Online Learner Engagement in Lifelong Learning and Higher Education: Strategies, Opportunities, Challenges

“Learner engagement” in higher educ ation is a challenging goal, even more so as we consider designing for, and supp orting, lifelong learners online. Learning organizations, from traditional to cybersystems, are tempted to look for universal plans and strategies that promise specific and guaranteed outcomes for students. While there are some universal strategies worth considering that support online learner engagement, we must also familiarize our selves with diverse sociocultural contexts of lifelong learning and about the effect of “engagement” as an explicit conceptual framework for developing online learning environments. As we work to further devel op online learner engagement, we must also consider the impact of interactions between and among instructional designers, subject matter experts, instructors, learners, the broader community, and the learning institution. These interactions in culturally -based, dynamic communities of learning and practice shift instructional design away from the purely predictable towards engaged learning. In this discussion paper, originally pre sented as a conference paper for the e-Lea rning Asia Conference 2009, we contrast institutional and sociocultural (global) responses to lifelong learning in the online environment, share Canadian approaches to engaged learning and instructional design, and reflect upon key questions about the development of engaged learning opport unities for online learners.

Temperature- and Magnetic-Field-Tuning of Magnetic Phases in Multiferroic NdFe3(BO3)4

We report the low-temperature coexistence in NdFe3(BO3)4 of an incommensurate magnetic phase with a strained commensurate magnetic phase that is primarily at the surface of the crystal. Increasing the temperature or magnetic field decreases the incommensurability and stabilizes the commensurate magnetic phase above Tic ≈ 14 K or Hic = 0.9 T. A comparison to published studies indicates the onset of longitudinal magnetostriction and electric polarization at the magnetic-fieldinduced transition, which may arise due to a basal plane spin-flop and canting of moments along the field direction.

Circulating Ethnicity : Images of Power in Cordillera Postage Stamps

  Discourse on history and culture continues to unfold on the postage stamp, a familiar visual form that is more than a square inch of sticky paper. Although today it faces stiff competition from the electronic mail, automatic or metered stamps and courier services, it remains a miniature genre in the context of visual culture.<BR>  My project explores the ways in which stamps could be thought to possess performative qualities, literally and metaphorically. I shall focus on stamps depicting historical events, scenic spots and indigenous peoples of and on the Cordillera, north Luzon, Philippines in the light of American colonialism and its vestiges today. The stamp and those which belong to what Nicholas Mirzoeff calls the territory of visual culture is defined not so much by its medium but by the interaction between the viewer and viewed. This visual event, according to Mirzoeff involves the interaction of the visual sign, the enabling and sustaining mechanism of the sign and the viewer. In other words, it constructs an image of something and reveals the workings of power within that image. Through Barthean semiotics and Foucauldian discourse, I show how the study of visual texts provides an ongoing interrogation of cultural products and how these circulate and negotiate identities and nation-ness within an increasingly global capitalist economy.

Literature as History: Igorots and the Culture of Resistance in the Fiction of Sinai C. Hamada

The true history of revolution in the Philippines is not tied to the center where forces converged to resist western colonization. I assert that the contributions of those in the margins, like the Igorots of the Cordillera, north Luzon, Philippines had significant contributions in the complex history of the Philippine revolution.Two short stories by Ibaloi-Japanese writer Sinai C. Hamada reflect the historical and cultural aspects of Igorot resistance in the Cordillera against Spanish and American colonial rule. Using the biographical approach and James C. Scott's notion of “hidden transcripts" or “infrapolitics,"structures of domination can be gleaned from these stories. More importantly, the creation and defense of a social space in which offstage dissent to the official transcript of power relations (J. C. Scott xi) are manifested in Hamada's short fiction. In the end, turning to the literatures of people from the peripheries may serve as testimonies of colonial domination and “guerilla-style campaigns of attrition" waged by the marginalized.

