      • Predictors of Knowledge Level and Awareness towards Breast Cancer among Turkish Females

        Aydogan, Umit,Doganer, Yusuf C.,Kilbas, Zafer,Rohrer, James E.,Sari, Oktay,Usterme, Necibe,Yuksel, Servet,Akbulut, Halil,Balkan, Salih M.,Saglam, Kenan,Tufan, Turgut Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.1

Background: Breast cancer (BC) is the most-common malignancy of women worldwide. Though there are differences among developed and developing countries, BC remains the most common cancer type of women in Turkey. Objective: This study aimed to identify the level of knowledge, awareness, and their potential predictors towards BC in Ankara, Turkey. Materials and Methods: The present descriptive study was conducted on 376 females attending a breast health outpatient clinic. A self-administered questionnaire was designed to evaluate knowledge level about BC and predictors effecting its level. Data analysis was performed using the chi-square test. A value of p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Mean age of the participants was $46.2{\pm}9.93$ (22-75). The majority (92.6 %) were married; 41.5% were educated less than nine years. Most of the women were housewives (82.7%) and, were living in an urban region (86.4%). Predictors of effecting responses to seven knowledge and awareness questions about BC varied from demographic features including older age groups, higher educational levels, being married, living in an urban area, being employee, smoking, having greater BMI to additional attributes associated breast health such as the increased number of births, applying for the purpose of control, positive family history of breast diseases, any diagnoses of breast diseases and performing BSE practice. Conclusions: It was determined that females in Turkey have better knowledge of BC than other developing countries even though it is not at the desired level. These findings revealed that females should be more informed about BC risk factors, prognosis and treatments by primary health-care providers to counteract the ascending burden of this disease.

The effect of acrylamide incorporation on the thermal and physical properties of denture resins

Elif Aydogan Ayaz,Rukiye Durkan,Bora Bagi 대한치과보철학회 2013 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.5 No.2

PURPOSE Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is the most commonly used denture base material despite typically low in strength. The purpose of this study was to improve the physical properties of the PMMA based denture base resins (QC-20, Dentsply Ltd., Addlestone, UK; Stellon, AD International Ltd, Dentsply, Switzerland; Acron MC; GC Lab Technologies Inc., Alsip, Japan) by copolymerization mechanism. MATERIALS AND METHODS Control group specimens were prepared according to the manufacturer recommendations. In the copolymer groups; resins were prepared with 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% acrylamide (AAm) (Merck, Hohenbrunn, Germany) content according to the moleculer weight ratio, respectively. Chemical structure was characterized by a Bruker Vertex-70 Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) (Bruker Optics Inc., Ettlingen, Germany). Hardness was determined using an universal hardness tester (Struers Duramin, Struers A/S, Ballerup, Denmark) equipped with a Vickers diamond penetrator. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of control and copolymers were evaluated by Perkin Elmer Diamond DSC (Perkin Elmer, Massachusetts,USA). Statistical analyses were carried out using the statistical package SPSS for Windows, version 15.0 (SPSS, Chicago, IL, USA). The results were tested regarding the normality of distribution with the Shapiro Wilk test. Data were analyzed using ANOVA with post-hoc Tukey test (P<.01). RESULTS The copolymer synthesis was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. Glass transition temperature of the copolymer groups were higher than the control groups of the resins. The 10%, 15% and 20% copolymer groups of Stellon presented significantly higher than the control group in terms of hardness. 15% and 20% copolymer groups of Acron MC showed significantly higher hardness values when compared to the control group of the resin. Acrylamide addition did not affect the hardness of the QC-20 resin significantly. CONCLUSION Within the limitation of this study, it can be concluded that copolymerization of PMMA with AAm increased the hardness value and glass transition temperature of PMMA denture base resins.

Intraparenchymal Methylene Blue Injection for Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy in Breast Cancer Patients does not Interfere with the Pulse Oximetry Readings

        Fatih Aydogan,Ziya Salihoglu,Cihan Uras,Ilhan Karabicak,Varol Celik,Ali Cercel,Semih Baghaki,Ufuk Topuz,Deniz Atasoy,Rovnat Babazade,Hilal Unal 한국유방암학회 2009 Journal of breast cancer Vol.12 No.1

Purpose: Alteration in oxygen saturation is a side effect of the dye used in sentinel lymph node biopsy. The object of this study was to determine the possible effects of methylene blue on the oxygen saturation in patients undergoing sentinel lymph node biopsy. Methods: The complete peroperative records of 148 patients who underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy with intraparenchymal injection of methylene blue were reviewed. The data reviewed included the preinjection pulse oximeter saturation readings and the postinjection values until the readings returned to the preoperative levels in the postanesthesia care unit. Results: The pulse oximetry values were recorded preoperatively, after intubation and, at 15, 30, 45, and 60 minutes of the operation. The results showed that methylene blue did not cause any significant changes in oxygen saturation levels. Conclusion: We suggest that methylene blue might be preferable for the patients with concomitant disease, and for whom close monitoring of their oxygen saturation is required.

Changes in Morphological and Physiological Traits and Stress-Related Enzyme Activities of Green Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Genotypes in Response to Waterlogging Stress and Recovery Treatment

Cigdem Aydogan,Ece Turhan 한국원예학회 2015 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.56 No.3

The morphological and physiological parameters were measured for 15 green bean genotypes, and enzymatic activities were measured for two genotypes (tolerant and sensitive) grown under controlled greenhouse conditions during waterlogging stress and recovery periods. Plants were exposed to waterlogging stress for 7 days followed by 7 days of recovery. The leaf area and color, leaf relative water content and turgid losses, and the degree of cell membrane injury were determined. ‘Şeker Fasulye’ genotype was relatively tolerant among the genotypes studied. Besides, waterlogging treatment caused the loss of sampled organs in the sensitive genotypes, ‘40 Günlük’, ‘L3’, and ‘L4’. After these three genotypes, the ‘L1’ genotype was found to be sensitive. Therefore, enzymatic activities were measured for ‘Şeker Fasulye’ and ‘L1’. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase [NAD(P)H oxidase, EC.1.6.3.1] activity increased during waterlogging treatment and decreased during the recovery period. To the contrary, waterlogging treatment degraded catalase (CAT, EC.1.11.1.6) and glutathione reductase (GR, EC.1.6.4.2) activities in leaves and roots. The activity of both enzymes increased during recovery treatment. In conclusion, leaf area, cell membrane injury, and stress-related enzyme activities were found to be an effective means for determining a green bean genotype’s response to waterlogging stress.

        Serkan Mutlu,Adem Parlak,Umit Aydogan,Aydogan Aydogdu,Bugra Soykut,Cemal Akay,Kenan Saglam,Abdullah Taslipinar 대한약학회 2021 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.44 No.8

The purpose of this present study is to investigatethe levels of oxidative stress parameters in patientswith subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) and the effects oflevothyroxine (LT4) replacement therapy on these parametersand lipid profile. At the beginning of the study bloodsamples were collected from the patients in order to analyseoxidative stress parameters, lipid profile and biochemicalmarkers. After replacement therapy with LT4, inthe third month, same tests were performed again. At thebaseline superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels were found tobe higher in SH patients, compared to the euthyroid group. After LT4 therapy, statistically significant decreases inSOD and catalase levels and increase in HDL-C levelswere noticed. LT4 treatment was found to have positiveeffects on oxidative stress indicators and HDL-C levels.
