Alum sludge produced by drinking water plants needs to be conditioned and dewatered before final disposal. In this study, a novel ferrous iron/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation process was employed to enhance alum sludge dewaterability. The effect of oxidative sulfate radicals generated by Fe2+ activated HSO5 on alum sludge was studied. The results showed that the optimal conditioning conditions for addition of Fe2+ and PMS were 0.5 g/g and 0.1 g/g TSS, respectively. Meanwhile, the capillary suction time (CST) and specific resistance to filtration (SRF) of alum sludge was reduced by 66% and 88%. Also found was that the absolute value of the zeta potential increased and the particle size decreased in alum sludge after Fe2+-PMS conditioning, which indicated that oxidative sulfate radicals destroyed the floc structure of alum sludge and smaller particles were generated. At the same time, the water contained in sludge flocs was released and enhanced sludge dewaterability, while leaching of aluminum ions also characterized decomposition of alum sludge.

A Gram-positive, spore-forming and moderately halophilic bacterium, strain BH139^(T), was isolated from saline sediment of Xinjiand Province, China. Cells of strain BH139^(T) were motile, flagellated rods. The organism grew optimally at 30-35℃ in the presence 12-14% (w/v) NaCl. The major fatty acids were branched saturated fatty acids such as iso-C_(16:0), anteiso-C_(15:0), iso-C_(15:0), iso-C_(14:0) and anteiso-C_(17:0). The G+C content of the genomic DNA was about 43 mol% and the predominant isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses showed that strain BH139^(T) was most closely related to Lentibacillus salicampi KCCM 41560^(T) (96·9% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and formed a distinct phyletic line from that species. On the basis of physiological and molecular properties, the isolate represents a novel species within the genus Lentibacillus, for which the name Lentibacillus salarius sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BH139^(T) (=KCTC 3911^(T)=DSM 16459^(T)).

A spore-forming, halophilic bacterium, designated strain BH163^(T), was isolated from a salt lake in China. Cells were motile, strictly aerobic rods that contained type A1γ peptidoglycan with meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. The isolate showed Gram- and catalase-positive reactions and formed a terminal endospore with a swollen sporangium. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C_(15:0), iso-C_(15:0), anteiso-C_(17:0) and iso-C_(16:0). The genomic DNA G+C content of the strain was 41·0 mol%. Comparative analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BH163^(T) formed a distinct line within the phyletic group classically defined as the genus Bacillus and was most closely related to the taxa [Bacillus] haloalkaliphilus DSM 5271^(T) and Filobacillus milosensis DSM 13259^(T), with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of 95·9 and 94·5%, respectively. On the basis of physiological and molecular properties, it is proposed that [Bacillus] haloalkaliphilus DSM 5271^(T) is reclassified in the new genus Alkalibacillus as Alkalibacillus haloalkaliphilus gen. nov., comb. nov. Strain BH163^(T) (=KCTC 3916^(T)=DSM 16460^(T)) was assigned as the type strain of the novel species Alkalibacillus salilacus.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder. Emerging evidence implicates β-amyloid (Aβ) plays a critical role in the progression of AD. In this study, we investigated the protective effect of cerebrosides obtained from sea cucumber against senescence-accelerated mouse prone 8 (SAMP8) mice in vivo. We also studied the effect of cerebrosides on Aβ-induced cytotoxicity on the rat pheochromocytoma cell (PC12) and the underlying molecular mechanisms. Cerebrosides ameliorated learning and memory deficits and the Aβ accumulation in demented mice, decreased the content of malondialdehyde (MDA), 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-oxo-G), and nitric oxide (NO), and enhanced the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity significantly. The neuroprotective effect of sea cucumber cerebrosides (SCC) was also verified in vitro: the cerebrosides increased the survival rate of PC12 cells, recovered the cellular morphology, downregulated the protein levels of Caspase-9, cleaved Caspase-3, total Caspase-3, and Bax, and upregulated the protein level of Bcl-2, revealing that cerebrosides could inhibit Aβ-induced cell apoptosis. The results showed the protective effect of SCC was regulated by the mitochondria-dependent apoptotic pathway. Our results provide a new approach to developing the marine organisms as functional foods for neuroprotection.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of diamines with ether group or/and trifluoromethyl (-CF3) group on the optical properties of polyimides. A series of poly(ether imide)s (PEIs) (III) were prepared from 2,2-bis[4-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy) phenyl]propane dianhydride (BPADA) with various aromatic diamines (Ia-h) including non-fluorinated diamines (Ia-d) and the corresponding trifluoromethyl-substituted diamines (Ie-h). The fluorinated PEIs IIIe-h based on fluorinated diamines were nearly colorless with cutoff absorption wavelength (λ0) below 370 nm and with solubility higher than that of the corresponding CF3-free analogues (IIIa-d). Meanwhile, they had lower dielectric constants in the range of 2.91-3.21 at 1 MHz coupled with water absorptions below 0.70% and contact angles against water beyond 108o. The III series had tensile strength of 84.3-94.4 MPa, modulus of elasticity of 3.6-8.9 GPa and elongation at break of 9.4-25.3%, together with temperatures of 5% weight loss (T5%) beyond 510 °C. Compared to the IV series based on 4,4’-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA), the corresponding III series exhibited better thermal and mechanical properties coupled with good optical properties, especially the fluorinated PEIs IIIe-h.

