The LGBT Equality Campaign and Social Cohesion of Philippine Society
CERNA Ma Flora May M 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2015 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 학술대회자료집 Vol.2015 No.1
This paper presents my personal reflections on the tensions faced by LGBT (lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders) equality campaigns in the Philippines. In a society that is divided by various ethno-linguistic groupings and a history that widened the gap between the elite groups and minority groups like indigenous peoples, the LGBT equality campaign must be mindful of its contribution to the improvement of social cohesion. Its aggressive strategy towards general society may backlash on the campaign via the ‘othering effect.’ The campaign must also be mindful of the evolving nature of identities that it should embrace. In dealing with general society, the campaign can move for tolerance and inclusivity that reaches out to other minority identities that seek out the same objectives. The paper argues that, for us to broaden our support base beyond our likeidentities, we should be able to transcend the differentiation of identities, build coalitions with other marginalized identities, and work for greater social cohesion in society.
