A copper-nickel alloy (70:30 ratio) was electrochemically deposited and compared to a composite coating incorporating layered silicate platelets to obtain copper-nickel-montmorillonite (MMT). The composite coatings were electrochemically deposited from a citrate bath to investigate the effects of MMT on the corrosion and mechanical properties of the coatings. Incorporation of MMT into the CueNi alloy films was not affected by the deposition parameters such as applied voltage and pH. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic absorption spectroscopy confirmed the successful incorporation of the MMT into the coatings. Longer term stability in the presence of corroding solutions was noted for the copper-nickel composite films. The Tafel calculations showed an increase in polarization resistance, Rp, from 190.7 kU$cm2 for pure CueNi to 314.3 kU$cm2 for CueNi-0.2% MMT after soaking the coatings in 3.5% NaCl at 25 C for two weeks, which was consistent with the resistance increase measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Microhardness test results showed about a 25% increase in the hardness for the copper-nickel coatings incorporated with the layered silicate platelets versus the pure CueNi coating.
Early Summer Dissolved Oxygen Characteristics in Restored Streams in Seoul
Casey Thoenen,Woonsup Choi(최운섭),Jinmu Choi(최진무) 대한지리학회 2013 대한지리학회지 Vol.48 No.3
This paper presents an evaluation of stream restoration projects in Seoul with a focus on dissolved oxygen. Five test sites across four streams were measured for dissolved oxygen (DO) in late May to early June in 2012 and compared against a set of minimum and maximum thresholds. Only one test site, Hwarang-cheon, showed measurements below 6 ㎎/l DO. Towards the upper limit, the Hwarangcheon site was the only tested stream which was not at risk of DO supersaturation. The Danghyeon-cheon site had the highest probability of supersaturation, with DO saturation exceeding 130% expected 86.5% of the time. When measured every hour during daytime, DO levels showed diurnal variations, peaking in the afternoon. However, they showed inconsistent results along transects of the streams. Overall, the streams are rich in DO. To maintain the streams in good standing, nutrient loading should be addressed to prevent potential algal bloom induced hypoxic events down the line.
Advances in the Development and Validation of Test Methods in the United States
Casey, Warren M. Korean Society of ToxicologyKorea Environmental Mu 2016 Toxicological Research Vol.32 No.1
The National Toxicology Program Interagency Center for the Evaluation of Alternative Toxicological Methods (NICEATM) provides validation support for US Federal agencies and the US Tox21 interagency consortium, an interagency collaboration that is using high throughput screening (HTS) and other advanced approaches to better understand and predict chemical hazards to humans and the environment. The use of HTS data from assays relevant to the estrogen receptor signaling data pathway is used as an example of how HTS data can be combined with computational modeling to meet the needs of US agencies. As brief summary of US efforts in the areas of biologics testing, acute toxicity, and skin sensitization will also be provided.
Airship Research and Development in the Areas of Design, Structures, Dynamics and Energy Systems
Casey Stockbridge,Alessandro Ceruti,Pier Marzocca 한국항공우주학회 2012 International Journal of Aeronautical and Space Sc Vol.13 No.2
Recent years have seen an outpour of revived interest in the use of airships for a number of applications.Present day developments in materials, propulsion, solar panels, and energy storage systems and the need for a more eco-oriented approach to flight are increasing the curiosity in airships, as the series of new projects deployed in recent years show; moreover, the exploitation of the always mounting simulation capabilities in CAD/CAE, CFD and FEA provided by modern computers allow an accurate design useful to optimize and reduce the development time of these vehicles. The purpose of this contribution is to examine the different aspects of airship development with a review of current modeling techniques for airship dynamics and aerodynamics along withconceptual design and optimization techniques, structural design and manufacturingtechnologies and, energy system technologies. A brief history of airships is presented followed by an analysis of conventional and unconventional airships including current projects and conceptual designs.
Realizing housing justice through comprehensive housing policy reform
Casey Dawkins 서울시립대학교 도시과학연구원 2021 도시과학국제저널 Vol.25 No.1
A globally connected, locally centred housing justice movement calls for comprehensive reforms of policies that influence the distribution and affordability of housing. To date, this movement has yet to influence U.S. federal housing policy, which has historically prioritized tax expenditures supporting homeownership over affordable rental housing subsidies for low-income households. This paper takes these appeals to housing justice seriously and asks, ‘What would a conception of housing justice offer to housing policy makers seeking to enact comprehensive housing policy reforms designed to shift the balance of federal housing policy priorities away from homeownership towards the satisfaction of low-income households’ basic housing needs?’ I propose a conception of housing justice grounded in the ideal of civic equality, apply civic equality toward the evaluation of current U.S. federal housing policy, and propose a comprehensive national housing policy reform that is consistent with civic equality. The proposed ‘negative housing tax’ extends the idea of a negative income tax to a tax on housing consumption and capital gains from home sales. The revenues generated from the tax provide funds to support a guaranteed monthly housing allowance that would be distributed to those facing the most severe housing needs.
