Ce–TiO2 catalysts synthesized through sol–gel method were explored for textile wastewaterphotocatalytic degradation in presence of H2O2. Synthesized materials were characterized by X-raydiffraction, Raman spectroscopy, UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, N2 physisorption at 77 Kand H2-temperature programmed reduction. Suitable amount of cerium (1%) significantly inhibits theelectron–hole pairs recombination and reduces the energy gap values of the materials. 1% Ce–TiO2catalyst demonstrated superior catalytic performances permitting a 40% and 55% of TOC and colorconversions, respectively. The relationship between photocatalytic activity and physicochemicalproperties was discussed. Environmental impact of textile wastewater was evaluated by thebioluminescence test using the LUMIStox.

Little studies on chia sprouts were not deeplyaddress the polyphenols profiles and their functionalproperties during long period of germination. This studyaims to evaluate the impact of germination process on thephenolic profile, antioxidant and antibacterial propertiesand relevant enzymes activities of Egyptian chia seeds. Thetotal phenolic and flavonoid contents of chia sproutsincreased several times during ten days of germination andmaximized on 7-day sprouts (6.4 and 11.5 folds, respectively). In HPLC analysis, seventeen phenolic compoundswere detected on 7-day sprouts compared to fifteen in dryseeds, where two new phenolic compounds (p-coumaricacid and kaempferol) were detected. The concentrations ofall the identified phenolic compounds increased severalfolds (1.8–27) on 7-day sprouts. The total antioxidantactivity increased 10, 17, and 29 folds on 7-day sproutsusing DPPH, ABTS and PMC antioxidant methods, respectively compared to the dry seeds. Both antioxidantand carbohydrate-cleaving enzymes increased in chiasprouts and correlated with their phenolic content andantioxidant activity. The phenolic content of 7-day sproutsshowed a potent antibacterial activity against some humanenteric pathogenic bacteria including Escherichia coliO157-H7, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa andStaphylococcus aureus with lower MIC values compared tothe raw seeds.

Targeting the pathogen viability using drugs is associated with development of drug resistance due to selective pressure. Hence, there is an increased interest in developing agents that target bacterial virulence. In this study, the inhibitory effect of ciclopirox, an antifungal agent with iron chelation potential, on the microbial virulence factors was evaluated in 26 clinical MDR Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates collected from Alexandria Main University Hospital, a tertiary hospital in Egypt. Treatment with 9 μg/ml ciclopirox inhibited the hemolytic activity in 70% isolates, reduced pyocyanin production, decreased protease secretion in 46% isolates, lowered twitching and swarming motility, and decreased biofilm formation by 1.5- to 4.5-fold. The quantitative real-time PCR analysis revealed that treatment with ciclopirox downregulated the expression levels of alkaline protease (aprA) and pyocyanin (phzA1). Ciclopirox is used to treat hematological malignancies and the systemic administration of ciclopirox is reported to have adequate oral absorption with a satisfactory drug safety profile. It is important to calculate the appropriate clinical dose and therapeutic index to reposition ciclopirox from a topical antifungal agent to a promising virulence- modifying agent agent against P. aeruginosa, a problematic Gram-negative pathogen.

Cancer has become a major worldwide problemand drug resistance now is one of the most important problemsin treatment of cancer. Anthraquinone derivativesrepresent one of the most important drugs that can be used intreatment of many types of cancer. In this study two series ofnovel bis-anthraquinone derivatives have been synthesized. Five of these compounds were chosen to be evaluated fortheir antitumor activity against human cancer cell lines bythe National Cancer Institute (NCI, USA). Marked activitywas shown for the tested compounds(2–6). The most activeone was compound 6 with mean value-67.00 against all celllines. Compounds 7 and 8 were found inactive.

The present study is focused on instigation of the nonlinear mechanical behavior of reinforced concrete beams considering different types of FRP bars through nonlinear finite element simulations. To explore the impact of the FRP reinforcement type and geometry on the nonlinear mechanical behavior of reinforced beam, intensive parametric studies are carried out and discussed. Twenty models were carried out based on the finite element software (ABAQUS). The concrete damage plasticity model was considered. Four types of fiber polymer bars, CFRP, GFRP, AFRP and BFRP as longitudinal reinforcement for concrete beam were used. The validation of numerical results was confirmed by experimental as well as numerical results, then the parametric study was conducted to evaluate the effect of change in different parameters, such as bar diameter size, type of FRP bars and shear span length. All results were analyzed and discussed through, load-deflection diagram. The results showed that the use of FRP bars in rebar concrete beam improves the beam stiffness and enhance the ultimate load capacity. The load capacity enhanced in the range of (20.44-244.47%) when using different types of FRP bars. The load-carrying capacity of beams reinforced with CFRP is the highest one, beams reinforced with AFRP is higher than that reinforced with BFRP but beams reinforced with GFRP recorded the lowest load of capacity compered with other beams reinforced with FRP Bars.

New derivatives of 1,3,4-benzotriazepin-5-onewere designed and synthesized as structural analogues tothe antitumor agents devazepide and asperlicin. An efficientand novel approach to the synthesis of 2-amino-1,3,4-benzotriazepin-5-one 2 was developed and its structure wasconfirmed. The newly synthesized derivatives were evaluatedfor their in vitro antitumor activity on 60 differentcell lines. Compounds 8 and 9 displayed the most potentantitumor activity against several cell lines specificallyovarian cancer, renal cancer and prostate cancer, whilecompounds 5, 10 and 12 showed significant activitiesagainst UO-31 renal cancer cell line.

A series of new isatin-thiazoline 3a-h and isatin-benzimidazole 4a-h derivatives were synthesized via condensation of isatin Mannich bases 2a-h with either 2-aminothiazoline or 2-aminobenzimidazole. The structures of the newly synthesized compounds were characterized by spectral data. The anti-breast cancer activity of some of the synthesized compounds was assessed in the MCF-7 human breast cancer cell line. The results showed that compounds 4b, 4d and 4g possess significant antiproliferative activity against MCF-7 cells.

Patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) are vulnerable to developing diabetic retinopathy even under insulin therapy. Thus, this study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of hesperidin and insulin in rats with T1DM compared with insulin alone in improving diabetic retinal changes. Eighty rats were divided into four equal groups: group I, control rats without diabetes; group II, untreated rats with diabetes; group III, rats with diabetes treated daily with subcutaneous (SC) doses of long-acting insulin; and group IV, a rat with diabetes in which hesperidin was orally administered with SC insulin. The animals were assessed histologically, morphometrically, and biochemically. In group II, the thickness of all retinal layers decreased histologically. Ultrastructurally, degenerated retinal neurons and congested blood vessels were observed. Immunostaining detected elevated gene expression of advanced glycation end products. Gene expression of vascular endothelial growth factor, and glial fibrillary acidic protein were elevated. In this study, hesperidin supplementation with insulin significantly improved the retinal histological changes, supported by morphometric findings, compared with insulin alone. Moreover, treatment with hesperidin significantly reduced malondialdehyde and elevated serum antioxidant markers, including superoxide dismutase and catalase; furthermore, glutathione peroxidase decreased. Hesperidin might be an effective supplement for improving diabetic retinal complications occurring even with insulin treatment.
