Various extracts from olive leaves have been precipitated by a supercritical antisolvent (SAS) process to evaluate the possibility of producing polyphenol fine particles with controlled size and size distribution. Olive leaves were initially extracted with subcritical fluids using mixtures of CO2+ethanol at 10% and 50%, by pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) with water, ethanol and a hydroalcoholic mixture (50 : 50) (v/v), and also by conventional ethanol extraction (CE). PLE gave the extract with the highest yield and the best antioxidant activity. SAS precipitation was unsuccessful for the extracts obtained with pressurized water and with the hydroalcoholic mixture (50 : 50) (v/v). The SAS precipitates with the smallest particle sizes were produced from extracts obtained with subcritical fluids. The SAS precipitates obtained after the conventional ethanol extraction of olive leaves showed the best antioxidant activity.

Background Thrombotic events are well documented in primary erythrocytosis, but it is uncertain if secondary etiologies increase the risk of thrombosis. This study aimed to determine the causes of erythrocytosis and to identify its impact as a risk factor for thrombosis. Methods Data were obtained from patients with erythrocytosis between 2000 and 2017 at a referral hospital in Mexico City. Erythrocytosis was defined according to the 2016 WHO classification. Time to thrombosis, major bleeding, or death were compared among groups of patients defined by the etiology of erythrocytosis using a Cox regression model, adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors. Results In total, 330 patients with erythrocytosis were studied. The main etiologies of erythrocytosis were obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in 29%, polycythemia vera (PV) in 18%, and chronic lung disease (CLD) in 9.4% of the patients. The incidence rate of thrombosis was significantly higher in patients with PV and CLD than that in patients with OSA (incidence rates of 4.51 and 6.24 vs. 1.46 cases per 100 person-years, P=0.009), as well as the mortality rate (mortality rates of 2.72 and 2.43 vs. 0.17 cases per 100 person-years, P=0.003). Conclusion The risk of thrombosis in CLD with erythrocytosis was comparable to that in patients with PV. Further larger-scale studies are needed to confirm these findings and evaluate the benefits of preventive management of COPD with erythrocytosis similar to PV
Comparative study of the radiopacity of resin cements used in aesthetic dentistry

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to compare the radiopacity of 6 modern resin cements with that of human enamel and dentine using the Digora digital radiography system, to verify whether they meet the requirements of ANSI/ADA specification no. 27/1993 and the ISO 4049/2000 standard and assess whether their radiopacity is influenced by the thickness of the cement employed. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three 3-thickness samples (0.5, 1 and 1.5 mm) were fabricated for each material. The individual cement samples were radiographed on the CCD sensor next to the aluminium wedge and the tooth samples. Five radiographs were made of each sample and therefore five readings of radiographic density were taken for each thickness of the materials. The radiopacity was measured in pixels using Digora 2.6 software. The calibration curve obtained from the mean values of each step of the wedge made it possible to obtain the equivalent in mm of aluminium for each mm of the luting material. RESULTS With the exception of Variolink Veneer Medium Value 0, all the cements studied were more radiopaque than enamel and dentin (P<.05) and complied with the ISO and ANSI/ADA requirements (P<.001). The radiopacity of all the cements examined depended on their thickness: the thicker the material, the greater its radiopacity. CONCLUSION All materials except Variolink Veneer Medium Value 0 yielded radiopacity values that complied with the recommendations of the ISO and ANSI/ADA. Variolink Veneer Medium Value 0 showed less radiopacity than enamel and dentin.

Four different Trichoderma strains, T. harzianum CECT 2413, T. asperellum T53, T. atroviride T11 and T. longibrachiatum T52, which represent three of the four sections contained in this genus, were transformed by two different techniques: a protocol based on the isolation of protoplasts and a protocol based on Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. Both methods were set up using hygromycin B or phleomycin resistance as the selection markers. Using these techniques, we obtained phenotypically stable transformants of these four different strains. The highest transformation efficiencies were obtained with the T. longibrachiatum T52 strain: 65-70 transformants/μg DNA when transformed with the plasmid pAN7-1 (hygromycin B resistance) and 280 transformants/107 spores when the Agrobacterium-mediated transformation was performed with the plasmid pUR5750 (hygromycin B resistance). Overall, the genetic analysis of the transformants showed that some of the strains integrated and maintained the transforming DNA in their genome throughout the entire transformation and selection process. In other cases, the integrated DNA was lost.
