Chen 한국미생물학회 2009 The journal of microbiology Vol.47 No.5
The accessory gene regulator (agr) locus controls many of the virulence toxins involved in Staphylococcus aureus pathogenesis, and can be divided into four specificity groups. AgrC is the only group-specific receptor to mediate both intra-group activation and inter-group inhibition. We studied the ligand-receptor recognition of the agr system in depth by using a luciferase reporter system to identify the key residues responsible for AgrC activation in two closely related agr groups, AgrC-I, and AgrC-IV. Fusion PCR and site-directed mutagenesis were used to screen for functional residues of AgrC. Our data suggest that for AgrC-IV activation, residue 101 is critical for activating the receptor. In contrast, the key residues for the activation of AgrC-I are located at residues 49~59, 107, and 116. However, three residue changes, T101A, V107S, I116S, are sufficient to convert the AIP recognizing specificity from AgrC-IV to AgrC-I.

This paper proposes a novel high-efficiency high-step-up interleaved converter with a voltage multiplier, which is suitable for electric vehicle power management applications. The proposed interleaved converter is capable of achieving high step-up conversion by employing a voltage-multiplier circuit. The proposed converter lowers the input-current ripple, which can extend the input source's lifetime, and reduces the voltage stress on the main switches. Hence, large voltage spikes across the main switches are alleviated and the efficiency is improved. Finally, a prototype circuit with an input voltage of 24 V, an output voltage of 380 V, and an output rated power of 1 kW is implemented and tested to demonstrate the functionality of the proposed converter. Moreover, satisfying experimental results are obtained and discussed in this paper. The measured full-load efficiency is 95.2%, and the highest measured efficiency of the proposed converter is 96.3%.

of Midcourse Guidance Laws via a Combination of Fuzzy and SMC Approaches
Yew-Wen Liang,Chun-Hone Chen,Der-Cherng Liaw,Shih-Tse Chang,Sheng-Dong Xu 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2010 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.8 No.2
Issues regarding the design of midcourse guidance laws for antimissiles are addressed. The antimissile is expected to be guided to a place with a desired direction, where a ballistic missile is predicted to pass in the reverse direction, so that the target can be easily found and locked for terminal interception. The predicted location and direction of a ballistic missile may vary with time, due to information update using a trajectory prediction algorithm. To fulfill the guidance performance, the guidance laws are designed by combining the Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy approach and the Sliding Mode Control (SMC) technique. Under the designed guidance law, it is shown that the antimissile is able to be efficiently guided to a specified location and direction, even when the existence of uncertainties and disturbances.
Female Breast Cancer Incidence Among Asian and Western Populations: More Similar Than Expected
Sung, Hyuna,Rosenberg, Philip S.,Chen, Wan-Qing,Hartman, Mikael,Lim, Wei-yen,Chia, Kee Seng,Wai-Kong Mang, Oscar,Chiang, Chun-Ju,Kang, Daehee,Ngan, Roger Kai-Cheong,Tse, Lap Ah,Anderson, William F.,Ya U.S. Dept. of Health, Education, and Welfare, Publ 2015 Journal of the National Cancer Institute Vol.107 No.7

Background:

Previous reports suggested that female breast cancer is associated with earlier ages at onset among Asian than Western populations. However, most studies utilized cross-sectional analyses that may be confounded by calendar-period and/or birth cohort effects. We, therefore, considered a longitudinal (forward-looking) approach adjusted for calendar-period changes and conditioned upon birth cohort.

Methods:

Invasive female breast cancer data (1988–2009) were obtained from cancer registries in China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and the United States. Age-period-cohort models were used to extrapolate longitudinal age-specific incidence rates for the 1920, 1944, and 1970 birth cohorts.

Results:

Cross-sectional age-specific incidence rates rose continuously until age 80 years among US white women, but plateaued or decreased after age 50 years among Asian women. In contrast, longitudinal age-specific rates were proportional (similar) among all Asian countries and the United States with incidence rates rising continuously until age 80 years. The extrapolated estimates for the most recent cohorts in some Asian countries actually showed later ages at onset than in the United States. Additionally, over successive birth cohorts, the incidence rate ratios (IRRs) for the longitudinal curves converged (narrowed) between Asian and US white women.

Conclusions:

Similar longitudinal age-specific incidence rates along with converging IRRs indicate that the age effects for invasive breast cancer are more similar among Asian and Western populations than might be expected from a solely cross-sectional analysis. Indeed, the Asian breast cancer rates in recent generations are even surpassing the historically high rates in the United States, highlighting an urgent need for efficient prevention and treatment strategies among Asian populations.

We have developed superconducting mixer receivers for 129 GHz VLBI observation in Korean VLBI Network (KVN). The developed mixer has a radial waveguide probe with simple transmission line L-C transformer as a tuning circuit to its 5 series-connected junctions, which can have 125 - 165 GHz as the operation radio frequency (RF). For intermediate frequency (IF) signal path a high impedance quarter-wavelength line connects the probe to one end of symmetric RF chokes. The double side band (DSB) receiver noise of the mixer was about 40 K over 4 - 6 GHz IF band, whereas we achieved the uncorrected single side band (SSB) noise temperature of about 70 K and better than 10 dB image rejection ratio in 2SB configuration with 8 - 10 GHz IF band. Insert-type receiver cartridges employing the mixers have been under commission for KVN stations.