Tolerance of adzuki bean to preplant-incorporated, pre-emergence, and post-emergence herbicides in Ontario, Canada

Weed management options for adzuki-bean growers in Ontario, Canada are limited due to few herbicide registrations. Four field trials were conducted at three locations in south-western Ontario in 2007 and 2008 to determine the tolerance of adzuki bean to several preplant-incorporated (PPI), pre-emergence (PRE), and post-emergence (POST) herbicides. All the herbicides were applied at the doses registered for use in soybean. The application of pendimethalin, cloransulam-methyl, and halosulfuron-methyl (PPI), flumetsulam, cloransulam-methyl, and halosulfuron-methyl (PRE), and acifluorfen and fomesafen (POST)caused ${\leq}15%$ crop injury; however, the injury was transient and did not reduce the adzuki bean yield. The POST application of cloransulam-methyl and imazethapyr caused ${\leq}23%$ crop injury and reduced the biomass by ${\leq}50%$, but did not reduce the plant height or crop yield. Metribuzin, flumetsulam, atrazine, and pyroxasulfone (PPI), metribuzin, linuron, pyroxasulfone, and atrazine (PRE), and bentazon, imazethapyr plus bentazon, halosulfuron-methyl, and thifensulfuron-methyl (POST) caused ${\leq}61%$ crop injury. These treatments reduced the biomass, plant height, and crop yield. Based on these results, pendimethalin, cloransulam-methyl, and halosulfuron-methyl applied PPI, flumetsulam, cloransulam-methyl, and halosulfuron-methyl applied PRE, and acifluorfen and fomesafen applied POST might be potential weed management options for weed management in adzuki bean. Cloransulam-methyl and imazethapyr applied POST will need further evaluation due to phytotoxicity concerns. Metribuzin, flumetsulam, atrazine, and pyroxasulfone applied PPI, metribuzin, linuron, atrazine, and pyroxasulfone applied PRE, and bentazon, imazethapyr plus bentazon, halosulfuron-methyl, and thifensulfuron-methyl applied POST did not have an adequate margin of safety.

The possibilities for HPLC analysis of lipids have been revolutionized by the availability of evaporative light-scattering detectors, with which the response is independent of the nature of the mobile phase and does not depend on the presence of specific chromophores in the lipids. It was thus possible to develop an HPLC procedure, involving ternary gradient elution, for separating all the lipid classes in animal tissues in a single step. Although reversed phase HPLC has been widely used for the analysis of molecular species of lipids, silver ion chromatography can be a valuable alternative. For example, a stable silver ion column for HPLC was developed which permitted resolution of molecular species of triacylglycerols, even from such complex samples as fish oils, again with light-scattering detection and gradient elution. The capacity for HPLC resolution of diastereomeric diacyl-sn-glycerol derivatives, prepared from triacylglycerols, has lead to a new simple method for stereospecific analysis of the latter.

Negotiating Ethnicity

For students of literature and criticism, Edward Said asserts that Orientalism provides a unique opportunity to determine and understand the relationship of society, history and the text. Moreover, the cultural role played by the Orient in the context of the West connects Orientalism to ideology, politics and power(Said 24). In the Philippines, the Igorot, or the collective term used to refer to the inhabitants of north Luzon is a highly politicized term. Colonial standards formulated by the Spaniards and inherited by the Americans excluded the Igorot from the cultural, intellectual and spiritual civilizing mission of the West. According to the discourse of domination employed by Western colonizers on their subjects, male power is uncontested. In Said's words, ""the Orient is an exclusively masculine territory""(Said 207). How then is the Igorota represented in colonial discourse? My study explores the dialectics of the text, the author and the complex collective formation against which selected texts of Filipino writer Sinai C. Hamada are set. By way of the intertextual method of analysis, I will lay bare and challenge the representation of the Igorota as exotic, masculine-looking and uncivilized Other by setting Hamada's short fiction against colonial postcards, a travelogue written by an anonymous Western tourist and other forms of popular culture. A post colonial reading of these texts will allow for the involvement of the Igorota in the formation of identity, an opportunity that has long been denied her in the critical arenas of history and culture.
