Ear Recognition by Major Axis and Complex Vector Manipulation
( Ching-liang Su ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2017 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.11 No.3
In this study, each pixel in an ear is used as a centroid to generate a cake. Subsequently the major axis length of this cake is computed and obtained. This obtained major axis length serves as a feature to recognize an ear. Later, the ear hole is used as a centroid and a 16-circle template is generated to extract the major axis lengths of the ear. The 16-circle template extracted signals are used to recognize an ear. In the next step, a ring-to-line mapping technique is used to map these major axis lengths to several straight-line signals. Next, the complex plane vector computing technique is used to determine the similarity of these major axis lengths, whereby a solution to the image-rotating problem is achieved. The aforementioned extracted signals are also compared to the ones that are extracted from its neighboring pixels, whereby solving the image-shifting problem. The algorithm developed in this study can precisely identify an ear image by solving the image rotation and image shifting problems.

Objectives: The aims of this study were to compare the performance of machine learning methods for the prediction of themedical costs associated with spinal fusion in terms of profit or loss in Taiwan Diagnosis-Related Groups (Tw-DRGs) andto apply these methods to explore the important factors associated with the medical costs of spinal fusion. Methods: A dataset was obtained from a regional hospital in Taoyuan city in Taiwan, which contained data from 2010 to 2013 on patients ofTw-DRG49702 (posterior and other spinal fusion without complications or comorbidities). Naïve-Bayesian, support vectormachines, logistic regression, C4.5 decision tree, and random forest methods were employed for prediction using WEKA3.8.1. Results: Five hundred thirty-two cases were categorized as belonging to the Tw-DRG49702 group. The mean medicalcost was US $4,549.7, and the mean age of the patients was 62.4 years. The mean length of stay was 9.3 days. The lengthof stay was an important variable in terms of determining medical costs for patients undergoing spinal fusion. The randomforest method had the best predictive performance in comparison to the other methods, achieving an accuracy of 84.30%,a sensitivity of 71.4%, a specificity of 92.2%, and an AUC of 0.904. Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that the randomforest model can be employed to predict the medical costs of Tw-DRG49702, and could inform hospital strategy in terms ofincreasing the financial management efficiency of this operation.

Most of the gas exchange in the human body is carried out by the lungs, and the physiological activities of the lungs are uninterrupted. Due to the deterioration of the external environment, pulmonary cell lesions are common clinical lung diseases. Mechanical cyclic stretching is one kind of bionic technology to observe lung cancer cells. The A549 cell line is the human lung adenocarcinoma cell line derived from a primary lung tumor. This study investigated the effects of mechanical cyclic stretching on A549 cell activity and gene expression profile. Whereas mechanical cyclic stretching had no significant difference in colony formation and cell migration of A549 cells, the cell invasion increased significantly in A549 cells after stretching. In addition, the microarray data showed that mechanical cyclic stretching altered gene expression, induced inflammation of cells, and activation of Wnt/β- catenin and tumor necrosis factor pathways. More importantly, mechanical cyclic stretching activated the expression of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) protein. Therefore, the increase of cell invasion induced by mechanical cyclic stretching might be associated with the activation of TNF-α in human lung adenocarcinoma cells.

The effect of Leucaena leucocephala hybrid-Bahru (LLB),which contains a high concentration of condensed tannins,on cellulolytic rumen fungal population in goats was investigated using real-time PCR. The fungal population in goats fed LLB was inhibited during the first 10 days of feeding, but after 15 days of feeding, there was a tremendous increase of fungal population (157.0 μg/ml), which was about fourfold more than that in control goats (39.7 μg/ml). However, after this period, the fungal population decreased continuously, and at 30 days of feeding, the fungal population (50.6 μg/ml) was not significantly different from that in control goats (55.4 μg/ml).

We optimized the weld bead geometry of 6061 aluminum alloy welds pre-coated with activating flux before gas metal arc (GMA)welding. In this activated GMA welding process, there were five single component fluxes used in the initial experiment to evaluate thepenetration capability of bead-on-plate GMA welds. Based on the higher penetration of weld bead, two single component fluxes wereselected to create mixed component flux in next stage. The grey-based Taguchi method was employed to obtain the optimal weldingparameters that were considered with multiple quality characteristics such as penetration, depth-to-width ratio (DWR) and fusion area ofGMA welds. The experimental procedure of the proposed approach not only increases penetration of 6061 aluminum alloy welds, butalso improves the DWR and fusion area of GMA butt-joint welds simultaneously.
