        Comparative Study on the Users' Awareness and Choice Patterns on the Healthcare Environment Color Index, Focused on Koreans and Romanians

        In contemporary times, there is an increasing demand for a dedicated healthcare environment, all over the world. The main motivation for this demand is the level of awareness manifested by the users and reflected on their expectations. Therefore new research strategies and design actions are investigated in order to answer to the users' needs and to provide objective design tools for the specialist. This study continues a series of previous developments of the Healthcare Environment Color Index that should be used for public facilities in Korea and abroad. The cross-cultural approach is a new opportunity for exchanging know-how and for testing and calibrating the perception of the users on the color index. The gathering of results was made based on the online survey provided in this phase in English version for the Romanian users. The survey was intended as an objective mean of research and an efficient way of disseminating information on the subject thus contributing to increasing the level of awareness of the users. A total of 86 Romanian and 89 Koreans with valid answers took part in the survey. Comparative visualizations of the results showed significant similarities concerning the patterns of color preferences but also cultural and emotional differences. As a result both categories of users proved to be aware of the relation between healthcare environment color and its effects on health. They also showed a common understanding on the potential of the color index. As a result the most appealing colors to be applied to the healthcare environment were the series G and B, and the most effective ones were proved to be the ranges of high lightness and low saturation but also the medium high lightness and medium saturation. Both the similarities and the differences of choice between Romanians and Koreans show that cultural and emotional differences of color recognition are important and that should be taken into consideration in design, in order to generate an inclusive and efficient healthcare environment.

        The Kinetography Model - a Mean of Producing Space Scores, Based on Recording Users' Movement in Space

        When one enters a space, perceives the material geometry of that space. Walking inside buildings or across the city is generating a geometry of moving bodies that fills the space. These two geometries coexist: a static geometry of the space and an invisible one of the moving bodies. The space that we actually experience, whether interior or exterior, is a continuous network of voids. Individuals' movement will fill the network of voids that we understand as "the city". Our environment of voids and borders is organized by the means of architecture and urbanism. The geometry generated by motion affects both the limits and the voids, thus space can be defined by the tandem of the moving bodies and their environment. We propose in this study a mean of investigating users' movement and thus understanding the qualities of space while introducing the concept of space scores as analytical maps and design tools.

        Healing Function Evaluation of Color Samples from the Healthcare Environmental Color Index - A Cross-cultural Comparison Study on Korean and Romanian users

        The present study is following a series of research investigations on design resources coming from collected data referring to users' awareness and preferences. The aim of this research is to test the Healthcare Environmental Color Index as a basis for practitioners in the field of healthcare design. An array of color samples selected from previous research, have been presented to the respondents via an online survey, in order to identify the preferences of the two groups on the relation between environmental color and health. As a result of the first experiment and through the comparison of processed data, the maximum percentage of respondents from each group is validating the relation between environmental color and health. For the second experiment we intend to highlight the patterns of color preferences for each group, and thus to test the color samples healing function. The compared data also showed a higher awareness of Koreans than Romanians on the potential of color applied to healing environment. Last but not least in the third experiment we show the top five color samples preferred by each group. It is significant that the comparison of the results validated once more some of our previous findings related to the healthcare environment, such as: the general preference for the green hue (associated to fatigue relax according to color psychology) and the blue hue (sedation release effect) but also the yellow hue - associated to bright energy. Three out of the top five preferred color samples have been identical to both groups while the other two samples have shown characteristic variations. These results show that similarities are strong and can be used in a glocal design strategy as an accessible tool for any practitioner. Based on the Healthcare Environmental Color Index and users' preferences analysis, a new design culture for healthcare can be established and developed.

        Antioxidant and Hepatoprotective Effects of Naringenin and Its β-Cyclodextrin Formulation in Mice Intoxicated with Carbon Tetrachloride: A Comparative Study

        The present study evaluated the antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects of the flavonoid naringenin (NGN) and its b-cyclodextrin formulation at a dose of 50 mg/kg b.w. The assessment was done by the investigation of serumenzymatic and liver antioxidant activity, histopathological and ultrastructural changes in male Swiss mice, which were subjected to acute experimental intoxication with CCl4. Formulated and free flavonoid were orally given to mice for 7 days and then were intraperitoneally injected with 1.0 mL/kg CCl4 on the 8th day. After 24 h of CCl4 administration, an increase in the levels of transaminases aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase activities and malondialdehyde concentration occurred and a significant decrease in superoxide dismutase, catalase glutathione-peroxidase activities, and glutathione levels was detected as well. These were accompanied by extended centrilobular necrosis, steatosis, fibrosis, and an altered ultrastructure of hepatocytes. Pretreatment with formulated or free flavonoid retained the biochemical markers to control values. Histopathological and electron-microscopic examination confirmed the biochemical results. In conclusion, both NGN and NGN/b-cyclodextrin complex showed antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects against injuries induced by CCl4.

        The Recovery of Non-ferrous Metals from Broken Light Bulbs using the Magnetic Liquid Based Separation

        The paper presents results of a study on the selective separation technology of ferrous and non-ferrous metals from broken light bulbs. The proposed method is to use magnetic fluids to obtain a magnetic fluid based- separation. [1] The study was conducted using three types of waste materials: regular light bulbs, auto light bulbs and neon tubes. In order to process the waste materials, a six stages technologic flow was developed: a) separation of light bulbs components; b) Physical and chemical analysis of raw materials; c) grain conditioning of the raw material; d) dry magnetic separation of ferrous components; e) magnetic fluid separation of non-magnetic material; f) recovery of the magnetic fluid adhered to the surface of the separated material grains. [2] This study shows that magnetic fluid separation is only profitable for regular and auto light bulbs and is not profitable in the case of neon tubes.

        Flax Fibres Fabric Surface Decoration with Nanoparticles - a Promising Tool for Developing Hybrid Reinforcing Agent of Thermoplastic Polymers

        In this study, the synthesis and characterization of functionalized flax fabric with adequate titanium and aluminiumprecursors is presented (AlCl3 or Ti(C4H9O)4). The modified flax fabrics were analysed both visually and instrumentally byIR spectroscopy and microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermal analysis (DTA-TG). The data highlightthat the nature and amount of functionalizing agent induce important morphological changes of the surface. These flaxfabrics decorated with alumina or titanium dioxide nanoparticles are desired to be used as reinforcing agents of differentrecycled polyethylene terephthalate. The properties will be designed by the nature, processing route and amount of theprecursors used for the surface modification of these cellulosic fibres/fabrics, the surface decoration increasing their thermalproperties (especially thermal stability) but also surface properties (especially roughness, hydrophilic/hydrophobic ratio,etc.). All these factors will finally induce improved compatibility between phases and thus improved physico-mechanical andthermal properties. Taking into account the large amount of natural cellulosic fibres and recycled thermoplastic polymers,added-value products will be obtained and at the same time some environmental issues are solved. The expected applicationscan include the fabrication of automotive parts, protective panels for highways and railways, etc.
