Globalization has made the national borders less significant than in the past. Continuous efforts to enhance diversity education are necessary to prepare for the future. Korea, which has experienced rapid and compressed industrialization, attracts tourists from all over the world and many migrant workers from developing countries. However, it seems that Koreans are not yet prepared to welcome these people due to the low levels of English proficiencyprejudice towards foreigners. Canada is known to have a well-established diversity education system. Korean students who are in need of English education can greatly benefit from Canada’s learning environment. This paper explores issues in Korean and Canadian education in order to explore whether Canada can offer Korean students a suitable venue for study abroad opportunities. Considering Canada’s many advantages, including its multicultural atmosphere, low cost of education, and multilingual educational history, this paper found that Korean students Clearly Canadian: How Canada’s Unique Diversity Education Structure can Represent an Ideal Learning Environment for South Korean Students 81 would greatly benefit from choosing to study abroad in Canada. Canada could also take advantage from accepting Korean students to study overseas by further diversifying their classrooms with Korean students, and boosting its economy through an increase in Korean investment into Canadian education. Therefore, Canada’s efforts to enhance exchange programs are needed. These can be accomplished by lowering costs, improving its transitional programs, and more advertising on Korean websites.

Purpose: This study was conducted to describe the knowledge and attitudes of nursing and non-nursing college students toward HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B. Methods: A descriptive design was used for this study. The subjects were 123 nursing college students and 128 non-nursing college students. Self-administered questionnaires were used for data collection. Descriptive statistics, χ²-test, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient were used for data analysis. Results: Nursing students showed a greater understanding and more favorable attitudes towards HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B than non-nursing college students. Most non-nursing college students learned about HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B from Mass Media. In contrast, many nursing college students learned about HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B from technical books and lecture. Students who learned from technical books and lecture showed a higher score for knowledge and more favorable attitudes regarding HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B. Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrated that educational opportunities in school are crucial to enhancing knowledge and attitudes toward HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B. A structured education program using strategies to improve attitudes is necessary for college students.
The Effects of Content Schema on Korean Middle School EFL Learners’ Reading Comprehension
Bit-Na Kim,Yusun Kang 한국응용언어학회 2017 응용 언어학 Vol.33 No.2
Despite numerous research studies concerning the role of content schema in reading comprehension, little is known about its exact contribution to different sub-types of reading comprehension: inferential and factual comprehension, and main idea and details comprehension. Moreover, the potential effects of general language proficiency and language learning backgrounds have been largely overlooked in the existing studies. Thus, this study investigated the effects of schema on these four different sub-types of reading comprehension abilities of Korean EFL learners, while controlling for the effects of English language proficiency, measured by vocabulary knowledge, and oversea experiences. One hundred seventy Korean middle school EFL students participated and were tested on specific content prior knowledge, and their performance on reading comprehension abilities that were sub-divided into inferential, factual, main idea, and detail comprehension was analyzed. The analyses not only revealed strong correlation among the examined variables, but also demonstrated that schema plays a significant predictive role in explaining reading comprehension, especially that in inferential comprehension and details retrieval. These findings have important pedagogical implications for building and activating appropriate content-related background knowledge for middle school EFL students in developing their English reading comprehension abilities.
The Effect of Phosphodiesterase-4-Specific Inhibitor in the Rat Model of Spinal Nerve Ligation

Objective : Peripheral neuropathy is characterized by hyperalgesia, spontaneous burning pain, and allodynia. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of rolipram, a phosphodiesterase-4-specific inhibitor, in a segmental spinal nerve ligation model in rats. Methods : Both the L5 and L6 spinal nerves of the left side of the rats were ligated. Phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitor (rolipram) and saline (vehicle) were administered intraperitoneally. We measured mechanical allodynia using von Frey filaments and a nerve conduction study. Results : The mechanical allodynia, which began to manifest on the first day, peaked within 2 days. Multiple intraperitoneal injections of rolipram ameliorated the mechanical allodynia. Furthermore, an intraperitoneal administration of rolipram improved the development of pain behavior and nerve conduction velocity. Conclusion : This study suggests that the phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitor, rolipram, alleviates mechanical allodynia induced by segmental spinal nerve ligation in rats. This finding may have clinical implications.

<P>Polyetheral additives were found to be efficient promoters to enhance the rate of H2-release from ammonia borane (AB) at various temperatures. In particular, tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (T4EGDE, 29 wt% relative to AB + T4EGDE) exhibited significantly improved activities for AB dehydrogenation, with the material-based hydrogen storage capacity of 10.3 wt% at 125 °C within 40 min. <I>In situ</I> FT-IR spectroscopy indicated the formation of B-(cyclodiborazanyl)amino-borohydride (BCDB), borazine, and μ-aminodiborane as gaseous byproducts. In addition, 11B nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy further revealed that diammoniate of diborane (DADB) was initially formed to give polyaminoborane as liquid and/or solid spent-fuel, consistent with previous reports. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations suggested that hydrogen bonding interactions between AB and a polyetheral promoter initially played an important role in increasing the reactivity of B–H bonds of AB by transferring electron density from oxygen atoms of the promoter into B–H bonds of AB. These partially activated, hydridic B–H bonds were proposed to help promote the formation of diammoniate of diborane (DADB), which is considered as a reactive intermediate, eventually enhancing the rate of H2-release from AB. In addition, our <I>in situ</I> solid state 11B magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR measurements further confirmed that the rate of DADB formation from AB with a small quantity of T4EGDE was found to be much faster than that of pristine AB even at 50 °C. This metal-free method for H2-release from AB with an added, small quantity of polyethers would be helpful to develop feasible hydrogen storage systems for long-term fuel cell applications.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>A metal-free method for H2-release from AB with addition of polyethers would be helpful to develop feasible hydrogen storage systems. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c3cp52591k'> </P>
