        Stewardship Theory and Information on Family Firm Performance in Vietnam

        Purpose: The paper contributes to the existing literature on Vietnamese corporate governance and firm performance with a focus on listed family firms and the use of a more suitable econometric framework to analyze firm performance. The study investigates how family firm performance is affected by corporate governance under the standpoint of stewardship theory in Vietnam. Research design, data and methodology: With the use of different measures for firm performance (Tobin’s Q, ROA, and ROE), regression models were estimated using Generalized Least Square (GLS) method on a panel data of a total of 113 listed companies during the five-year period from 2015 to 2019. Results: We found that family ownership as the main characteristic of the stewardship theory affects family firms positively. In addition, several other characteristics in corporate governance as board composition (board independence, board audits, and board committees), CEO (age and tenure) and firm characteristics (size, age, expansion, and annual sales) showed significant impacts on firm performance. Our findings also suggest that family firm performance can be either positively or negatively affected based on the characteristics of corporate governance. The findings can help companies evaluate the significance of corporate governance through deciding board structure and the selection of CEOs to match family firm characteristics. It also gives insights for investors, rating agencies, and policymakers for relevant purposes.

        Critical Factors Affecting the Innovation Activities of Businesses: Evidence from Binh Dinh Province, Vietnam

        The study investigates the factors influencing the innovation activities in the enterprises in the Binh Dinh Province, Vietnam. By employing the dataset from a survey in 200 typical enterprises in Binh Dinh and using the Exploratory Factor Analysis and regression analysis, we found that there are eight factor groups affecting the innovation activities of enterprises. They include management of innovation promotion; market research capacity; leadership inspiring innovation; culture of innovation; human resources for implementing innovation; network connection; disseminating/sharing knowledge; and impact of producing/serving technology. All these factors strongly affect the innovation activities, which plays an important role in promoting the sustainable development of the Vietnamese enterprises, with the statistical significance level at 1%. Moreover, findings also show that, among these factors, the market research capacity is the strongest determinant of the innovation activity in the enterprise. An increase of 1 point of capacity of market research will increase the innovation activities in the enterprise by 0.114 point. It is followed by the management of promoting innovation, leadership inspiring innovation, and disseminating and sharing knowledge, with 0.104, 0.103 and 0.102 score, respectively. On the other hand, network connection is the weakest factor, with the score of 0.07 point.

        Development of label-free electrochemical lactose biosensor based on graphene/poly(1,5-diaminonaphthalene) film

        In this work, a lactose biosensor was developed by co-immobilizing b-galactosidase (b-Gal) and glucose oxidase (GOx) on microelectrodes pre-modified with Pt/graphene/P(1,5-DAN) for estimation of lactose in dairy products to prevent lactose intolerance. The Pt microelectrode was modified with graphene and 1,5-polydiaminonaphthalene film. Graphene was synthesized by chemical vapor deposition on copper tape and manually transferred to the electrode surface. Polymeric P(1,5-DAN) was grafted on top of the graphene film by electropolymerization. Modified surface of the electrode was characterized by Raman spectra analysis, FE-SEM, AFM and cyclic voltammetry. The results indicated that deposition graphene film on electrode surface induced considerable enhancement in current signal, over 20 times as high as the uncoated electrode surface. The developed sensor was successfully used to determine lactose in model samples with sensitivity, correlation coefficient (R2) and limit of detection (LOD) estimated to be 1.33 mA/(mgml1), 0.995 and 1.3 mg/ml, respectively. The combined graphene and conductive P(1,5-DAN) could serve as a novel sensing platform on electrochemical sensors with superior sensitivity.

        Identification of Trombiculid Chigger Mites Collected on Rodents from Southern Vietnam and Molecular Detection of Rickettsiaceae Pathogen

        Trombiculid “chigger” mites (Acari) are ectoparasites that feed blood on rodents and another animals. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 7 ecosystems of southern Vietnam from 2015 to 2016. Chigger mites were identified with morphological characteristics and assayed by polymerase chain reaction for detection of rickettsiaceae. Overall chigger infestation among rodents was 23.38%. The chigger index among infested rodents was 19.37 and a mean abundance of 4.61. A total of 2,770 chigger mites were identified belonging to 6 species, 3 genera, and 1 family, and pooled into 141 pools (10–20 chiggers per pool). Two pools (1.4%) of the chiggers were positive for Orientia tsutsugamushi. Ricketsia spp. was not detected in any pools of chiggers. Further studies are needed including a larger number and diverse hosts, and environmental factors to assess scrub typhus.

        Effect of Multiple AlN Layers on Quality of GaN Films Grown on Si Substrates

        In this paper, we present the effect of multiple thin high-low-high-temperature AlN (HLHT AlN) nucleation layers on GaN film quality. A 1.9-μm-thick GaN film grown on Si (111) substrate shows that the multiple HLHT AlN nucleation layers have a significant effect on GaN film quality. This process also plays a very important role in the growth of GaN films on Si (111) substrates. A high quality GaN film with a uniformly faceted surface with very low dislocation densities is obtained at the optimized multiple HLHT AlN nucleation layers 50-nm thick at a temperature of 1010-800-1010°C and a growth pressure of 50 Torr.

