      • Communal Agency and Social Development: Examples from First Grade Classrooms Serving Children of Immigrants

Jennifer Keys Adair,Kiyomi S?nchez-Suzuki Colegrove 환태평양유아교육연구학회 2014 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhoo Vol.8 No.2

This article explores how children of Latino immigrants responded to a learning environment where they could influence how and what they learned. Using ethnographic data from the much larger Agency and Young Children project in the United States, this article describes how a particular six year old classroom serving mostly children of Latino immigrants responded in ways that not only increased content knowledge in subjects such as science and literacy but also increased the amount of shared or communal agency in the classroom, even affecting the development of social capabilities by the children and teacher alike. Using a conceptual framework borrowed from development economics and particularly the work on agency and capabilities by Sen (1999; 2003), this paper counters a strictly psychological, individualistic version of agency and instead conceptualizes agency as a means to building individual and communal capabilities.

      • Cultural Perspective Taking in Cross-Cultural Negotiation

        이수진,Wendi Adair,서성지 한국인사ㆍ조직학회 2011 한국인사ㆍ조직학회 발표논문집 Vol.2011 No.1

This study introduces the construct cultural perspective taking in negotiation, the active consideration of the other party's culturally-normative negotiation behaviors prior to negotiation and compares the effect of cultural perspective taking (CPT) versus perspective taking (PT) in cross-cultural negotiations. 160 undergraduate students of North American and East Asian ethnicity in the United States and Canada participated in a simulated buyer-seller negotiation in a laboratory study. Participants were randomly assigned to CPT or PT condition. Results show that negotiators who engaged in CPT claimed more value than those who engaged in PT. And when both East Asian and North American negotiators engaged in CPT, East Asian negotiators claimed more value. CPT had no effect on value creation. This study highlights that learning about the other culture before a cross-cultural encounter benefits value claiming, but not necessarily value creation.

Managing Psychological Contracts: Employer-Employee Expectations and Non-Athlete Pasifika Professionals in the National Rugby League (NRL)

David Lakisa,Tracy Taylor,Daryl Adair 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2023 Journal of Global Sport Management Vol.8 No.1

In Australia, a substantial proportion of men’s National Rugby League (NRL) players are of Pasifika (Pacific Islander and M"aori) origin; however, this cultural group is a more modest proportion of the NRL’s non-athlete workforce. Using psychological contract (PC), we explored workplace expectations of non-athlete Pasifika employees and their employers in the NRL, either within the league or clubs. In terms of methodology, a ‘talanoa’ approach to interpersonal dialogue provided the framework for culturally rele- vant conversations, stories and ideas exchange with 30 individu- als, including 20 Pasifika NRL employees and 10 non-Pasifika employers. Additionally, 21 sessions of fieldwork, including partici- pant observations at Pasifika rugby league events were also used to collect data. Results indicate Pasifika knowledge and contribu- tion are important in the NRL workplace. It is clear there is a posi- tive shift to a ‘balanced’ psychological contract based on increased visibility and intercultural sharing of experiences and knowledge systems by Pasifika employees. However, non-Pasifika employers are still grappling to understand Pasifika socio-cultural sensibilities and to translate that, as appropriate, into manage- ment approaches. Diversity management is a tentative work in progress, with little knowledge about how management practices might optimize the skills and expectations of Pasifika employees with a view to better understanding and managing PC in profes- sional sport.

Optimized Methods for the Isolation of Arabidopsis Female Central Cells and Their Nuclei

Park, Kyunghyuk,Frost, Jennifer M.,Adair, Adam James,Kim, Dong Min,Yun, Hyein,Brooks, Janie S.,Fischer, Robert L.,Choi, Yeonhee Korean Society for Molecular and Cellular Biology 2016 Molecules and cells Vol.39 No.10

The Arabidopsis female gametophyte contains seven cells with eight haploid nuclei buried within layers of sporophytic tissue. Following double fertilization, the egg and central cells of the gametophyte develop into the embryo and endosperm of the seed, respectively. The epigenetic status of the central cell has long presented an enigma due both to its inaccessibility, and the fascinating epigenome of the endosperm, thought to have been inherited from the central cell following activity of the DEMETER demethylase enzyme, prior to fertilization. Here, we present for the first time, a method to isolate pure populations of Arabidopsis central cell nuclei. Utilizing a protocol designed to isolate leaf mesophyll protoplasts, we systematically optimized each step in order to efficiently separate central cells from the female gametophyte. We use initial manual pistil dissection followed by the derivation of central cell protoplasts, during which process the central cell emerges from the micropylar pole of the embryo sac. Then, we use a modified version of the Isolation of Nuclei TAgged in specific Cell Types (INTACT) protocol to purify central cell nuclei, resulting in a purity of 75-90% and a yield sufficient to undertake downstream molecular analyses. We find that the process is highly dependent on the health of the original plant tissue used, and the efficiency of protoplasting solution infiltration into the gametophyte. By isolating pure central cell populations, we have enabled elucidation of the physiology of this rare cell type, which in the future will provide novel insights into Arabidopsis reproduction.

