<P>This study deals with ultrasonic wave propagation on a piezoelectric polymer substrate for tactile actuator. On the piezoelectric polymer substrate, a pair of interdigital transductor (IDT) electrodes is patterned by lift-off process and a resonator is made by exciting the IDTs. A standing wave is generated between the pair of IDT electrodes, of which the wavelength matches with the distance between two IDTs. The standing ultrasonic waves can give different textures to the users. The wave propagation in this periodic structure on the polymer substrate is studied by harmonic and transient analysis. Vertical displacement and induced voltage at the output IDT electrode are calculated and the ultrasonic wave generation is experimentally verified. The proposed concept of tactile actuator based on ultrasonic wave is explained.</P>

We evaluated the cardioprotective effect of Aloe vera gel isoprenaline (ISO)-administered myocardial infarction in rats. ISO administration increased lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress in rats, which were ameliorated by A. vera gel supplementation. Our study also revealed that creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) activities were increased in ISO-administered rats, while the activities of cellular antioxidants, such as superoxide dismutase and catalase, and glutathione concentration were decreased. A. vera gel lowered CK-MB enzyme activities and the glutathione concentration in ISO-administered rats, and increased antioxidant activities. Histopathological examination also revealed increases in thickness of the left ventricle myocardium, increases in mononuclear cell infiltrations, increased degeneration of focal areas of the endocardium, and increased fibrous tissue deposition in the heart of ISO-administered rats; whereas, A. vera prevented infiltration of inflammatory cells and reduced left ventricular fibrosis. In conclusion, we show that A. vera supplementation protects against development of cardiac inflammation, fibrosis, and oxidative stress in ISO-administered rats.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are widely used as starter culture in food fermentation due to their harmless entity and health beneficial properties along with the ability to change texture, aroma, flavor and acidity of food products. In this study, five different LAB (FB003, FB058, FB077, FB081, and FB111) isolated from different Korean traditional fermented foods, assigned to Lactobacillus plantarum, Pediococcus pentosaceus, Weissella viridescens, Lactobacillus sakei, and Leuconostoc mesenteroides, respectively, on the basis of their physiological properties and 16S rRNA sequence analysis, to use as fermentation starter and check their ability to fasten the ripening time as well as the overall optimization in the fermentation condition. To check their suitability as starters, their safety, acid and bile tolerance, NaCl and temperature resistance, susceptibility to common antibiotics, and antimicrobial activities were determined. Squid jeotgal samples were prepared by adding 108 CFU/g of each strain in different samples, which were then kept for fermentation at 4 ℃ and checked for their antioxidant activities at 0, 7, 15, and 21-day intervals. The samples fermented with FB003 and FB077 displayed the highest antioxidant activity. This study revealed two effective starter cultures (FB003, FB077) for squid jeotgal fermentation, which presented increased functionalities. The results of this study will lead to the development of novel industrial-scale production avenues for jeotgal preparation, and offer new insights into the prevention and control of chronic diseases.

Fermentation plays a vital role in the nutritional enrichment of food. Korea has a long tradition of adding fermented food to the daily diet and jeotgal is one of the common fermented and salted foods in Korean cuisine. In our study, we added soymilk as an additive to squid jeotgal to improve its functionality. We mixed different concentrations of soymilk (2, 5, and 10 mg/g) with squid jeotgal samples, fermented them for one week, and then tested their antioxidant and anticancer activities to compare with those of squid jeotgal samples without soymilk additive. To investigate the anticancer characteristics, glutathione-S-transferase (GST)-pi enzyme assay was used. To test the antioxidant activities, various assays were performed, including 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl free radical scavenging activity, 2,2-azino-bis(3-ethyl-benzothiazoline- 6-sulfonic acid) diammonium saltradical cation scavenging assay, and reducing power assay. Samples fermented with a small amount of soymilk showed excellent anticancer activity. The addition of only 2 mg/g of soymilk to squid jeotgal inhibited the activity of GST-pi by almost 50% when compared with the sample with no addition. Moreover, no undesirable bitterness or astringency was noticed. Our results could help to improve the current food status of squid jeotgal and it could be used to reduce the risk of chronic disease along with its basic nutritional function.

<P>The present study investigates a film actuator made with dielectric cellulose acetate films separated by narrow spacers as a means of electrostatic actuation for potential haptic application. Fabrication process for the actuator is explained along with experiments conducted over a wide frequency range of actuation frequency. A valid finite element simulation of the actuator is made on the quarter section of the actuator by using full 3D finite elements. Vibration characteristics such as fundamental natural frequency, mode shape and output velocity in the frequency range for haptic feeling generation are obtained from the finite element analysis and compared with the experimental results. Experimental results demonstrate that the finite element model is practical and effective enough in predicting the vibration characteristics of the actuator for haptic application. The film actuator shows many promising properties like high transparency, wide range of actuation frequency and high vibration velocity for instance.</P>
Cellulose nanocrystal/graphene oxide composite film as humidity sensor
Kafy, A.,Akther, A.,Shishir, Md.I.R.,Kim, H.C.,Yun, Y.,Kim, J. Elsevier Sequoia 2016 Sensors and actuators. A Physical Vol.247 No.-
Cellulose nanocrystal/graphene oxide composite was reported as a humidity sensor in this study. The composite film was fabricated using simple blending the materials followed by oven drying. The composite film offers a unique advantages of cellulose combined with functionality of GO. It was capitalized to design renewable, flexible and cheap humidity sensor. Performance of the composite film as a humidity sensor was evaluated on the basis of relative capacitance change at different humidity level. Synthesized composite film was characterized using scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscope, and X-ray diffraction. Environmental effect such as temperature was taken into account on the sensor performance. The sensing mechanism is explained on the basis of presence of hydrophilic functional groups in the composite. The linear and fast response of the developed sensor is advantageous.
