"If you please, sir...": Forms of Address in Literary Translation

Les formes d`adresse sont les marqueurs de la fonction phatique comme on peut le voir dans le cadre des salutations ou des bavardages. Il convient ainsi de supposer que les orateurs utilisent des styles conventionnels particuliers afin de rendre leur discours plus naturel ou acceptable aupres de leur public. Si ces styles sont specifiques a une culture particuliere, les traducteurs devront decider s`ils vont les ? apprivoiser ? pour les rendre conformes aux normes de la culture d`arrivee ou s`ils vont les reproduire tels qu`ils sont dans le texte de depart avec les traits de ? l`exotisme ?. Apres avoir defini et classe les fomes et les fonctions d`adresse en general, cet article tend a explorer les differences concernant la forme, la frequence et la distribution des comportements d`adresse dans les oeuvres de fiction contemporaines espagnoles, anglaises et allemandes ainsi que dans ses traductions.

Junge Disziplin mit alter Tradition -eine kurze Geschichte der Ubersetzungswissenschaft

Nach einer kurzen Klarung der Begriffe und einem Uberblick uber einige fruhe Re-flektionen zum sogenannten “historischen Dilemma” des Ubersetzers, die noch nicht als “Wissenschaft” in unserem heutigen Sinne betrachtet werden konnen, wird in dem folgenden Beitrag die junge Disziplin der Ubersetzungswissenschaft, deren Entwicklung seit den 1960-er Jahren zu beobachten ist, anhand der wichtigsten Paradigmen dargestellt. Diese Paradigmen folgen nicht chronologisch aufeinander sondern uberlappen sich und stellen oft Gegenbewegungen zu den vorangegangenen dar. Folgende Paradigmen werden behandelt: das aquivalenzbasierte Paradigma (Ubersetzen als Umkodieren), das hermeneutische Paradigma (Ubersetzen als Verstehen), das handlungsorientierte Paradigma (Skopostheorie und Funktionalismus), das psycholinguistische Paradigma (Ubersetzen als mentaler Prozess), die Descriptive Translation Studies (Ubersetzung als Schaffung zielkultureller Fakten), Postkolonialismus und Feminismus (Ubersetzen als Kampf um Anerkennung) und die Corpus-based Translation Studies (Ubersetzungen als Datenmengen). Die Darstellung erhebt nicht den Anspruch auf Vollstandigkeit sondern ist als Uberblick gedacht, der zum Weiterdenken und Weiterforschen ermuntern soll.

From the “Protective Workshop” to Professional Reality : Grading the Difficulty of Translation Tasks

A translation task must be geared toward the students’ level of competence. If the task presents too many difficulties, the learners will not be able to show what they have learned already, and the motivation is lost. Drawing on a functional approach to translation, the author argues that in translator training programmes and courses as well as individual classes should be organized according to an appropriate learning progression. The distinction between inter-subjective translation problems and individual translation difficulties can be used as a tool to grade the difficulty of translation tasks and to choose learning and teaching materials in such a way that students are guided from easy to exacting tasks without losing their motivation to prepare for the profession. A few examples from a translation course for beginners are used to show how this can be done.
