The Effect of Social Capital on Subjective Well-being Using a Path Analysis Model of Japanese Older Adults: Focusing on the World Values Survey

Vol.85 No.-

Japan is the global frontrunner in terms of population aging, presenting serious challenges for policymakers, one of which is to ensure higher levels of subjective well-being for older adults. A possible measure to increase subjective well-being is the promotion of social capital. Previous research shows that social capital may affect subjective well-being through mediating socioeconomic factors, such as financial satisfaction, an evaluation of a household’s financial situation. The primary purpose of this study is, therefore, to demonstrate the direct pathways through which social capital (organizational participation, interpersonal trust, social norms) affects the subjective well-being of Japanese older adults; additionally, this study tests the whether financial satisfaction partially mediates this effect. A sample of the study from the 6th Wave of the World Values Survey was analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling and mediation analysis. The main findings of the study were as follows. With regard to the direct effect of social capital on subjective well-being, social capital affected only life-satisfaction. The pathways between participation in voluntary organizations and life-satisfaction, and between trust and life-satisfaction were significant and positive. Financial satisfaction, furthermore, mediated the relationship between social capital and subjective well-being through one pathway, participation in voluntary organizations to life-satisfaction. This suggests that the benefits Japanese older adults receive from social capital are largely instrumental in nature. In addition, financial satisfaction was found to mediate one pathway between social capital and subjective well-being. Future research could use longitudinal data to confirm causality between the variables.

Neighborhood Social Capital, Social Innovation and Neighborhood Satisfaction in South Korea

Vol.30 No.1

This study investigates how individual neighborhood social capital and neighborhood social innovation affect neighborhood satisfaction. We analyze data from the Korea Social Enterprise Promotion Agency’s “Local resource survey to build a social economy and local ecosystem”, collected in 2020, using ordinal logistic regression. The results show that among the social capital variables, sense of community, neighborhood cohesion and social trust positively affect neighborhood satisfaction whereas neighborhood participation has no significant effect. In addition, it was confirmed that the more active the social innovation, the main driving force of the social economy, the higher the neighborhood satisfaction. The results suggest that the reinforcement of neighborhood social capital and social innovation should be pursued from the perspective of a wide range of goals of improving the quality of life of residents. In particular, if social innovation is carried out in a way that connects local needs and social capital, not only will neighborhood satisfaction improve, but a more harmonious community can be formed.

The study explores social enterprises' social goals by analysing their mission so as to better understand their perceptions of social problems. Based on the analysis, the study reconsiders the mission of the current era of the Korean social economy. Accordingly, self-disclosed social enterprise data were collected and analyzed using LDA topic modeling and social network analysis methods. Seven mission topics were extracted, and the network centering on key keywords was derived. The analysis results largely divided the social purposes of social enterprises into three categories: 'social purpose that social enterprises want to achieve', 'activities to achieve the purpose', and 'operation method to achieve the purpose'. The study is meaningful in that it emphasizes the importance of establishing and implementing social goals from the point of view of the social economy as well as realizing the economic value of social enterprises by analyzing their mission.