An aerobic, spore-forming, moderately halophilic bacterium, strain BH260^(T), was isolated from a salt lake in China. Cells of this strain were found to be motile rods with flagella. The organism grew optimally at 30-32℃ and pH 8·0 in the presence of 12-15% (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the isolate formed a clade with the type strains of the genus Lentibacillus. The levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity for strain BH260^(T) with respect to Lentibacillus salsus KCTC 3911^(T), Lentibacillus juripiscarius JCM 12147^(T) and Lentibacillus salicampi KCCM 41560^(T) were 96·0, 95·5 and 95·3%, respectively. Chemotaxonomic data (a DNA G+C content of 44 mol%; MK-7 as the major isoprenoid quinone; A1γ-meso-diaminopimelic acid as the cell-wall type; phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol as the major polar lipids; anteiso-C_(15:0), anteiso-C_(17:0) and iso-C_(16:0) as the major fatty acids) also supported assignment of the isolate to the genus Lentibacillus. On the basis of physiological and molecular properties, the isolate represents a novel species within the genus Lentibacillus, for which the name Lentibacillus lacisalsi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BH260^(T) (=KCTC 3915^(T)=DSM 16462^(T)).
Transparent Fluorinated Poly(imide siloxane) Copolymers with Good Adhesivity
Linshuang Li,Yong Xu,Jianfei Che,Xu Su,Chaoran Song,Xiuping Ma 한국고분자학회 2017 Macromolecular Research Vol.25 No.11
A series of fluorinated poly(imide siloxane) (PIS) copolymers were prepared with fluorine dianhydride 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) and two kinds of functional diamine, 2,2'-bis(trifluoromethyl)-[ 1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diamine (TFMB) and 1,3-bis(3-aminopropyl) tetramethyldisiloxane (GAPD) via a conventional two-stage process with thermal imidization. The soft and hard segments in the copolymer chain were composed of 6FDA-GAPD and 6FDA-TFMB, respectively. The structure of the resulting copolymers was determined by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy. Optical, adhesion, mechanical, and thermal properties of these PIS copolymers have been evaluated with respect to real siloxane loading kept to 0, 1.4, 2.6, 4.1, and 5.5wt% in the copolymers, which is lower than the theoretical content of siloxane loading due to a disproportionation reaction of the siloxane chain. The resulting PIS copolymers showed excellent optical transparency in the UV-visible range and good adhesion property. The cutoff absorption wavelength (λ0) of the resulting PIS copolymers films was less than 345 nm and the maximum transmittance (λmax) was up to 91%. The introduction of siloxane segment dramatically improved the adhesion property of PIS copolymers from 1.29 to 2.26MPa (measured by means of shear strength) compared to the fluorinated homopolyimide (6FDA-TFMB) synthesized without siloxane moiety. The thermal and mechanical properties of the resulting PIS copolymers decreased slightly with the increase in siloxane loading but still remain a good level. Due to the addition of trifluoromethyl (-CF3) group and siloxane moiety, the solubility of PIS films was greatly enhanced and they were able to be dissolved in polar aprotic solvents, such as DMAC, DMF, and NMP. The contact angle, surface energy and water absorption were also studied in order to discuss their hydrophobic property.
Acupuncture for Osteoporosis: a Review of Its Clinical and Preclinical Studies
Tian Yimiao,Wang Lili,Xu Tianshu,Li Rui,Zhu Ruyuan,Chen Beibei,Zhang Hao,Xia Bingke,Che Yiwen,Zhao Dandan,Zhang Dongwei 사단법인약침학회 2022 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.15 No.5
Acupuncture has gained growing attention in the management of osteoporosis (OP). However, a comprehensive review has not yet been conducted on the efficacy and challenges of acupuncture in preliminary research and clinical trials. Therefore, an extensive literature search was conducted using electronic databases, including PubMed (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed), CNKI (www.cnki.net), and Web of Science, for studies published from the beginning of 2000 to the end of May 2022. Combinations of synonyms for OP, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, clinical trial, preclinical study, and animal experiments were searched. A total of 290 papers were consulted, including 115 reviews, 109 clinical observations, and 66 preclinical studies. There is accumulating evidence to support the beneficial role of acupuncture in preserving bone quality and relieving clinical symptoms based on clinical and preclinical investigations. The top ten most commonly used acupoints are BL23, ST36, BL20, BL11, CV4, GV4, SP 6, KI3, BL18, and GB39. The underlying mechanisms behind the benefits of acupuncture may be linked with the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (adrenal) axis and activation of the Wnt/β-catenin and OPG/RANKL/RANK signaling pathways. In summary, strong evidence may still come from prospective and well-designed clinical trials to shed light on the potential role of acupuncture in preserving bone loss. Future investigations are needed to explore the potential underlying mechanisms, long-term clinical efficacy, and compliance of acupuncture in OP management.
