Biological Characterization of an Edible Species from Brazilian Biodiversity: From Pharmacognostic Data to Ethnopharmacological Investigation

Cleide Adriane Signor Tirloni,Aniely Oliveira Silva,Rhanany Alan Calloi Palozi,Paulo Cesar de Paula Vasconcelos,Roosevelt Isaias Carvalho Souza,Ariany Carvalho dos Santos,Valter Paes de Almeida,Jane M 한국식품영양과학회 2018 Journal of medicinal food Vol.21 No.12

Talisia esculenta (A. St.-Hil.) Radlk. is a large tree belonging to family Sapindaceae and popularly known as “pitombeira” or “pitomba.” Although species have relevant economic and medicinal uses in Brazil, no study has investigated its effectiveness as a diuretic, hypotensive, and antihypertensive agent. The aim of this study was to present a detailed anatomical and histochemical study for T. esculenta and provide important safety and efficacy parameters. After morpho-anatomical and microchemical study, a purified aqueous extract (ethanol soluble fraction obtained from T. esculenta [ESTE]) was obtained, and detailed phytochemical investigation was performed. Subsequently, acute oral toxicity test was performed in male and female rats. Moreover, diuretic, hypotensive, and antihypertensive effects on normotensive and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) were investigated. Finally, the effects of prolonged treatment with ESTE on serum levels of nitrite, thiobarbituric acid reactive species, and nitrotyrosine were also measured in SHR. Oral treatment with ESTE did not induce acute toxic effects and did not affect urine production, blood pressure, or heart rate of normotensive and SHR. Prolonged treatment with ESTE was able to increase serum nitrite levels and significantly reduce oxidative and nitrosative stress markers in SHR. Data obtained showed that ESTE has a significant antioxidant activity without showing any clinical signs of acute toxicity. The use of this species as a diuretic, hypotensive, or antihypertensive agent should be carried out with caution, since administration in rodents did not produce renal and/or hemodynamic responses that justify this indication.

Structural complexity of the craniofacial trabecular bone in multiple myeloma assessed by fractal analysis

        Michels Mariane,Morais-Faria Karina,Rivera César,Brandão Thaís Bianca,Santos-Silva Alan Roger,Oliveira Matheus L 대한영상치의학회 2022 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.52 No.1

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the structural complexity of craniofacial trabecular bone in multiple myeloma by fractal analysis of panoramic and lateral skull radiography, and to compare the fractal dimension values of healthy patients (HPs), pre-treatment patients (PTPs), and patients during bisphosphonate treatment (DTPs). Materials and Methods: Pairs of digital panoramic and lateral skull radiographs of 84 PTPs and 72 DTPs were selected. After application of exclusion criteria, 43 panoramic and 84 lateral skull radiographs of PTPs, 56 panoramic and 72 lateral skull radiographs of DTPs, and 99 panoramic radiographs of age- and sex-matched HPs were selected. The fractal dimension values from panoramic radiographs were compared among HPs, PTPs, and DTPs and between anatomical locations within patient groups using analysis of variance with the Tukey test. Fractal dimension values from lateral skull radiographs were compared between PTPs and DTPs using the Student t-test. Pearson correlation coefficients were used to assess the relationship between the mandible from panoramic radiographs and the skull from lateral skull radiographs. Intra-examiner agreement was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (α = 0.05). Results: The fractal dimension values were not significantly different among HPs, PTPs, and DTPs on panoramic radiographs or between PTPs and DTPs on lateral skull radiographs (P>0.05). The mandibular body presented the highest fractal dimension values (P≤0.05). The fractal dimension values of the mandible and skull in PTPs and DTPs were not correlated. Conclusion: Fractal analysis was not sensitive for distinguishing craniofacial trabecular bone complexity in multiple myeloma patients using panoramic and lateral skull radiography.

Hepatoprotective Effect of Essential Oils from Hyptis crenata in Sepsis-Induced Liver Dysfunction

Glauber Cruz Lima,Yuri de Abreu Gomes Vasconcelos,Marilia Trindade de Santana Souza,Alan Santos Oliveira,Rangel Rodrigues Bomfim,Ricardo Luiz Cavalcanti de Albuquerque Junior,Enilton Aparecido Camargo 한국식품영양과학회 2018 Journal of medicinal food Vol.21 No.7

No specific therapeutics are available for the treatment of sepsis-induced liver dysfunction, a clinical complication strongly associated with the high mortality rate of septic patients. This study investigated the effect of the essential oil of Hyptis crenata (EOHc), a lamiaceae plant used to treat liver disturbances in Brazilian folk medicine, on liver function during early sepsis. Sepsis was induced by the cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) model. Rats were divided into four groups: Sham, Sham+EOHc, CLP, and CLP+EOHc. EOHc (300 mg/kg) was orally administered 12 and 24 h after surgery. The animals were sacrificed for blood collection and liver tissue samples 48 h after surgery. Hepatic function was evaluated by measuring serum bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels. The levels of malondialdehyde and the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and GSH peroxidase (GSH-Px) were measured for assessment of oxidative stress. Liver morphology was analyzed by hematoxylin and eosin staining. EOHc normalized serum ALP, ALT, and bilirubin levels and inhibited morphological changes. In addition, we observed that EOHc inhibited elevation in hepatic lipid peroxidation and reduction of the glutathione peroxidase activity induced by sepsis. Our data show that EOHc plays a protective effect against liver injury induced by sepsis.