        Design and Modeling of an Innovative Wave Energy Converter Using Dielectric Electro-active Polymers Generator

        This paper proposes a design and modeling of an innovative wave energy converter using Dielectric electro active polymer (DEAP). Firstly, an accurate model of conventional DEAP generator is investigated and validated under a specific range of ocean waves. Then, a structure design of an antagonistic DEAP generator so-called energy capture unit (ECU), which consists of two DEAPs in antagonistic connection mode to increase harvested energy efficiency, is modeled and validated by experimental data. A new design of WECs is then developed with array of ECUs to increase the output energy. In addition, by using the linear potential wave theory, the hydrodynamic forces are calculated under regular wave conditions. Consequently, a complete analytical model of the proposed WECs using multiple ECUs under hydrodynamic behavior is then obtained to investigate the performance of energy conversion. Finally, based on the developed analytical model, the stretch ratio known as an important factor to efficiency and output power is investigated under the influence of the floating buoy's mass. Then, the resonance behavior of the WECs with a typical wave frequency can be tuned by optimizing the floating's mass to increase the degree of utilization of the device. The simulation results indicate that the efficiency of wave energy converter can be up to 25% thanks to resonance behavior.

        Modeling and Experimental Investigation on Dielectric Electro-Active Polymer Generator

        Dielectric electro-active polymers (DEAP) have been attracted for the energy harvesting application due to its low cost, lightweight and flexible deformation capability. This paper presents a validated model and experimental investigation on energy conversion of a typical DEAP generator. Firstly, a dynamics model based on Mooney-Rivlin proposition is developed to describe the strain - force relationship of DEAP material. Then, the effect of charging voltages and energy conversion are also taken into account. In addition, identification processes are done separately for stretching and relaxing strokes using an adaptive PSO scheme to find best material parameters for the model. This makes the model be available to describe the sinusoidal strain forms in practical conditions. The validated model is then employed in investigating input mechanical energy, return energy and conversion energy for the DEAP generator. Experimental evaluations show that the developed model can describe the behavior of DEAP material accurately. Finally, analyses based on the energy conversion demonstrate the abilities of DEAP material as wave energy converter.

        The Effect of Supply Chain Dynamic Capability on Competitiveness and Business Efficiency of Vietnamese Wood Enterprises*

        Purpose: Developing and nurturing supply chain dynamic capability is one of the leading solutions to create competitive advantages, maintain growth and sustainable development for businesses. The study was conducted to experimentally confirm the impact of supply chain dynamic capability on competitiveness and business efficiency for Vietnamese wood enterprises. Research design, data and methodology: The study surveyed 236 managers of Vietnamese wood manufacturing and distribution enterprises. The authors applied the structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze the relationship between the dynamic capability of the supply chain and the competitiveness, business efficiency of enterprises to achieve those goals. Results: The results show that businesses owning supply chain dynamic capability will have better competitiveness and business efficiency. Especially, in the context of Vietnamese wood sector, the larger the scale of business, the more profound the impact of supply chain dynamic capability on competitiveness and business efficiency. Conclusions: Focusing on developing supply chain dynamics would be a promising solution to improve the competitiveness of Vietnam s wood enterprises in the global market.

      • Impact of International Experience and Innovation Capacity on the Export Performance of Vietnamese Agricultural SMEs

        International experience and innovation capacity are factors often related to the internationalisation process of firms. The main objective of this research is to investigate the impact of international experience and innovation capacity on the export performance of Vietnamese agricultural SMEs to identify which factor is more significant. The Resource-Based View and Dynamic Capabilities approach were used as theoretical frameworks. The data were analyzed through partial least squares structural equation modelling. The results indicate that international experience has a greater impact on export performance than innovation capacity, showing that there is possibility of overemphasizing the role of innovation capacity in the export performance of Vietnamese agricultural SMEs.

        Consumer Behaviour Towards Purchasing Feng Shui Goods: An Empirical Study from Vietnam

        Religions and beliefs can affect the shopping behaviors of its followers and practitioners. However, the knowledge about the factors that motivate, facilitate and even constrain customers’ purchase of spiritual goods, such as feng shui items, is limited. Therefore, in this study, I examined the reasons, facilitators, and constraints of purchasing spiritual goods from the buyers’ perspective. Two research questions directed the examination process, including (1) why users buy spiritual goods? And (2) what factors may facilitate or constrain the purchase and use of spiritual goods? Using Vietnam’s feng shui market as the context, I applied the autoethnographic and ethnographic methods to collect and analyze the data. I found that the two main reasons to purchase the feng shui items were the products’ meaning and beauty. In addition, I observed three groups of factors that could facilitate or constrain the purchase and use of feng shui items, including information about the products and their sellers, disposable income and life stage of the buyers, and price and authenticity of the products. Finally, based on these findings, I discussed the practical implications for managing the spiritual goods market in Vietnam.
