In this study, the mechanical properties of boronized 316L austenitic stainless steel have been investigated. Boronizing was carried out in solid medium consisting of Ekabor powder at 900℃ and 1000℃ for 2, 4 and 8 hours, respectively. The properties of sample were analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer, Glow discharge spectrometer, micro-hardness tester and ball-on-disk wear tester. Increasing the boronizing time and temperature, the hardness of boronized samples were shown over Hv 2000 and the thickness of boride layers were also increased linearly. XRD patterns of samples were revealed the presence of borides such as FeB, Fe₂B, CrB, Cr₂B and Ni₃B. Friction coefficient of boronized STS 316L was shown the low value at 900℃ for 8 hours and 1000℃ for 4 hours, respectively.

Martensitic stainless steel STS 431 has been nitrided by active screen ion nitriding under the various temperature and time. The thickness of diffusion layer, case depth, hardness and composition phases were investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), micro-Vickers hardness tester, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and glow discharge spectroscopy (GDS). It was observed that the thickness of diffusion layer depends strongly on the treatment temperature and time. A sample, which was nitrided at 450℃ for 8hours, was a maximum hardness of Hv0.01 1558 and nitride layer of 70 ㎛. As shown in XRD patterns, ε(Fe2-3N) and expanded martensite (αN) phases which was saturated with nitrogen solid solution were in the nitrided layer treated at 450℃ for 2 hours. Composition phases of ε (Fe2-3N) and γ’ (Fe₄N) were observed after active screen nitriding at 450℃ for 8 hours.