Effects of spinal manipulation and pain education on pain in patients with chronic low back pain: a protocol of randomized sham-controlled trial

        Clécio Vier,Marcelo Anderson Bracht,Marcos Lisboa Neves,Maíra Junkes-Cunha,Adair Roberto Soares Santos 한국한의학연구원 2018 Integrative Medicine Research Vol.7 No.3

Background: Low back pain (LBP) has more than doubled in the last 20 years, probably influenced by biopsychosocial factors. Noninvasive treatments have been applied in individuals with chronic nonspecific LBP as spinal manipulation and pain education. However, the neurophysiological effects of these treatments are not clear. The aim of this research is to verify the pain control, functional and neurophysiological effects of spinal manipulation, and pain education in individuals with chronic nonspecific LBP. Methods: This research is an assessor and subject blinded, 2-arm, randomized sham-controlled trial and will be conducted at Governador Celso Ramos Hospital, Florianópolis, Brazil. One hundred and twenty-eight individuals with chronic nonspecific LBP will be recruited for this study. Individuals will be randomly allocated into one of the two groups: (1) spinal manipulation plus pain education or (2) sham treatment plus pain education. Each group will be received two sessions per week over six weeks of treatment. The measures will be applied at baseline, six weeks, and three months after randomization. The primary outcome will be a pain intensity at six weeks postrandomization. Secondary outcomes will be pressure pain threshold, disability, fear and avoidance beliefs, kinesiophobia, risk of poor prognosis, quality of life, and inflammatory biomarkers. Discussion: Evidence has shown that psychosocial factors are more involved in chronic pain than we thought a few years ago. Then, studies investigating both functional and neurophysiological effects of these interventions to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment and what else is happening at the cellular level in nervous system are needed.

Synthesis of Ag/SiO2 Nanosize Particles by Reverse Micelle and Sol - Gel Processing

        Bae, Dong Sik,Park, Sang Whan,Han, Kyong Sop,Adair, James H . 대한금속재료학회(대한금속학회) 2001 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.7 No.4

Ag/SiO₂ composite particles have been synthesized within reverse micelle via metal alkoxide hydrolysis and condensation. The size of the particles and the thickness of the coating can be controlled by manipulating the relative rates of the hydrolysis and condensation reactions of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) within the microemulsion. The average size of the synthesized particles was in the size range of 20-40 ㎚. The effects of synthesis parameters, such as the concentration of the Ag solution, the molar ratio of water to TEOS, and the molar ratio of water to surfactant, are discussed.

      • A meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies for adiponectin levels in East Asians identifies a novel locus near <i>WDR11-FGFR2</i>

        Wu, Ying,Gao, He,Li, Huaixing,Tabara, Yasuharu,Nakatochi, Masahiro,Chiu, Yen-Feng,Park, Eun Jung,Wen, Wanqing,Adair, Linda S.,Borja, Judith B.,Cai, Qiuyin,Chang, Yi-Cheng,Chen, Peng,Croteau-Chonka, Da Oxford University Press 2014 Human Molecular Genetics Vol.23 No.4

<P>Blood levels of adiponectin, an adipocyte-secreted protein correlated with metabolic and cardiovascular risks, are highly heritable. Genome-wide association (GWA) studies for adiponectin levels have identified 14 loci harboring variants associated with blood levels of adiponectin. To identify novel adiponectin-associated loci, particularly those of importance in East Asians, we conducted a meta-analysis of GWA studies for adiponectin in 7827 individuals, followed by two stages of replications in 4298 and 5954 additional individuals. We identified a novel adiponectin-associated locus on chromosome 10 near <I>WDR11-FGFR2</I> (<I>P</I> = 3.0 × 10−14) and provided suggestive evidence for a locus on chromosome 12 near <I>OR8S1-LALBA</I> (<I>P</I> = 1.2 × 10−7). Of the adiponectin-associated loci previously described, we confirmed the association at <I>CDH13</I> (<I>P</I> = 6.8 × 10−165), <I>ADIPOQ</I> (<I>P</I> = 1.8 × 10−22), <I>PEPD</I> (<I>P</I> = 3.6 × 10−12), <I>CMIP</I> (<I>P</I> = 2.1 × 10−10), <I>ZNF664</I> (<I>P</I> = 2.3 × 10−7) and <I>GPR109A</I> (<I>P</I> = 7.4 × 10−6). Conditional analysis at <I>ADIPOQ</I> revealed a second signal with suggestive evidence of association only after conditioning on the lead SNP (<I>P</I>initial = 0.020; <I>P</I>conditional = 7.0 × 10−7). We further confirmed the independence of two pairs of closely located loci (<2 Mb) on chromosome 16 at <I>CMIP</I> and <I>CDH13</I>, and on chromosome 12 at <I>GPR109A</I> and <I>ZNF664</I>. In addition, the newly identified signal near <I>WDR11-FGFR2</I> exhibited evidence of association with triglycerides (<I>P</I> = 3.3 × 10−4), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C, <I>P</I> = 4.9 × 10−4) and body mass index (BMI)-adjusted waist–hip ratio (<I>P</I> = 9.8 × 10−3). These findings improve our knowledge of the genetic basis of adiponectin variation, demonstrate the shared allelic architecture for adiponectin with lipids and central obesity and motivate further studies of underlying mechanisms.</P>
