      • Asserting Women’s Rights and Well Being in the Age of Populism and Misogyny in the Philippines

Aurora de Dios(오로라 디오스) 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2018 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 학술대회자료집 Vol.2018 No.1

Filipino women take pride in having gained substantial progress in advancing women’s rights and gender equality in the country particularly in the area of legislative reforms. However, such reforms, when viewed in the context of an increasingly globalized world, and the state’s adherence to neo-liberal policies have in fact been quite limited. In addition, the politics of patronage and oligarchic rule and the monopoly of economic and political power by a few have persisted despite the democratization efforts after EDSA revolution and the presence of strong social movements in the country. The lecture briefly examines the effects of globalization processes alongside the deterioration of democratic processes since EDSA on women’s assertions of their rights, voice and well-being. The recent emergence of authoritarian populist/misogynist regime of Duterte illustrates the fragility of hard won gains by women and of social movements in general. The present climate of impunity and the regression of many rights and freedoms and constriction of democratic spaces for citizens in general and women in particular poses serious challenges but also opportunities for women’s struggle to achieve genuine political and economic empowerment. Concrete examples of women’s organizing and collective action will be discussed.
